Book excerpt: A modern-day Cinderella story. Before baby Alle could grow to realize and recognize the bountiful, sacrificial, parental love that was bestowed upon herthe meticulous nurturem care and protection of her mother and fathershe tragically lost them both the same day. But without question, her life's journey was providential. This adorable little orphan beat the odds and won the heart of a woman, her aunt Ella. So she grew up in a stable and affluent home with so much warmth. This unconditional love is what Alle Rednic longed for when she spent a portion of her young life in foster care. But when her aunt Ella became the legal guardian of her and two of her girlfriends (Stilya and Trixie) from the orphanage, Alle got a taste of what love feels like. But a few years later, Ms. Ella married a man who didnt seem to like Alle very much. For some reason, he treated her differently from other girls, and after a while, his contemptuous behavior toward her rubbed off on Stilya and Trixie. This was devastating for Alle because these girls were the siblings she never had. But the nightmare actually began the day Ms. Ella passed away. Alle was a senior in high school. And she felt like the one and only person in the world who loved her was gone. Phenomenally, that dark night at the beach, Alle wished upon a falling star. She wished for something that she yearned for most of her life, true love. And in a matter of seconds, a mysterious woman (Mother Nature) infused the power of a magic silver pen that had her name, Christmas Snow, engraved in gold. When Alle's life would have ended up as a woman desolate and alone, this unique gold silver ink pen, rewrote her destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the identification of the first cases of the coronavirus in December 2019, there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the origin and spread of the so-called 'coronavirus', SARS-CoV-2, and the cause of the disease COVID-19. Conflicting messages from the media and officials across different countries and organizations, the abundance of disparate sources of information, unfounded conspiracy theories on the origins of the virus, unproven therapies, and inconsistent public health measures, have all served to increase anxiety in the population. Where did the virus come from? How is it transmitted? How does it cause disease? Is it like flu? What is a pandemic? In this concise and accessible introduction, a leading expert provides answers to these commonly asked questions. This revised and updated edition now also covers how the virus mutates, how important these mutations are, how vaccines work, and what we can expect in the near and long-term future.

Book Synopsis Monoclonal Antibody Production by : National Research Council
Download or read book Monoclonal Antibody Production written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) petitioned the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on April 23, 1997, to prohibit the use of animals in the production of mAb. On September 18, 1997, NIH declined to prohibit the use of mice in mAb production, stating that "the ascites method of mAb production is scientifically appropriate for some research projects and cannot be replaced." On March 26, 1998, AAVS submitted a second petition, stating that "NIH failed to provide valid scientific reasons for not supporting a proposed ban." The office of the NIH director asked the National Research Council to conduct a study of methods of producing mAb. In response to that request, the Research Council appointed the Committee on Methods of Producing Monoclonal Antibodies, to act on behalf of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the Commission on Life Sciences, to conduct the study. The 11 expert members of the committee had extensive experience in biomedical research, laboratory animal medicine, animal welfare, pain research, and patient advocacy (Appendix B). The committee was asked to determine whether there was a scientific necessity for the mouse ascites method; if so, whether the method caused pain or distress; and, if so, what could be done to minimize the pain or distress. The committee was also asked to comment on available in vitro methods; to suggest what acceptable scientific rationale, if any, there was for using the mouse ascites method; and to identify regulatory requirements for the continued use of the mouse ascites method. The committee held an open data-gathering meeting during which its members summarized data bearing on those questions. A 1-day workshop (Appendix A) was attended by 34 participants, 14 of whom made formal presentations. A second meeting was held to finalize the report. The present report was written on the basis of information in the literature and information presented at the meeting and the workshop.

Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of the best papers from WEBIST 2008 (the Fourth International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies), held in Funchal, Madeira, in 2008, organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and co-sponsored by the Wo- flow Management Coalition (WfMC). The purpose of the WEBIST series of conferences is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the technological advances and business - plications of web-based information systems. The series focuses on four main topic areas, covering different aspects of web information systems, including internet te- nology; web interfaces and applications; society, e-business, and e-government; and e-learning. WEBIST 2008 received 238 paper submissions from more than 40 countries on all continents. Book Synopsis Gregory of Nyssa's Doctrinal Works by : Andrew Radde-Gallwitz
Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa's Doctrinal Works written by Andrew Radde-Gallwitz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory of Nyssa is firmly established in today's theological curriculum and is a major figure in the study of late antiquity. Students encounter him in anthologies of primary sources, in surveys of Christian history and perhaps in specialized courses on the doctrine of the Trinity, eschatology, asceticism, or the like. Gregory of Nyssa's Doctrinal Works presents a reading of the works in Gregory's corpus devoted to the dogmatic controversies of his day. Andrew Radde-Gallwitz focuses as much on Gregory the writer as on Gregory the dogmatic theologian. He sets both elements not only within the context of imperial legislation and church councils of Gregory's day, but also within their proper religious context-that is, within the temporal rhythms of ritual and sacramental practice. Gregory himself roots what we call Trinitarian theology within the church's practice of baptism. In his dogmatic treatises, where textbook accounts might lead one to expect much more on the metaphysics of substance or relation, one finds a great deal on baptismal grace; in his sermons, reflecting on the occasion of baptism tends to prompt Trinitarian questions.
Book Synopsis Diversity and Dissent by : Howard Louthan
Download or read book Diversity and Dissent written by Howard Louthan and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Central Europe was the continent’s most decentralized region politically and its most diverse ethnically and culturally. With the onset of the Reformation, it also became Europe’s most religiously divided territory and potentially its most explosive in terms of confessional conflict and war. Focusing on the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, this volume examines the tremendous challenge of managing confessional diversity in Central Europe between 1500 and 1800. Addressing issues of tolerance, intolerance, and ecumenism, each chapter explores a facet of the complex dynamic between the state and the region’s Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Utraquist, and Jewish communities. The development of religious toleration—one of the most debated questions of the early modern period—is examined here afresh, with careful consideration of the factors and conditions that led to both confessional concord and religious violence.
