Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating-Current Machine Design Being Instructions for the Design of Motors and Generators This volume is especially prepared for self-instruction in the art of designing alternating-current machinery. Care has been taken to remain strictly within the province of design; the reader being assumed to possess knowledge of the principles of electricity and magnetism, and to be familiar with the theory of operation of electrical machines. The designs are carried out according to methods developed in actual practice and are supplemented by data and dimensions of lines of machines actually built by several of the largest American and European companies. The book is divided into two parts: one treating the design of direct-current machines, and the other that of alternating-current machines; each part being followed by a list of questions which clearly bring out the important points to be remembered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating Current Commutator Motor, and the Leakage of Induction Motors To study thoroughly the function of commutator motors worked with alternating current, it is well to go back to the fundamental electro-dynamic laws relating to a Single eon ductor in a magnetic field. Every alternating current and every alternating field are, considered for a very Short interval of time, a constant current and a constant field, at least as far as their interaction, the production of torque and its electrical equivalent, the production of e.m.f. Through cutting of lines by the moving conductor, are concerned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamos and Dynamo Design: Direct Current Motors; Alternating Currents; Alternators; Alternating-Current Apparatus This volume contains an exceptionally clear and complete treatment of the design of direct-current dynamos and motors, together with a detailed discussion of the theory of alternating currents and descriptions of modern alternating current machinery. In presenting the subject of design, a full discussion of the parts of the machines is first taken up, followed by complete demonstrations of design problems. The subject of armature windings receives special attention. Numerous winding diagrams are provided, indicating clearly the relative positions of the coils, pole pieces, and commu tator bars. The text accords with the best modern practice. The theory of the action of motors, their connections and the many systems of speed control are set forth in a clear and comprehensive manner. The importance of a knowl edge of alternating currents in the electrical-engineering profession is steadily growing. Illustrations and the graphical methods of treatment have been freely used. The method of numbering the pages, cuts, articles, etc. Is such that each subject or part, when the subject is divided into two or more parts, is complete in itself; hence, in order to make the index intelligible, it was necessary to give each subject or part a number. This number is placed at the top of each page, on the headline, Opposite the page number; and to distinguish it from the page number it is preceded by the printer's section mark Consequently, a reference such as 16, page 26, will be readily found by looking along the inside edges of the headlines until 16 is found, and then through 16 until page 26 is found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents: Their Theory, Generation, and Transformation IN the following pages an attempt is made to furnish the reader with a general account of the principles, construction, and use of alternate current measuring instruments, generators, motors, and transforming machinery. Special attention is devoted to methods of testing. The first three chapters contain a sketch of alternate-current theory. The author has tried, as far as possible, to exclude everything of purely academic or historical interest; on the other hand, he has not hesitated to devote a good deal of space to matters which are either not generally understood, or which are of too recent origin to have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Machine Design: The Design and Specification of Direct and Alternating Current Machinery A study of design is of the utmost importance to all students, because only by such a study can a knowledge of the limitations of machines be acquired. The machines discussed are those which have become more or less standard, namely, direct-cur rent generators and motors, alternating current generators, syn chronons motors, polyphase induction motors, and transformers; other apparatus seldom offers an electrical problem that is not discussed under one or more of the above headings. The principle followed throughout the work is to build up the design for the given rating by the use of a few fundamental formulae and design constants, the meaning and limits of which are discussed thoroughly, and the same procedure has been followed for the several pieces of apparatus. Induction Motor In the design of alternating current generators, the tendency has been to increase the Size of the units, until at present generators of 14000 K. W. Are in successful operation, and still larger machines are contemplated. However, the design of motors has generally been confined to those of comparatively small or medium horse power; Although induction motors of 1000 or 2000 H. P. Are in extensive use in the various steel mills through out the country, there are very few which exceed the above capacity. For this reason, the design of a 5000 K. W} motor must be based on theoretical considerations, With the help of any experimental results, obtained from generators which may be made to apply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Current Commutator Motors: Thesis Presented to the University Faculty of Cornell University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Before discussing the performance of repulsion motors, it is well to investigate a few of the properties common to all com mutator type, alternating current machines. It will be recalled that when current ows through the armature of a direct cur rent machine, magnetism is produced by the ampere turns of the armature current, such magnetism tending to distort the ux from the field poles. In the familiar representation of the magnetic circuit of machines, - the two pole model, - the arma ture magnetism is at right angles to the field magnetism, the armature current producing magnetic poles in line with the brushes. The amount of this magnetism depends directly on the value of the armature current and the permeability of the magnetic path. When alternating current is 'used, the change of the magnetism with the periodic change in the current pro duces an alternating e.m.f. Which being proportional to the rate of change of the magnetism will be in time-quadrature to the current. The armature winding thus acts in all respects simi larly to an induction coil.
