Download or read book Vietnam 1946 written by Stein Tonnesson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vietnam 1946 is a masterful narrative of the immediate origins of the first Vietnam War. It is, by turns, vivid and shocking; it is always immensely revealing. Tønnesson brings forensic clarity to crucial events about which, even now, some sixty years later, fundamental misapprehensions exist. An outstanding work of scholarship of major international importance."—Martin Thomas, author of Empires of Intelligence "Tønnesson captures brilliantly the 1946 confrontation between two republics: France determined to redeem itself from Axis humiliation by regaining Indochina; Vietnam equally determined to retake independence after eighty years of colonial servitude. Tønnesson also demonstrates, however, that some leaders on each side really wanted a peaceful, mutually beneficial outcome. Descent into full-scale war was not inevitable. This is a carefully researched, clearly written analysis of a vital moment in the 20th century history of both countries. It is also a meditation on the elusive boundary between free will and determinism in human affairs."—David Marr, author of Vietnamese Tradition on Trial, 1920-1945 “Stein Tønnesson's Vietnam 1946 answers the fundamental question about the first of Vietnam's 20th century wars, the one fought against the French: how did it happen? He has written a meticulously researched account which restores their contingency to the events. The first Indochina war, like those that succeeded it, was not inevitable and Tønnesson explains why and how it happened anyway.”—Marilyn Young, author of The Vietnam Wars 1945-1990
Book Synopsis Parallel Communities by : Dennis C. Rizzo
Download or read book Parallel Communities written by Dennis C. Rizzo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of the small African American communities that formed in southern New Jersey during the era of slavery—includes photos. For slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad, names like Springtown and Snow Hill promised sanctuary and salvation. Under the pressures of racial prejudice, many free blacks, runaway slaves, and even Native Americans formed island communities on the periphery of South Jersey towns. While Lawnside and others continue to thrive today, others, like Marshalltown and Timbuctoo, now exist only in memory. In this discussion of these primarily African American communities, Dennis Rizzo validates their role in the preservation of tradition, definition of extended family, and creation of a social bond between diverse peoples; together they formed parallel communities based on, but independent of, the larger towns and villages familiar to residents of the Garden State.

Book Synopsis Recovery of Gray Wolves in the Great Lakes Region of the United States by : Adrian P. Wydeven
Download or read book Recovery of Gray Wolves in the Great Lakes Region of the United States written by Adrian P. Wydeven and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we document and evaluate the recovery of gray wolves (Canis lupus) in the Great Lakes region of the United States. The Great Lakes region is unique in that it was the only portion of the lower 48 states where wolves were never c- pletely extirpated. This region also contains the area where many of the first m- ern concepts of wolf conservation and research where developed. Early proponents of wolf conservation such as Aldo Leopold, Sigurd Olson, and Durward Allen lived and worked in the region. The longest ongoing research on wolf–prey relations (see Vucetich and Peterson, Chap. 3) and the first use of radio telemetry for studying wolves (see Mech, Chap. 2) occurred in the Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes region is the first place in the United States where “Endangered” wolf populations recovered. All three states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan) developed ecologically and socially sound wolf conservation plans, and the federal government delisted the population of wolves in these states from the United States list of endangered and threatened species on March 12, 2007 (see Refsnider, Chap. 21). Wolf management reverted to the individual states at that time. Although this delisting has since been challenged, we believe that biological recovery of wolves has occurred and anticipate the delisting will be restored. This will be the first case of wolf conservation reverting from the federal government to the state conser- tion agencies in the United States.

Book excerpt: "From the warmth of a kitchen with a smell of ginger cakes and cookies, to the heartbreak and politics of America in 1776, A Christmas Conspiracy is a historical page turner with love, loyalty and family at its core." -Gail Sweet, Burlington County Library "Not only has Dennis Rizzo provided a fascinating look at a part of the American Revolution only a few historians know about, he presents familiar characters in unfamiliar, yet completely believable, roles. This is a must-read for anyone interested in seeing how 'regular people' on all sides (Crown, Continental and Neutral) behaved during the struggle for Independence." -Ian Johns, Loyal American Regiment Elizabeth "Betsy" Ross and her household fall into the maelstrom that was South-Central Jersey during December of 1776. "The colonial rebellion," as King George refers to it, is in a crisis. Washington and his army are huddled between the capital of Philadelphia and the King's troops, across the Delaware River. Hessians and Scots have taken over most of the towns and are carrying away anything not buried in the yard or hidden in the forest. Three days before Christmas a small group of militia attacks Hessian outposts. Hessian Commander, Count von Donop, moves his entire force sixteen miles from their posting in Bordentown to the little hamlet of Mount Holly. After sending the gathered militia scurrying for safety, he dallies for the holiday. Colonel Rall, commanding at Trenton, will need his help the day after Christmas; but he is not there. Why? Told through the eyes of Betsy's apprentice Tom Dyer, and Hessian Jaeger Jacob Brunner, A Christmas Conspiracy brings into the open a little known event that changed the course of the rebellion. Read it and get to know the women that helped the colonials win at Trenton, giving new life to the revolution. Learn about the roles of ordinary people in America's first civil war. Enjoy a fast-moving tale of strife, intrigue and human endeavor, and never again be able to say, "I didn't know."
