But by all means you should be on the road in time for sunrise over these marvellous mountains. For long stretches your road will run through deserts of rock, - rough, bare mountains of solid rock, gigantic bowlders on steep brown hillsides; even the road over which you pass will often be furrowed with the tracks worn by long years of wagon wheels in the soft lime stone; and this desert country has a fascination all its own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey and the Roads of the East By the exercise of cool judgment and Christian charity the 1eader may say, I can just grasp your a1gu1nent that Germany has, not indeed a 1ight, but a reasonable claim to some sha1e in the work of developing lialf civilised countries. Two years ago the idea of a German T'urkey might not have seemed more monstrous to the world than the idea of a British India, a British Egypt, a French North Africa and indo-china, and a Russian Siberia and Central Asia. But you have forgotten that Mesopotamia touches the Persian Gulf, and that the Bagdad line is the short cut to India. If you allow the Germans to hold that line, what security have you that when they have spent a generation in recuperating from this war and in drilling the Turks, they will not lead a Turco German army to the conquest of India? There can be no absolute security against such a danger. At various periods between the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Jutland the F1ench, the Russians, and the Germans (or some aggressive elements among each of them) have coveted India \veo have only one security which is nearly absolute, and that is the contentment of the people of India with our rule. If we know how to keep that contentment and to deepen it by the adaptation of our institutions to their pro gress, we have little to fear from any aggressive Empire. There are other guarantees (apart from the moral guarantee that the Ger-mans have suffered lessons in this war which will not be ior gotten for a generation), notably distances, deserts and mountains, and our command of the seas. Book excerpt: Until now, it has been accepted that the Turkish Straits - the Russian fleet's gateway to the Mediterranean - were a key factor in shaping Russian policy in the years leading to World War I. Control of the Straits had always been accepted as the major priority of Imperial Russia's foreign policy. In this powerfully argued revisionist history, Ronald Bobroff exposes the true Russian concern before the outbreak of war: the containment of German aggression. Based on extensive new research, Bobroff provides fascinating new insights into Russia's state development before the revolution, examining the policies and personal correspondence of its policy makers. And through his detailed examination of the rivalries and alliances of the Triple Entente, he sheds new light on European diplomacy at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Some thing in the nature of a spasm, so human was it, communicated itself from car to car, and each in turn ceased to move. The jar wakened Rossiter, out stretched upon the top of some boxes and bales, from a heavy sleep, and on Opening his eyes and finding himself encompassed by a breathless tropical blackness he did not for an instant realize where he was. He put out his hand and encountered the boards of the car-roof just above his head. Then he recalled his whereabouts. He was streaming with perspiration, for the atmosphere of the confined space was stifling. All day the pitiless September sun had. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Turkish Misrule It avails nothing to the general prosperity of a country to possess fine seas, navigable rivers, rich mines, a fertile soil, salubrious climate, and every material for the creation Of industrious wealth - all of which the Osmanli has in these provinces. There must be the means of bringing these resources into action by safe and easy means Of internal communication, otherwise the country must continue to remain a terra incognita, and its inhabitants sink still lower in the slough of barbarism. Yet if we expatiate on these advantages to an Osmanli, whose narrow mind refuses to advance beyond the narrow circle of his forefathers, he will tell you that the empire has prospered, and still prospers, without the introduction of such unnecessary Frank innovations as carriage roads, bridges and canals, which could have no other effect than to facilitate an invasion of their old enemies, the Russians and the Austrians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 200 color illustrations, Byzantine Silk on the Silk Roads examines in detail the eclectic iconography of the Byzantine period and its impact on design and creativity today. Through an examination of the extraordinary variety of designs in these captivating silks, an international team of experts reveal that Byzantine culture was ever-moving and open to diverse influences across the length of the Silk Road. Commentaries from curators at key collections – including the Museum of Arts, Boston, the Smithsonian (Cooper Hewitt), the V&A and the Vatican – reveal the spread of silk embroidery and designs from East to West, and from West to East, from China to Rome, and from Constantinople to Korea. Drawing on exclusive imagery from worldwide collections within museums, churches and archives as case studies, their analysis of these unique woven silks explores the relationship between color and power, material culture and status, and offers broader insight into Byzantine culture, trade, society and ceremony. Byzantine Silk ... takes us on a journey from the past to the present, too, where Byzantine story-telling and image-making is revisited, through color, imagery and pattern, in contemporary fashion collections. Exploring Byzantine culture through a contemporary filter, the book shows how the Byzantine era still influences textile and fashion designers today in their choices of materials and colors, and their utilization of images and patterns, acting as a unique source of inspiration to designers and creators in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike today's interstate highway system, the earlier routes offered ever-changing scenes and roadside attractions. Although the Lincoln Highway crosses the entire country from New York City to San Francisco, the route it follows through Pennsylvania offers some of the most diverse and beautiful scenery. From the relatively flat terrain in the eastern part of the state to the mountains in the west, the highway passes through large cities and small towns, and almost all of these areas offered something to the motoring public. The popularity of the automobile gave rise to some of the highway's greatest attractions, such as Bill's Place and the S. S. Grand View Ship Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 2001. Along Pennsylvania's Lincoln Highway is a trip back into time, and it recalls the days when getting to a destination was half the fun.
