Book excerpt: The dangers of ancient technology loom over the Polity in the sequel to The Soldier, Neal Asher’s latest action-packed space opera series. The haiman Orlandine, charged with safeguarding lethal Jain tech swirling inside an accretion disc located in the distant reaches of space, has weaponized a black hole to eliminate the threat. But others are suspicious of her motives, and both the Polity AIs and the leaders of the alien prador kingdom dispatch fleets of warships in anticipation of conflict. As the black hole continues to eat its way through the planets in the accretion disc, making its way towards a dead sun, it becomes clear the disc has been hiding a larger secret. Nefarious forces with ulterior motives have manipulated Orlandine into deploying the black hole, triggering a series of larger events that will uncover a danger far older than even the Polity itself. From British science fiction writer Neal Asher, The War Ship picks up right where its predecessor, The Soldier, left off, showcasing Asher’s unique take on cutting-edge and fast-paced science fiction.

Denny Martel, a twenty-seven-year-old trial lawyer wunderkind in the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office, becomes deeply involved in the hunt for a serial killer. He soon realizes he's the target of a secret LAPD unit, and his Malibu beach cottage is no refuge. In the gritty LA trial courts, on the Venice Beach testosterone-charged "A" basketball court, in the "wilds" of Malibu, and among an amazing cadre of beautiful and complicated women, Denny seeks justice and his true self. In the summer of 1968, a serial killer is loose in Los Angeles. The press calls him the Night Slayer, and he robs "mom-and-pop" businesses in South Central LA, leaving no witnesses. As the Slayer's body count increases, the city begins to destabilize and a repeat of the Watts Riots is brewing. Denny's high school pal, Jack Hansen, is the lead LAPD homicide detective charged with catching the Slayer. As the Public Defender for many of the suspects arrested, Denny begins to formulate a profile of the Slayer. As the search continues, Denny wins and loses trials and women. He's an emerging star in the criminal justice system and is realizing the significance and vulnerability of that role. Then, using Denny's insight to the Slayer, Jack makes the arrest, and Denny will now represent the Slayer at the lineup.

Book excerpt: The serene life of the irrepressibly optimistic little girl was disturbed. Child-play and fantasies gave way to fear and anguish. Wild thoughts were going through her mind while the German bombs were falling nearby her picturesque retreat: How dare they disturb my peaceful space? Who are these people who want to conquer the world? Why aren't they satisfied with their own terra firma, their own hideaways and retreats, their own Camelot? Why would they bother my magical surroundings and the environment of all the other children of other lands? Don't they have dreams, other than destroy other people's dreams? Weren't they ever children themselves, or better yet, don't they have children of their own? Don't they know that, above all, children need to feel safe and secure, warm and loved? Only three chapters were completed with the anticipation that the conclusion of this book would be optimistic and cheerful, along with the fervent wish that never again would children have live through the horrors of war and its dreadful consequences. The dreadful morning of September 11, 2001, however, changed the mood of us all. The devastation of the horrific events in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania will haunt us forever.

The responses to and reflections upon the manifestations of sexuality provide fascinating insights into fundamental aspects of medieval and early-modern culture. This interdisciplinary volume with articles written by social historians, literary historians, musicologists, art historians, and historians of religion and mental-ity demonstrates how fruitful collaborative efforts can be in the exploration of essential features of human society. Practically every aspect of culture both in the Middle Ages and the early modern age was influenced and determined by sexuality, which hardly ever surfaces simply characterized by prurient interests. The treatment of sexuality in literature, chronicles, music, art, legal documents, and in scientific texts illuminates central concerns, anxieties, tensions, needs, fears, and problems in human society throughout times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wally Chappell has been preaching since his first appointment as Pastor in 1947, while a student in seminary. He was always known as an interesting, challenging preacher, who held the interest of his congregation. Many, across the years, encouraged him to put some sermons in print. He first tried his hand at retirement at 69, but became employed in community relations work for a local mortgage company for five and half years; and then came back to full-time church work as a retired associate for pastoral care at First United Methodist Church of Dallas where he remained on staff until 87 years of age. He finally got retirement right. Yes, he said, I was wobbly, and fearful Id spill communion wine on someone. Friends continued to encourage him to publish, and this book is the result. It is mostly sermons, with a eulogy, a devotional and a couple of stories tossed in. All were delivered at First Methodist Church of Dallas, some in Sunday school classes, retreats and studies. His engineer background shows, in a practical, matter-of-fact approach to spiritual matters. He is known as a clear thinker, and a passionate advocate of the Christian Way. He writes for speech, not the written page, and it shows in his syntax. He said, I guess I preach everything I read, sort of trying on the words for oral delivery. And it shows in reading the text. He is a Biblical preacher, almost always seeking to develop some passage of scripture. The reader will find these messages thought provoking, challenging and clear. It may help to know there were other Wallace Chappells in the Methodist ministry. This is the Texan, by birth, rearing and service, who sees himself a citizen of the world, and a lover of mountains.

Book excerpt: The sorceress of psychological suspense is back with the sixth book in her highly-anticipated new Nowhere USA series. Ninie Hammon is at her career-best in Blown Away — a story that keeps you guessing even as the secrets are revealed. Viola Tackett's oldest son plays a childish game with disastrous results. What might have remained a personal tragedy, blossoms into a town-wide catastrophe when he lies to his mother about what happened. Now Viola Tackett is hatching a diabolical plot to get revenge. Her plan endangers the life of every man, woman, and child in Nowhere County. Meanwhile, the Reverend Duncan Norman believes he's figured out who murdered his daughter from the clues in her diary, and he has no plans to turn the other cheek. When he goes in search of an eye for an eye, he's not willing to hear that he might have the wrong guy. As the residents of Nowhere County squabble among themselves and kill each other, The Jabberwock keeps on silently picking them off one by one. Time is running out for everyone. ★★★★★ "I don’t know how she does it, but each book in this Nowhere County series just gets better and better." -- Bonsterblack ★★★★★ "If you’ve been enjoying this roller coaster ride with us, the best (in my opinion) is waiting for you with Blown Away, Book 6 of the Nowhere series. If you haven’t been reading Ninie Hammon’s incredible journey through the Middle of Nowhere, why not? You are missing one of the best major thrillers ever written." -- Kate Hickey ★★★★★ "This is the 6th in a series of 7 novels about an incredible, unexplainable, maddening, murderous event that is taking place in a town called Nowhere. How in the wide world of sports is this going to end? I was expecting the 6th book to tie up some loose ends, and it only (delightfully) added more frayed ones. I love Ninie's writing because I'm on the edge of my seat for most of her books. Oh, and WAIT until you read the "rock climbing" section...I don't think I took a breath during the whole chapter!" -- K. Koch ★★★★★ "I am completely BLOWN AWAY by this addition to the Nowhere, USA series. Oh. My. Goodness. This has been brain-cramping from the start: I think I referred to it in an earlier review as the love child of Lost and The Twilight Zone. If that's true, then it's cousin must be Alice in Wonderland because things just keep getting "curiouser and curiouser."" -- Kentucky Bohemian Blown Away is the sixth book in Ninie Hammon's new series, Nowhere USA, a riveting psychological thriller about the residents of a forgotten county that inexplicably sinks through reality to find itself in the middle of Nowhere. Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will find themselves right at home in Nowhere USA.

Book excerpt: The evil prosthesis of Captain Hook, the comical speech of Porky Pig, and the bumbling antics of Mr. Magoo are all examples of images in our culture which can become the basis of negative attitudes and subliminal prejudice towards persons with disabilities. These attitudes influence and underlie discriminatory acts, resulting in negative treatment and segregation. A teacher's ability to recognize and counter such images may well determine the success of inclusion and mainstreaming programs in our schools and society. Well-researched and well-written, this book offers practical guidance as grounded in solid research to schools that are wrestling with how to mainstream children with disabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Blood on Their Hands, author Forrest Redd unravels the past eight years of the Bush Administration in an attempt to prove why George W. Bush should be convicted of inciting an illegal war. Fueled by the outcome of the 2004 election, Redd demonstrates how the right-leaning media pundits assisted Bush in misleading the public and why the American people share the responsibility of Bush's disappointing, dangerous presidency. In reevaluating the way the American people handled the Bush Administration, Redd transfers the blame for eight years of failures and atrocities from Bush squarely to the shoulders of the American voters. Redd also includes chapters on the Supreme Court's role in determining the 2000 election, a side-by-side comparison of Kerry and Bush in the 2004 election, and a reaction to the proposed change brought about by the 2008 election. Ultimately, Blood on Their Hands is a call to the nation to come together and practice common sense, strive for enlightenment, and exercise decency, tolerance, and compassion.

Book excerpt: In addition to established playwrights such as Heinar Kipphardt, Franz Xaver Kroetz, and Heiner Muller, the book looks at the younger generation of playwrights not yet fully taken into account by research: writers such as Oliver Bukowski, Dea Loher, Marius von Mayenburg, Albert Ostermaier, and Theresia Walser. It gives an overview of the most important developments in recent German political drama through analysis of more than forty contemporary plays, clearly tracing connections between politics and theater. Each chapter is preceded by a short introduction into the respective political topic, providing the framework for the study of drama as a political tool and making it easy for students to see the multiple ways in which plays respond to political change. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in drama and theater studies and German literature."--BOOK JACKET.
