Book excerpt: ALTERED STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS LEARN HOW TO ACHIEVE THEM, THEIR BENEFITS AND THE SUBSTANCES THAT FACILITATE THEM ABOUT THIS BOOK Altered states of consciousness can be tremendously beneficial, especially when it comes to healing old wounds and releasing trauma. Most ancient civilizations were aware of this fact and, fortunately, the legacy of their wisdom has come down to us today. High performance, in any area of life, is always the product of an altered consciousness. Therefore, if we want to develop our potential to its limits, it is important to be willing to move to a more intense altered state that allows us to discover the deepest that lies within us. It is no coincidence that many of today's celebrities, from leading journalists to renowned surgeons and CEOs, employ various methods to alter their consciousness in order to maximize their abilities and more easily recover from life's ups and downs. These methods range from taking a meditative walk in the woods to fasting in a cave, taking a silent meditation retreat and using advanced breathing techniques. However, for many people, the most powerful change has been achieved through psychedelics such as ayahuasca and other natural plants or substances. CONTENT Introduction What Prevents Us From Entering The Flow State Of Our Maximum Potential? Can Psychedelic Substances Repair The Brain? Can Psychedelic Substances Help Heal Trauma? Why Are Psychedelics Not Part Of Western Medicine? What Is The Position Of Psychedelics Today? Are There Other Ways To Enter Altered Flow States? Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the safe and ethical application of expanded states of consciousness for therapists, healing practitioners, and sincere explorers Psychedelic medicines also known as entheogens are entering the mainstream. And it’s no wonder: despite having access to the latest wellness trends and advances in technology, we’re no healthier, happier, or more meaningfully connected. Psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, and LSD—as well as other time-tested techniques with the power to shift consciousness such as drumming, meditation, and vision quests—are now being recognized as potent catalysts for change and healing. But how do we ensure that we’re approaching them effectively? Françoise Bourzat—a counselor and experienced guide with sanctioned training in the Mazatec and other indigenous traditions—and healer Kristina Hunter introduce a holistic model focusing on the threefold process of preparation, journey, and integration. Drawing from more than thirty years of experience, Bourzat’s skillful and heartfelt approach presents the therapeutic application of expanded states, without divorcing them from their traditional contexts. Consciousness Medicine delivers a coherent map for navigating nonordinary states of consciousness, offering an invaluable contribution to the field of healing and transformation.

In The Marriage of the Sun and Moon, now updated with a new preface by the author, the esteemed Dr. Weil attempts to empower patients to take fuller charge of their destinies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What altered states of consciousness—the dissolution of feelings of time and self—can tell us about the mystery of consciousness. During extraordinary moments of consciousness—shock, meditative states and sudden mystical revelations, out-of-body experiences, or drug intoxication—our senses of time and self are altered; we may even feel time and self dissolving. These experiences have long been ignored by mainstream science, or considered crazy fantasies. Recent research, however, has located the neural underpinnings of these altered states of mind. In this book, neuropsychologist Marc Wittmann shows how experiences that disturb or widen our everyday understanding of the self can help solve the mystery of consciousness. Wittmann explains that the relationship between consciousness of time and consciousness of self is close; in extreme circumstances, the experiences of space and self intensify and weaken together. He considers the emergence of the self in waking life and dreams; how our sense of time is distorted by extreme situations ranging from terror to mystical enlightenment; the experience of the moment; and the loss of time and self in such disorders as depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Dostoyevsky reported godly bliss during epileptic seizures; neurologists are now investigating the phenomenon of the epileptic aura. Wittmann describes new studies of psychedelics that show how the brain builds consciousness of self and time, and discusses pilot programs that use hallucinogens to treat severe depression, anxiety, and addiction. If we want to understand our consciousness, our subjectivity, Wittmann argues, we must not be afraid to break new ground. Studying altered states of consciousness leads us directly to the heart of the matter: time and self, the foundations of consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of treatment failures among those afflicted by severe mental illness remains extraordinarily high. Despite this situation little has changed by way of available treatments. At present time, millions of people are taking antipsychotic medications as the only important component of their treatment despite the dangers, discomforts and high rate of non-complicance associated with these drugs. The treatment of the psychotic disorders has become so exclusively drug oriented that a significant impediment has arisen to the exploration of other approaches. Although the medical model deems virtually all of the psychoses as manifestations of an “illness”, some psychotherapists have consistently emphasized the potential for growth from within the psychotic process. This perspective is rooted in the belief that many “altered states of consciousness” (of which psychosis is but one type) reflect endogenous healing mechanisms that when properly understood and supported can be of great therapeutic value. In light of the shortcomings of current treatments, the notion of psychosis as a potentially restorative, healing mechanism is explored through examining the therapeutic potential of three other altered states of consciousness and their comparability to psychotic processes. The healing art of shamanism and shamanic states of consciousness is first reviewed, followed by a discussion of psychedelic drug induced states, and then the common, naturally occurring state of dreaming. Based on insights acquired from a review of these altered states, implications for how to improve the treatment of the psychotic disorders is presented.

Book excerpt: Transpersonal psychology is the study of human nature and development that assumes that human beings possess potentials that exceed the limits of ego developed normally. The main goal of transpersonal psychology is to integrate the spiritual experience within a broader understanding of the human psyche and consciousness. Transpersonal Psychology: Altered States of Consciousness, Biofeedback and Neurotechnology introduces the use of biofeedback and neurotechnology for the transpersonal therapist to induce and measure altered states of consciousness to deal with persons having mental conditions. The therapist and the patient can benefit from self-exploration and self-realization of altered consciousness that could be responsible for the mental condition of the patient. Chapters in the book start with an introduction to the theory of consciousness and transpersonal psychology followed by an explanation of the relationship of quantum physics to consciousness model. The book then progresses towards in depth topics such as biofeedback which covers the measurement parameters for understanding consciousness and computer-based technologies that help induce altered states of consciousness. Finally, the book concludes by linking all the concepts together to guide the transpersonal psychologist to measure and support transpersonal psychotherapy through a cybertherapy system. Transpersonal Psychology: Altered States of Consciousness, Biofeedback and Neurotechnology is an ideal guide for the transpersonal psychologist and psychotherapist and the enthusiast who wants to understand the science behind altered states of consciousness from a theoretical and experimental framework.

Book excerpt: Breakthroughs in Understanding the Biology of Consciousness This textbook covers fundamental discoveries about the biological basis for spiritual and shamanic states, transpersonal experiences, and consciousness itself. Derived from explorations into the very earliest prenatal development, this book describes how consciousness is based on biology inside the cell. Developmental Events: Spiritual and shamanic states are a legacy of our earliest prenatal growth stages. The Primary Cell: Consciousness extends from just one cell of the body. Triune Brains: The cell organelles are the basis of the 'subconscious' triune brains. Transpersonal Biology: Spiritual, shamanic, and psychic phenomena are based on access or perception of biological structures inside the cell. Inherent Dangers: Triggering certain prenatal traumas may cause serious or life-threatening problems. With this theoretical foundation, we can now understand what traditional spiritual and shamanic practices do at a biological level, as well as understand what makes different healing therapies effective. More important are the very practical applications - entirely new techniques for spiritual growth and healing become possible, through a synthesis of traditional concepts with modern microbiology. This textbook on the theory of peak states and the biology of consciousness is used in our therapist training classes. Although it is written for professionals, we've made it available for laypeople that are interested in the cutting edge of consciousness research and its applications to psychology and medicine.
