Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few foot notes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Though there are numerous books dealing with the Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents: Their Theory, Generation, and Transformation IN the following pages an attempt is made to furnish the reader with a general account of the principles, construction, and use of alternate current measuring instruments, generators, motors, and transforming machinery. Special attention is devoted to methods of testing. The first three chapters contain a sketch of alternate-current theory. The author has tried, as far as possible, to exclude everything of purely academic or historical interest; on the other hand, he has not hesitated to devote a good deal of space to matters which are either not generally understood, or which are of too recent origin to have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 1 The references, given at the end of nearly every chapter, are to the books or papers I have consulted when writing the chapter. In many cases they contain more detailed discussions of the same or similar problems, and will be helpful to the student. The proofs of several of the problems could have been considerably shortened by deducing them from the general equations of electro magnetism, but, in my opinion, the proofs given bring out the physical meaning more clearly to the electrical student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Alternating Currents This book represents the experience of seven years' teaching of alternating currents, and almost every chapter has been sub jected repeatedly to the test of class-room use. The authors have endeavored to include in the text only those things which contribute to the fundamental understanding of the subject and those things which are of importance in the engineering practice of to-day. It may be taken for granted that the authors are deeply in debted to Mr. C. P. Steinmetz, whose papers are unique in their close touch with engineering realities. W. S. F. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 2 In this volume I have endeavoured to give a sketch of the theory of the working of alternating apparatus in the hope that it will prove helpful to engineers, teachers and advanced students. In addition to the more elementary parts of the theory, an introduction is given to several of the more difficult problems which arise in practical work. The questions of armature reaction, of phase swinging and of free and forced oscillations, of the magnetic effects produced by various types of windings, etc., have often been discussed at the meetings of technical societies in this and other countries. In some of the papers which are published in the proceedings of these societies, theorems are quoted from books or journals which are not readily accessible, and in others an advanced theoretical knowledge is assumed. It was thought, therefore, that an introduction to the theory would prove useful to many. Formulae obtained from admittedly imperfect theory are often used in the practical design of electrical machinery, and it is of great importance to know their limitations. The utility of many of the theorems given below has been amply proved by modifications of the design of several well-known types of apparatus. I have to thank many engineers for their kind permission to make use of their papers or for furnishing me with experimental data. In particular I wish to thank the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon. In the first two chapters the theory of single and polyphase alternators 1b set forth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Instruments in Theory and Practice During the course of many years lecturing and working With instruments we have found the necessity for some work dealing With the theory beyond merely the first terms. It is hoped this book will meet With the approval of students in the higher classes, and of engineers. In many cases, and especially in the section on electric supply meters, the results of numerous experiments are compared With theory. The theory of the induction meter is extremely complex, and the explanations given are sometimes quite erroneous. We hope the views we set forth Will prove useful. The instruments Which have been selected are merely typical of those in use, and we propose completing the work by dealing with oscillographs, ondographs, and many alternating current instruments both theoretically and experimentally in another volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Alternating Currents IN composing a set of notes intended for laboratory use the writer has to consider two possible methods of treating the subject. One is to describe explicitly the different tests to be carried out, giving diagrams of connections, meters to be used and readings to be taken, and even giving the form of the log for keeping the laboratory data. Practically nothing is said regarding the theory involved in the test, the reasons for taking the various measurements, necessity of holding certain quanti ties constant and allowing others to vary, etc. This method of treatment makes the performance of the laboratory work extremely simple for the student as well as for the instructor. It is probably for this reason that most laboratory texts are written in this style. Such a method of presenting the subject to the student, however, necessitates very little thinking on his part. The connection of the apparatus and taking of read ings are reduced to a more or less mechanical operation, and even the keen student does not get from his laboratory work nearly as much material for study as he should.
