Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Found in all organisms, the alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complexes have central roles in cellular metabolism and are major sites of regulation. The understanding of the organization, function and regulation of these quintessential multienzyme complexes has been greatly advanced by studies employing molecular biology and biophysical techniques. Although these enzyme systems have some features in common, their diversity in fulfilling unique organism - or tissue - specific roles is truly amazing. These systems have medical importance in areas ranging from defects in regulation (linked to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, nutrition defects), to inherited diseases (inborn errors, maple syrup urine disease) to acquired immune diseases (primary biliary cirrhosis). This book brings together wide-ranging recent findings on the structure(function relationships, gene regulation, and genetic defects of the alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complexes, namely the pyruvate dehydrogenase, alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and the branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complexes. A wide variety of experimental approaches together with new results presented in this book should serve as a resource for beginning to established investigators in the field as well as scientists who are interested in mitochondria, dehydrogenases, kinases, phosphatases, lipoic acid, thiamine pyrophosphate, and enzyme complexes.

Knowledge is imparted ranging from project engineering to program management and from a functional management role to, ultimately, director-level accountability for a mission-critical program as a valued employee of a Managing and Operating contractor for a one-of-its-kind, US taxpayer-owned crude oil storage venture involving underground caverns engineered into massive naturally occurring salt domes located near the border between southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas. The overarching Alpha aim is to seed this coursebook - which accentuates the innovativeness and pioneering spirit of the 2020 decade in progress - and make its actionable knowledge available to program practitioners globally to help them deliver better outcomes by applying intelligent approaches that I found most effective.

Book excerpt: A fundamental characteristic of metazoans is the formation of a simple, polarized epithelium. In higher animals, the structural integrity and functional polarization of simple epithelia require a cell-cell adhesion complex containing a classical cadherin, the Wnt-signaling protein β-catenin and the actin-binding protein α-catenin. I have investigated the evolutionary origins of epithelial cell polarity and of the cadherin-catenin complex. I show that the non-metazoan Dictyostelium discoideum forms a polarized epithelium that is essential for multicellular development. Although D. discoideum lacks a cadherin homolog, I have identified and characterized an α-catenin ortholog that binds a β-catenin-related protein. Both proteins are essential for formation of the epithelium, polarized protein secretion and proper multicellular morphogenesis. Thus the organizational principles of metazoan multicellularity may be more ancient than previously recognized, and the role of the catenins in cell polarity predates the evolution of Wnt signaling and classical cadherins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small acidic protein a-lactalbumin, one of the major protein components of milk, is one of the most extensively investigated Ca2+-binding proteins, which does not belong to the EF-hand family of calcium-binding proteins. It serves as a model for studies of the mechanisms of protein stability, folding and unfolding. a-Lactalbumin acts as a regulatory subunit of galactosyltransferase in lactose synthase, which catalyses the synthesis of lactose from UDP-galactose and glucose. It represents a classical example of molten globule state at acidic pH and in its apo-form at elevated temperatures. Three-dimensional structures of several ?-lactalbumins are determined. The protein possesses a single strong Ca2+-binding site, which binds Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+, and K+ as well, and several distinct Zn2+-binding sites. The binding of cations to the Ca2+-site increases protein stability against action of heat, various denaturing agents and proteases, while the binding of Zn2+ to the Ca2+-saturated protein decreases its stability and causes its aggregation. ?-Lactalbumin interacts with membranes, proteins, peptides and low molecular weight substrates and products. These interactions are modulated by the binding of metal cations to a-lactalbumin. a-Lactalbumin forms amyloid fibrils at low pH values and some folding variants of a-lactalbumin demonstrate bactericidal activity and some of them cause apoptosis of tumour cells. Thus, ?-lactalbumin is a metal binding protein, the function of which depends on its environment: it takes part in lactose synthesis in the mammary gland and could be important for lowering the incidence of cancer and various infections in breast-fed children.

In these secret societies there are activities and requirements that cause prospective members and members aliketo unknowingly enter into ungodly pacts and covenants. These ungodly practices lead to activities which include physical abuse, fornication, adultery, hatred, envy, strife, manipulation, social and intellectual elitism, abominable sexual activities and witchcraft. These organizationsattract people that are looking for something that only Christ Jesus can provide. However, the organizations appears as a light by their community service and networking abilities. This light however is afalse light.Once one gets into the inner workings of the organizations, the sin and soul inflicting antics are found deeply rooted in darkness. The authorsbeing former members that participated in ungodly activities within these organizations expose the physical, mental, sexualand spiritualdeath-dealing activities found in fraternities and sororities. This is by no means a kiss and tell composition, but it is a trying to save people from hell exposition. Actual accounts of sexual requirements, abuse, ancient ungodly spiritual practices, witchcraft, and required chantswhich denouncetheexistence the One True God are given in detail in this book.Ungodly spirits of oldhave found new vessels to operate inthrough these fraternities and sororities. The good thing about this book is that it not only exposes spiritual wickedness and old ungodly practices, but it shows people who want to be free how to find God, the Ancient of Days.Let the Truth be told. We encourage you to read this book if you arejoining a fraternity or sorority, are a member of one, are apastor, orhave a loved one in one of these organizations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracellular matrix proteins are serious, common human diseases that are caused by mutations in genes that encode these proteins. This has spurred a great number of researchers to study the extracellular matrix, sometimes by choice and sometimes by necessity. Much progress has been made in the last decade towards understanding what matrix proteins do and how cells interact with and respond to them. Volume 15 is a compilation of reviews by experts in their respective fields. The chapters in this book address the biology of a broad spectrum of extracellular matrix molecules and their functions in development and disease. This book has been designed to focus on a diverse subset of matrix proteins that have been shown to be important for development, function, and disease. The book therefore both presents a broad view of the field and provides crucial details about some of the best-studied matrix molecules. * Written by leaders in the field * Discusses the potential of matrix components to be used as therapeutic tools for the treatment and prevention of cancer * Offers a section on integrin signaling and the development of the central nervous system, detailing the migration of neurons and the glia * Covers a diverse array of molecules such as laminins, collagens, heparan sulfate proteoglycans, integrins, and more
