Now, I am sleeping in kickers and a vest under a fan. Let the mosquitos bite me. They can have me ... Can we live here? ... If I don't become roadkill in the next few days, I'll let you know my thoughts.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habab polity was, within living memory, one of a lord (Shumagalle) and serf (Tigre) relationship. In the 1870s/1880s, the Habab were subjected to pressures from the strong characters ruling in the surrounding lands: Ras Alula in the Hamasien, the Mahdist Emir Osman Digna, Colonel Kitchener, Governor of the Anglo-Egyptian enclave of Suakin, and in Massaua the Egyptians and later the Italians. In 1887, the Kantibai of the Habab signed a treaty of Protection with the Italians. In the period from 1887 to 1895, the Habab, in a fraught process, had to come to terms with the European concept of sovereignty. Anthony D'Avray's work is primarily based on documents left by Italian administrators based at Nakfa in Eritrea in the late 19th century. They reported matters of current importance, and also the extensive oral traditions of the Habab and other peoples of the Red Sea coasts. Other primary sources, notably from the Public Record Office in London supplement the Nakfa documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Warhol’s explosive Pop Art and sharp commentary on advertising and celebrity culture are renowned and deeply relevant even decades after their creation. Though Warhol himself could be a polarizing figure both personally and professionally, there is no doubt that he was a pioneer of the Pop movement, and today, as a result, his works regularly fetch astronomical prices. In this evocative addition to Assouline’s Ultimate Collection, Warhol expert and former Andy Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner curates the 100 quintessential, unique works that define the evolution of this illustrious artist, tracing Warhol’s dynamic career from the late forties to the end of the eighties and creating a stunning compendium whose pieces, due to their rarity, value, and prestige as part of a museum or other collection, could simply never all be acquired by a single collector. Casual art lovers know Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Marilyn Diptych, but Andy Warhol: The Impossible Collection goes deeper, revealing and revisiting some less ubiquitous yet equally powerful pieces, spanning paintings, prints, sculpture, films, and photography, from Warhol’s astonishing oeuvre.

Book excerpt: “The Hamptons” is synonymous with luxury. Simply mentioning the name conjures images of poolside soirées, grandiose waterfront estates and endless days on the beach socializing with the upper echelon. But before this famed peninsula became the summer haunt of the glitterati, its forty miles of rolling sand dunes provided the perfect landscape for English settlers. Once New York high society caught wind of the charming hamlets and salty air, its members—from the Fords to the Vanderbilts—soon turned The Hamptons into a summer oasis. Next came the creatives seeking solitude, a place to write and sketch, away from the urban cacophony. John Steinbeck in Sag Harbor. Jackson Pollock in the Springs. And Andy Warhol in Montauk. Now, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Calvin Klein, Madonna, Alec Baldwin and Martha Stewart all enjoy Hamptons homes. They may come from different realms, but what’s one thing all Hamptonites, honorary or official, can agree on? The locale boasts a unique allure—one that morphs to meet the desires of its next seasonal guest or lifelong dweller.

Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of the identity of the agro-pastoral Saho community in Eritrea, which was cemented during centuries of confrontation with Abyssinian rulers and by their rebellion against external domination. It examines the emergence of the Saho's national consciousness and the process of political identity formation during the British Military Administration in competition with the pro-Ethiopian Unionist Party. The book describes the active participation of the Saho in the national liberation struggle of Eritrea, and it evaluates the impact of post-independence policies of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front/People's Front for Democracy and Justice on the Saho community.
