Book Synopsis Radiance from the Waters by : Sylvia Ardyn Boone
Download or read book Radiance from the Waters written by Sylvia Ardyn Boone and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sande Society of the Mende people of Sierra Leone is a secret female regulatory society that both guards and transmits the ideals of feminine beauty so fundamental to the aesthetic criteria in Mende culture. In this eloquent and moving book, Sylvia Ardyn Boone describes the Society, its rituals and organization, and the mask worn by its members. Her book is an evocative account of Mende life and philosophy as well as a unique contribution to the study of African art, one based on African conceptions about the person and the human body. This is a beautiful and beautifully written book. ... Boone writes in ways that reveal her evident devotion to Mende culture.--John Picton, African Affairs A major contribution to our ethnographic understanding of Mende culture, and to understanding the way concepts of women's bodies encode cultural messages about gender relations.--E. Frances White, Women's Review of Books A respectful approach to [the mysteries of the Sande], by an art historian who has tiptoed where anthropologists feared to tread. Radiance from the Waters deserves to be read. ... It provides something more interesting than esoteric knowledge: an extended meditation on notions of beauty and decorum and the way in which these can be translated simultaneously into art and ... advancement for women.--John Ryle, London Review of Books The first text to illuminate the power of the feminine aesthetic in West African art.--Ms.

Book Synopsis The Atlantic and Africa by : Dale W. Tomich
Download or read book The Atlantic and Africa written by Dale W. Tomich and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic and Africa breaks new ground by exploring the connections between two bodies of scholarship that have developed separately from one another. On the one hand, the "second slavery" perspective that has reinterpreted the relation of Atlantic slavery and capitalism by emphasizing the extraordinary expansion of new frontiers of slave commodity production and their role in the economic, social, and political transformations of the nineteenth-century world-economy. On the other hand, Africanist scholarship that has established the importance of slavery and slave trading in Africa to the political, economic and social organization of African societies during the nineteenth century. Taken together, these two movements enable us to delineate the processes forming the capitalist world-economy, establish its specific geographical and historical structure, and reintegrates Africa into the transformations in the world economy. This volume explores this paradigm at diverse levels ranging from state formation and the reorganization of world markets to the creation of new social roles and identities.

Richard Schweitzer went on to enlist interesting facts and history of this “cradle of civilization”. This is an interesting collection of facts and figures which make us realize that the Dark Continent was so called by this name, not due to any lack of development, but our own perception of the same. This book would shed light on the bright aspects of this continent and how much it has contributed to the growth, development and spread of civilization to all nooks and corners of the globe. This book is an attempt to share this newly discovered knowledge with the world.

Book Synopsis Islam and Trade in Sierra Leone by : Alusine Jalloh
Download or read book Islam and Trade in Sierra Leone written by Alusine Jalloh and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two centuries Muslims have helped shape the religious, cultural, commercial, and political landscapes of the colony, protectorate, and independent nation-state of Sierra Leone. Today, Muslims constitute more than half of the four and a half a million residents of Sierra Leone, and they continue to be significant contributors in the affairs of the country. It was in recognition of the historical and contemporary importance of Muslims that the Sierra Leone Studies Association(USA) sponsored a conference entitled, "Islam, Culture, Commerce, and Politics in Sierra Leone" in 1994 at Howard University, Washington, D.C. to study their varied contributions to Sierra Leone society from the pre-independence period to the present. This edited collection of essays, by leading specialists, is the result of this conference. Although the religious and commercial activities of Muslims in Sierra Leone have been examined in several studies, there still does not exist a single, comprehensive text about their role in cultural, commercial, political and religious affairs from the pre-independence period to the 1990's. This volume, which includes new data and perspectives, is designed to advance scholarship toward that more comprehensive account of Muslims in Sierra Leone.s
