Download or read book Old Masters written by Thomas Bernhard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exuberantly satirical novel, the tutor Atzbacher has been summoned by his friend Reger to meet him in a Viennese museum. While Reger gazes at a Tintoretto portrait, Atzbacher—who fears Reger's plans to kill himself—gives us a portrait of the musicologist: his wisdom, his devotion to his wife, and his love-hate relationship with art. With characteristically acerbic wit, Bernhard exposes the pretensions and aspirations of humanity in a novel at once pessimistic and strangely exhilarating. "Bernhard's . . . most enjoyable novel."—Robert Craft, New York Review of Books. "Bernhard is one of the masters of contemporary European fiction."—George Steiner

Book Synopsis The Novels of Thomas Bernhard by : Jonathan James Long
Download or read book The Novels of Thomas Bernhard written by Jonathan James Long and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2001 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book's primary emphasis is on Bernhard's later fiction, but it also explicates the early texts of the 1960s and 1970s. The book makes use of insights from recent approaches to fiction that pay attention to what can be termed "narrative dynamics." Earlier studies of Bernhard have tended to remain within the descriptive framework established in narrative studies of the 1950s and 1960s; this book views Bernhard's prose works from a more nuanced vantage point."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Visible World written by Thijs Weststeijn and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did painters and their public speak about art in Rembrandt's age? This book about the writings of the painter-poet Samuel van Hoogstraten, one of Rembrandt's pupils, examines a wide variety of themes from painting practice and theory from the Dutch Golden Age. It addresses the contested issue of 'Dutch realism' and its hidden symbolism, as well as Rembrandt's concern with representing emotions in order to involve the spectator. Diverse aspects of imitation and illusion come to the fore, such as the theory behind sketchy or 'rough' brushwork and the active role played by the viewer's imagination. Taking as its starting point discussions in Rembrandt's studio, this unique study provides an ambitious overview of Dutch artists' ideas on painting.

Download or read book Museums and Design Education written by Rebecca Reynolds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can museum educators and higher education tutors enhance the way HE students use museums? There are many examples in the UK of museums and universities working together in productive and innovative ways, but these relationships tend to be based on individual enthusiasm and opportunistic arrangements. Despite the growing importance of museum education departments, higher education tends to be overlooked by museums. This book looks at the interaction between design students and museums, and explores issues, projects and emerging ideas about how museums can better support HE students. It illustrates the general lessons that can be learnt, both strategic and practical, which can help to bring about long-term and constructive relationships between museums and universities in order to enable effective student learning.
Download or read book Jordaens written by Zita Ágota Pataki and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 16 essays by a group of internationally acclaimed authors help contribute to a clearer perception of the complex facets of Jacob Jordaens' oeuvre -- and moreover to distinguish it from the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and his contemporaries. The title "Genius of Grand Scale" refers to the spectrum from history to genre as well as to Jordaens' preference for large formats. The greatness of the artist Jacob Jordaens needs to be emphasized, since even though he outlived Rubens for four whole decades, he was never able to escape from under his shadow. By reference to iconographic and iconological studies, single works are identified and presented in a broad review and the long, in many aspects fragmentary reception of his artistic work also forms a large part of the interpretations presented here. Furthermore, technical examinations of paintings assist in defining more precisely how they were generated. This overdue volume presents essential reading for anyone interested in Jacob Jordaens.
Book Synopsis Heinrich von Kleist: Style and Concept by : Dieter Sevin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of Heinrich von Kleist unfolds between precise depictions and moral extremes. Crystallized in words, his characters appear as paradigms of human fallibility. Their passions and obsessions, their inadequacies and longings are captured in a writing style that reveals its influence even in novels and plays of the twentieth century. This volume takes the literary reception of Kleist as one of its focal points and, furthermore, considers the author's oeuvre and his life on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death.
Book Synopsis The Upside-Down World: Meetings with the Dutch Masters by : Benjamin Moser
Download or read book The Upside-Down World: Meetings with the Dutch Masters written by Benjamin Moser and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plunged into a strange land at twenty-five, Benjamin Moser began an obsessive, decades-long study of the Dutch Masters to set his world right again. Arriving as a young writer in an ancient Dutch town, Benjamin Moser found himself visiting—casually at first, and then more and more obsessively—the country’s great museums. Inside these old buildings, he discovered the remains of the Dutch Golden Age and began to unearth the strange, inspiring, and terrifying stories of the artists who gave shape to one of the most luminous moments in the history of human creativity. Beyond the sainted Rembrandt—who harbored a startling darkness—and the mysterious Vermeer, whose true subject, it turned out, was lurking in plain sight, Moser got to know a whole galaxy of geniuses: the doomed virtuoso Carel Fabritius, the anguished wunderkind Jan Lievens, the deaf prodigy Hendrik Avercamp. And through their artwork, he got to know their country, too: from the translucent churches of Pieter Saenredam to Paulus Potter’s muddy barnyards, and from Pieter de Hooch’s cozy hearths to Jacob van Ruisdael’s tragic trees. Year after year, as he tried to make a life for himself in the Netherlands, Moser found friends among these centuries-dead artists. And he found that they, too, were struggling with the same questions that he was. Why do we make art? What even is art, anyway—and what is an artist? What does it mean to succeed as an artist, and what does it mean to fail? Is art a consolation—or a mortal danger? The Upside-Down World is an invitation to ask these questions, and to turn them on their heads: to look, and then to look again. This is Holland and its great artists as we’ve never seen them before. And it’s a sumptuously illustrated, highly personal coming-of-age-story, twenty years in the making: a revealing self-portrait by one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation.
Book Synopsis The Nihilism of Thomas Bernhard by : Martin
Download or read book The Nihilism of Thomas Bernhard written by Martin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the nihilistic basis of Bernhard's writing, and traces developments in the author's nihilistic stance throughout his career. In the first period of his prose fiction (1963-1975), nihilism is reluctantly accepted by Bernhard's fictional characters as a necessary response to a world perceived as meaningless. Various possible sources of transcendence are explored, and rejected. The autobiographical texts (1975-1982) then represent a sustained attempt by the author himself to transcend his own essentially nihilistic state. The apparent success of this attempt is quickly revealed to be illusory in the prose fiction of the second period (1978-1986), and it becomes apparent that nihilism is a no less necessary response to Austrian social reality than to the (more purely) personal problems which first motivated Bernhard's writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While imported Chinese porcelain had become a valuable commodity in Europe in the seventeenth century, local attempts to produce porcelain long remained unsuccessful. At last the secret of hard-paste porcelain was uncovered, and in 1710 the first European porcelain was manufactured in Saxony. Meissen porcelain, still manufactured today, soon ranked in value with silver and gold. This thorough and lavishly illustrated volume explores the early years of Meissen porcelain and how the princes of Saxony came to use highly prized porcelain pieces as diplomatic gifts for presentation to foreign courts. An eminent team of international contributors examines the trade of Meissen with other nations, from England to Russia. They also investigate the cultural ambience of the Dresden Court, varying tastes of the markets, the wide range of porcelain objects, and their designers and makers. Individual chapters are devoted to gifts to Denmark, other German courts, the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, France, and other nations. For every Meissen collector or enthusiast, this book will be not only a treasured handbook but also a source of visual delight.
Download or read book Künstler-Bilder written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
