Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illinois Interstate highway network is deteriorating rapidly due to its age and heavy truck loadings. Unfortunately, the funds required for rehabilitation far exceed the available funds. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) faces many difficult decisions concerning prioritizing rehabilitation projects and anticipating future pavement conditions and rehabilitation needs. To assist IDOT in making these decisions, three analyses were conducted using the ILLINET pavement network rehabilitation management program. The first of these was an analysis of the accuracy of ILLINET' s pavement condition prediction models. The second was an analysis of the remaining life of each of the more than 1200 pavement sections in the Illinois Interstate network. The third was a comparison of the rehabilitation needs predicted by ILLINET to IDOT' s latest multi-year program. The results of these analyses are of immediate practical use to IDOT in forecasting pavement rehabilitation needs for individual pavement sections, Interstate routes, and the entire Interstate network.

Book excerpt: Emphasizing sound, cost-effective management rather than emergency repairs, this comprehensive volume offers practical guidelines on evaluating and managing pavements for airports, roads, and parking lots. The author focuses on the implementation and maintenance of successful management strategies for both network and project levels, with repair techniques also described . Detailed chapters: 1) outline step-by-step procedures for project and network level pavement management 2) illustrate effective cost analysis and budget planning for pavement maintenance 3) guide the reader in the selection and use of non-destructive deflection, roughness measurement, and friction measurement equipment 4) present state-of-the-art pavement rehabilitation and condition prediction techniques 5) demonstrates the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) procedure for airfields and surfaced and unsurfaced roads. Extensive appendices serve as a field manual for identifying all types of pavement distress and their causes, and hundred of photographs facilitate accurate pavement evaluation. Civil and pavement engineers will find complete information on pavement inspection, evaluation, and management in this indispensable reference.

Book excerpt: The Intelligent Decision Technologies (IDT) International Conference encourages an interchange of research on intelligent systems and intelligent technologies that enhance or improve decision making. The focus of IDT is interdisciplinary and includes research on all aspects of intelligent decision technologies, from fundamental development to real applications. IDT has the potential to expand their support of decision making in such areas as finance, accounting, marketing, healthcare, medical and diagnostic systems, military decisions, production and operation, networks, traffic management, crisis response, human-machine interfaces, financial and stock market monitoring and prediction, and robotics. Intelligent decision systems implement advances in intelligent agents, fuzzy logic, multi-agent systems, artificial neural networks, and genetic algorithms, among others. Emerging areas of active research include virtual decision environments, social networking, 3D human-machine interfaces, cognitive interfaces, collaborative systems, intelligent web mining, e-commerce, e-learning, e-business, bioinformatics, evolvable systems, virtual humans, and designer drugs. This volume contains papers from the Fourth KES International Symposium on Intelligent Decision Technologies (KES IDT’12), hosted by researchers in Nagoya University and other institutions in Japan. This book contains chapters based on papers selected from a large number of submissions for consideration for the conference from the international community. The volume represents the current leading thought in intelligent decision technologies.
