Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative Takes to the City presents the mosaic of relations and socio-spatial conditions which compose the plurality of contemporary everyday space(s) in cities, offering "a view from below". It proposes a multidisciplinary and gendered approach to the (relational) spatialities and temporalities of the everyday, of new mobilities and of global and local networks which constitute urban life in contemporary cities. The book raises an empirically informed theoretical proposition which springs from the multiplicity of everyday experiences, as a laboratory for understanding recent socio-spatial, political and ideological transformations. Each chapter takes forward the theoretical argument based on one or more examples of concrete cities, in order to unveil the complexity and diversity of the urban condition in changing conjunctures, in which local practices connect and collide with global developments.

Download or read book Sin City North written by Holly M. Karibo and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early decades of the twentieth century sparked the Detroit-Windsor region's ascendancy as the busiest crossing point between Canada and the United States, setting the stage for socioeconomic developments that would link the border cities for years to come. As Holly M. Karibo shows, this border fostered the emergence of illegal industries alongside legal trade, rapid industrial development, and tourism. Tracing the growth of the two cities' cross-border prostitution and heroin markets in the late 1940s and the 1950s, Sin City North explores the social, legal, and national boundaries that emerged there and their ramifications. In bars, brothels, and dance halls, Canadians and Americans were united in their desire to cross racial, sexual, and legal lines in the border cities. Yet the increasing visibility of illicit economies on city streets—and the growing number of African American and French Canadian women working in illegal trades—provoked the ire of moral reformers who mobilized to eliminate them from their communities. This valuable study demonstrates that struggles over the meaning of vice evolved beyond definitions of legality; they were also crucial avenues for residents attempting to define productive citizenship and community in this postwar urban borderland.

Book excerpt: The English-born John Henry Brown (1810-1905) went to sea at an early age and was living among the Cherokees in 1843 when he set out for the Pacific Coast. Reminiscences and incidents of "the early days" of San Francisco (1886) describes his early work at Sutter's Fort before his permanent move to San Francisco, where he became a saloonkeeper and hotelkeeper. He offers a painstaking picture of the transformation of San Francisco's people and business patterns with the discovery of gold and provides lively tales of miners, gamblers, gangs and vigilance committees, shopkeepers, and real estate sepculators. He lists early white women in San Francisco and provides a map showing San Francisco's building lots and their occupants in this early period.
