Book Synopsis The Weave of My Life by : Urmila Pawar
Download or read book The Weave of My Life written by Urmila Pawar and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My mother used to weave aaydans, the Marathi generic term for all things made from bamboo. I find that her act of weaving and my act of writing are organically linked. The weave is similar. It is the weave of pain, suffering, and agony that links us." Activist and award-winning writer Urmila Pawar recounts three generations of Dalit women who struggled to overcome the burden of their caste. Dalits, or untouchables, make up India's poorest class. Forbidden from performing anything but the most undesirable and unsanitary duties, for years Dalits were believed to be racially inferior and polluted by nature and were therefore forced to live in isolated communities. Pawar grew up on the rugged Konkan coast, near Mumbai, where the Mahar Dalits were housed in the center of the village so the upper castes could summon them at any time. As Pawar writes, "the community grew up with a sense of perpetual insecurity, fearing that they could be attacked from all four sides in times of conflict. That is why there has always been a tendency in our people to shrink within ourselves like a tortoise and proceed at a snail's pace." Pawar eventually left Konkan for Mumbai, where she fought for Dalit rights and became a major figure in the Dalit literary movement. Though she writes in Marathi, she has found fame in all of India. In this frank and intimate memoir, Pawar not only shares her tireless effort to surmount hideous personal tragedy but also conveys the excitement of an awakening consciousness during a time of profound political and social change.
Book Synopsis Perl for System Administration by : David N. Blank-Edelman
Download or read book Perl for System Administration written by David N. Blank-Edelman and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2000 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people plan to become administrators. The rest of us are thrust into it: we are webmasters, hobbyists, or just the default "technical people" on staff who are expected to keep things running. After some stumbling around repeating the same steps over and over again (and occasionally paying the price when we forget one), we realize that we must automate these tasks, or suffer endless frustration. Thus enters Perl. The Perl programming language is ideal for writing quick yet powerful scripts that automate many administrative tasks. It's modular, it's powerful, and it's perfect for managing systems and services on many platforms.Perl for System Administration is designed for all levels of administrators--from hobbyists to card-carrying SAGE members--sysadmins on multi-platform sites. Written for several different platforms (Unix, Windows NT, and Mac OS), it's a guide to the pockets of administration where Perl can be most useful for sites large and small, including: Filesystem management User administration with a dash of XML DNS and other network name services Database administration using DBI and ODBC Directory services and frameworks like LDAP and ADSI Using email for system administration Working with log files of all kinds Each chapter concentrates on a single administrative area, discusses the possible pitfalls, and then shows how Perl comes to the rescue. Along the way we encounter interesting Perl features and tricks, with many extended examples and complete programs. The scripts included in the book can simply be used as written or with minimal adaptation. But it's likely that readers will also get a taste of what Perl can do, and start extending those scripts for tasks that we haven't dreamed of.Perl for System Adminstration doesn't attempt to teach the Perl language, but it is an excellent introduction to the power and flexibility of Perl, and it whets the appetite to learn more. It's for anyone who needs to use Perl for system administration and needs to hit the ground running.

Book Synopsis Translation, Poetics, and the Stage by : Romy Heylen
Download or read book Translation, Poetics, and the Stage written by Romy Heylen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book establishes an analytical model for the description of existing translations in their historical context within a framework suggested by systemic concepts of literature. It argues against mainstream 20th-century translation theory and, by proposing a socio-cultural model of translation, takes into account how a translation functions in the receiving culture. The case studies of successive translations of "Hamlet" in France from the eighteenth century neoclassical version of Jean-Francois Ducis to the 20th-century Lacanian, post-structuralist stage production of Daniel Mesguich show the translator at work. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the changing theatrical and literary norms to which translators through the ages have been bound by the expectations both of their audiences and the literary establishment.
Book Synopsis Translation as Social Action by : Palma Zlateva
Download or read book Translation as Social Action written by Palma Zlateva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Translation as Social Action is a varied collection of essays, which addresses translation as social action as its central theme, the book proposes a model of the translator as an agent in his or her own right. Translation is seen not just as a transfer of meanings from one language to another, but rather as an arena in which different cultures meet in the person of the translator. This perspective provides a complete contrast to Western translation studies, concerned with whether or not translation is really possible. Together the essays reveal a distinct tradition grappling with the most important topics in translation studies in ways that are different and challenging. The collection is essential reading for translation studies, as well as providing an interesting perspective on comparative literature and Eastern European studies.

Book Synopsis De-eroticizing Assault by : Kalpana Kannabirān
Download or read book De-eroticizing Assault written by Kalpana Kannabirān and published by Popular Prakashan. This book was released on 2002 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the many hegemonies that confront women and men today, the authors present fresh insights on the linkages among gender, culture and politics. Their 'concerns in politics have centred on questions of culture and representation, on power and hegemonies that find legitimacy, in globalisation, and the imperatives of anti-communal struggles'. They analyse the coalition between globalisation and fundamentalism and consider the disturbing portents for women, children, minorities and dalits. While reflecting on the increase in state repression, they also critique the way the Left revolutionary parties too restrict women's engagement.
Book Synopsis We Also Made History by : Meenakshi Moon
Download or read book We Also Made History written by Meenakshi Moon and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2004-12-30 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in Marathi in 1989, this contemporary classic details the history of women’s participation in the Dalit movement led by Dr B.R. Ambedkar, for the first time. Focusing on the involvement of women in various Dalit struggles since the early twentieth century, the book goes on to consider the social conditions of Dalit women’s lives, daily religious practices and marital rules, the practice of ritual prostitution, and women’s issues. Drawing on diverse sources including periodicals, records of meetings, and personal correspondence, the latter half of the book is composed of interviews with Dalit women activists from the 1930s. These first-hand accounts from more than forty Dalit women make the book an invaluable resource for students of caste, gender, and politics in India. A rich store of material for historians of the Dalit movement and gender studies in India, We Also Made History remains a fundamental text of the modern women’s movement.
Download or read book Sangati written by Pāmā and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of the Tamil novel Sangati is a fine example of Dalit writing, and flouts any received notions of what a novel should be. It has no plot in the normal sense, nor any main characters. In terms of structure, it seeks to create a Dalit-feminist perspective and explores the impact of a number of discriminations--compounded above all, by poverty--suffered by Dalit women.
