Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Phoenician Alphabet is the foundation stone upon which many Legends and Stories have been based, including the 'Story of Creation' in Genesis, the 'Mystical Kabbalah', and the 'True Art of Astrology'. And while it is highly probable that most people have some knowledge of these Ancient Traditions, the majority of Humanity have no understanding of how they originated, or of the message they convey to us, concerning our 'Perception of Reality'. This is because since their original conception, the context of these stories has been altered to reflect the philosophies and lifestyle of successive generations, until the Spiritual Wisdom which they exemplify is now often misunderstood, and even feared by many. The original Symbols of the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet are alleged to have been devised by a tribe of Canaanites around 2000 B.C., who later became known as the Phoenicians. And the Symbols are a simplistic representation of the Phoenician perspective of our 'Journey through Life', and tell the story of the Beneficent, Androgynous, Mother God-dess of Pure Magical Light, and the 'Miraculous Process of Self-Creation' which takes place within us when we pronounce the resonant sounds of the Spoken Word. The Sacred Phoenician Symbols were later adapted into Letters to record the Hebrew 'Story of Creation', 'Kabbalah' and 'Astrology' in written form; possibly first in the 'Sefer Yetzirah', (Book of Creation), and later in the Bible, to show us the 'Way to our Salvation'. However, the Phoenicians maintained that we do not need 'saving', only to change our present Life Story. The Tarot is also mentioned in the Manual, since although not directly related to the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet, it too tells the Story of our Journey through Life to our Divine Destination.

Book excerpt: Phoenician Guide to the Process of Self-Creation Almost everyone in the western world is familiar with the 'Alphabet', although not many people are aware of its origins and purpose for which it was 'created'. The modern Alphabet, which we use to form words and write stories, is an adaptation of the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet, believed to have been conceived within the womb of the androgynous Goddess of Creation, before Life on earth began. This first phonetic Alphabet is now assumed to have been invented by the Phoenicians over 4000 years ago as a guide to the 'Process of Self-Creation' which takes us on an Inner Journey into our Heart where we discover the Miraculous Essence of each Symbol and Letter of the Sacred Alphabet is already within us. The Manual provides an insight into the Magical Universe of the ancient Canaanites, the ancestors of the Phoenicians who had lived and fished along the Lebanese coast since around 7000B.C. However upon discovering the incredible 'Truth' concealed within the Symbols of the Sacred Alphabet they were able to turn any apparent adversity to their advantage, and so they became known as the 'Phoenicians', resembling the Legendary Phoenix arising from the ashes of a fire. The original meaning of the Sacred Symbols is explained in the Manual using Poetry, Coloured Illustrations, and Words that when Spoken induce the Sensation of Passion within our Heart, Soul and Body; which to the Phoenicians is the 'Path to Enlightenment'. And once we are aware of the Pure Magical Light of the Self-Reproducing Goddess within our self our misconceptions and deluded perception of 'Reality' is changed forever. The information in the Manual concerning the significance of the Symbols and Letters of the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet is the author's own interpretation, which is based on over fifty years of research and teaching Holistic Healing Methods and Spiritual Traditions in the UK and Internationally.

Book excerpt: In Casanova, noted author Ian Kelly traces the life of Giacomo Casanova, a man whose very name is synonymous with sensuality, seduction and sexual prowess. But Casanova was more than just a great lover. A businessman, diplomat, spy, and philosopher, he authored more than twenty books, including a translation of The Iliad. Confidant to many infamous characters—including Madame de Pompadour, Voltaire, and Catherine the Great—Casanova was undoubtedly charismatic. But how exactly did he seduce himself into infamy? In this richly drawn portrait, Casanova emerges as very much a product of eighteenth-century Venice. He reveled in its commedia del arte and Kelly posits that his successes as both a libertine and a libertarian grew from his careful study of its artifice and illusion. Food, travel, sex: Casanova’s great passions are timeless ones and Kelly brings to life in full flavor the grandeur of his exploits. He also articulates the fascinating personal philosophy that inspired Casanova’s quest to bed all manner of women. A riveting look at the life of the most legendary lover of all time, this is destined to become the definitive biography of Giacomo Casanova.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What was the role of anthropology in the German Enlightenment? Why did this discipline emerge as one of the most popular modes of inquiry in the eighteenth century, permeating fields as disparate as aesthetics, medicine, and law? As the essays in this volume show, the "body" of Enlightenment knowledge was by no means universal." "During the German Enlightenment the study of nature, humanity, and everything that humanity created was the topic of the day. But the period that defined moral reason as the sovereign human faculty also applied its scrutiny to the body that such a mind inhabited. What did it look like? Could moral superiority be deduced from physiognomy?" "In the massive effort to "educate" the German populace on what were seen to be the fundamental, a priori differences (physical and moral) between the sexes and the races, the European bourgeois man was considered to embody all human virtues and talents and stem from the only race and sex capable of ruling itself democratically and rationally. To examine the role of anthropology in this enterprise, contributors to this volume were asked to investigate what constitutes the German Enlightenment's interaction between its self-proclaimed rationalism and the pervasive presence of the non-rational; that is, the corporeal."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to traditional Enlightenment studies that focus solely on authors and ideas, Gary Kates' employs a literary lens to offer a wholly original history of the period in Europe from 1699 to 1780. Each chapter is a biography of a book which tells the story of the text from its inception through to the revolutionary era, with wider aspects of the Enlightenment era being revealed through the narrative of the book's publication and reception. Here, Kates joins new approaches to book history with more traditional intellectual history by treating authors, publishers, and readers in a balanced fashion throughout. Using a unique database of 18th-century editions representing 5,000 titles, the book looks at the multifaceted significance of bestsellers from the time. It analyses key works by Voltaire, Adam Smith, Madame de Graffigny, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and David Hume and champions the importance of a crucial innovation of the age: the rise of the 'erudite blockbuster', which for the first time in European history, helped to popularize political theory among a large portion of the middling classes. Kates also highlights how, when, and why some of these books were read in the European colonies, as well as incorporating the responses of both ordinary men and women as part of the reception histories that are so integral to the volume.

Enlightenment can be considered as the top of the mountain. There are as many ways to the top of the mountain as there are individuals who climb it. The end goal for each is the same. However, the action of the climb is the only way to achieve the goal of enlightenment. The spiritual knowledge hidden in the Major Arcana of the Tarot provides a basis for any individual’s path to enlightenment. It is not the only path to enlightenment, but it has endured from ancient times and is available to any individual who is willing to learn the knowledge and apply it to their daily life. The spiritual knowledge that was hidden in the Tarot is a map to the gate that leads to life. It is the gate that is spoken of by Christ, that is, the narrow and the hard way, and those who find it are few. The Tarot shows the way to be one of the few!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kaleidoscopic Vision of Malcolm Lowry: Souls and Shamans is an interdisciplinary investigation of the multifaceted, intuitive insight of international modernist writer Malcolm Lowry through an analysis of a selection of works and correspondence. Nigel H. Foxcroft analyzes his psychogeographic perception of the interconnectedness of East-West cultures and civilizations in terms of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican customs; the Mexican Day of the Dead festival; the Atlantis myth; surrealism; and Russian literary, filmic, and political influences. He traces his intellectual efforts in pursuing philosophical and cosmic knowledge to bridge the gap between the natural sciences and the humanities. This monograph identifies Lowry’s attempts to reintegrate modernism with primitivism in his quest for an elixir of life for the survival of humanity on the brink of global catastrophe, as indicated in In Ballast to the White Sea and Under the Volcano. It also examines his sustained endeavors to attain psychoanalytical atonement with himself and his environment in Ultramarine, Swinging the Maelstrom, “The Forest Path to the Spring,” and October Ferry to Gabriola. It also discusses the odyssey on which Lowry and his literary protagonists embark to connect with the past and to gain a deeper insight into human nature in Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend is Laid, La Mordida, and “Through the Panama.” Scholars of cultural studies, history, humanities, Latin American studies, literature, and Russian studies will find this book particularly useful.

His publisher's imprint adorned the title-pages of the most important works of the eighteenth century, in fiction, poetry, drama, medicine, and philosophy. This is the first extended study of Millar's commercial and social role in the commissioning, production, circulation, and consumption of Enlightenment literature in Britain. Providing a new intervention on the culture of Enlightenment this study shows how and why Millar provoked major controversies through his role as friend, patron, and publisher to great rivals in the republic of letters. An unprecedent analysis of publishing and authorship at the intersection of politics, business, visual arts, moral debate, and literary self-fashioning, this study of Andrew Millar also shows the degree to which Scottish identity shaped a professional career within London's rise as the cosmopolitan centre of learning and trade at the heart of the British empire. This volume presents hundreds of previously unpublished letters that passed between Millar and his literary network, and includes the 52 letters that passed between Millar and David Hume, the majority of which have been edited for the first time since 1931. This is a major contribution to the material and intellectual worlds that defined the culture of Enlightenment in Britain during the eighteenth century, casting new light in the history of publishing and authorship.

Dowling who claimed that he had transcribed the text of the book from the kashic records, a purported compendium of mystical knowledge supposedly encoded in a non-physical plane of existence. In the later 20th century, it was adopted by New Age spiritual groups.
