Book excerpt: A book unlike any other, a daring experiential unfolding Spanish masterpiece, Your Face Tomorrow now leaps into uncharted new territory in Volume Two: Dance and Dream. Your Face Tomorrow, Javier Marias's dazzling unfolding magnum opus, is a novel in three parts, which began with Volume One: Fever and Spear. Described as a "brilliant dark novel" (Scotland on Sunday), the book now takes a wild swerve in its new volume. Skillfully constructed around a central perplexing and mesmerizing scene in a nightclub, Volume Two: Dance and Dream again features Jacques Deza. In Volume One he was hired by MI6 as a person of extraordinarily sophisticated powers of perception. In Volume Two Deza discovers the dark side of his new employer when Tupra, his spy-master boss, brings out a sword and uses it in a way that appalls Deza: You can't just go around hurting and killing people like that. Why not? asks Tupra. Searching meditations on favors and jealousy, knowledge and the deep human desire not to know, violence and death play against memories of the Spanish Civil War as Deza's world becomes increasingly murky.

Book Synopsis Not Yesterday, Not Tomorrow, Today by : Ruth H. B.
Download or read book Not Yesterday, Not Tomorrow, Today written by Ruth H. B. and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book jumps from present to past in my moments of PTSD when I relive the events that make these entries. The entire time from when I was six years old to when I am thirty years old in 2020 forms the complete book you now hold in your hand. Through the journey you take with me, my past is slowly disclosed in sections via chapters. I have a chapter for each phase of my life I was struggling with, such as depression, PTSD, abuse, and the major one for me--my miscarriage and death of my son, which is what birthed this book. This book was designed to be in the form of a journal instead of a communication between two people so that you could take this journey with me in these different areas of my life and because these journal entries were my therapy and way to survive. Through my journal entries in this autobiography, you can feel the raw emotion with me in the moment. You will feel the thoughts as they dripped with reality. I was very much a part of each chapter, disclosing the very real struggle in which I was thrown. Slowly the entire picture is painted before you. With every step you take into my journey, you become one step closer to understanding what life was like for me. This isn't your typical autobiography where someone sits and tells you about their life. In this autobiography, you get the chance to live it with me and all the people that it includes and all the experiences it conveys. You travel in my footsteps through my memories of the life I have lived and currently live. You read the experiences that have shaped the person who stands here today. This wasn't an easy road for me, and it has taken much courage to display these very authentic and real pages from my actual journal during this time. My aim is to have this help someone see the positive in life and be an encouragement in rough times in the wisdom I disclose from these experiences in my life. However, it is mostly for myself to say--I am still here to give a voice to the little girl who has been trapped inside for thirty years and to show the many ways that I am still fighting this fight. It is to give a voice to my son and the reality of miscarriage many do not see and those who do live with it on a daily basis. This is to give a voice to the all the struggles this covers and to the one struggling and to break the silence. Are you ready to come? Are you to come on this journey with me?

This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of more than fifty of Fred Craddock's sermons provides a glimpse of a master preacher at work. Amazingly, only one of the sermons was preached from a manuscript written in advance, as Craddock considered a sermon to be an event in the world of sound. As a result, the selections here wonderfully reflect and preserve Craddock's "voice" and engage readers with all the immediacy of the spoken word.

Book Synopsis Risking Truth by : Scott A. Ellington
Download or read book Risking Truth written by Scott A. Ellington and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ours is a world characterized by change. Often the most fundamental changes in our lives result from experiences of profound suffering and loss as we are wrenched from our familiar world and driven into one that is alien. In the midst of such loss, we are compelled to choose between trying to cling to the remnants of a reality that is passing away and trying to make a home in a strange new world. Biblical prayers of lament wait for us at this crossroad of loss and newness. Prayers of lament are marked both by loss and by the inexplicable silence of God. Everything we believe about God's justice and goodness is placed in doubt by his hiddenness. The cry of lament is an act of tremendous risk. To lament is to abandon the sinking ship of religious certainty and strike out in a small dingy, amidst stormy seas, in search of a hidden God. Faced with God's silence, the biblical writers are willing to place at risk their most fundamental beliefs and to lament. The Psalm writers risk the loss of the Exodus story by crying out to a God who has failed to save, demanding that he once more part the chaotic waters and make a way in the desert. Job risks the loss of a moral God by confronting God with his injustice. Jeremiah risks the loss of the covenant by calling out for God to return yet again to a faithless partner and a failed marriage. Matthew and John the Revelator recognize that the coming of Messiah is impelled by the cries of innocent sufferers. Throughout the Bible, lament risks the possible loss of relationship with God and presses for a new, though uncertain, experience of God's presence.
Book Synopsis Tomorrow's Memories by : Angeles Monrayo
Download or read book Tomorrow's Memories written by Angeles Monrayo and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angeles Monrayo (1912–2000) began her diary on January 10, 1924, a few months before she and her father and older brother moved from a sugar plantation in Waipahu to Pablo Manlapit’s strike camp in Honolulu. Here for the first time is a young Filipino girl’s view of life in Hawaii and central California in the first decades of the twentieth century—a significant and often turbulent period for immigrant and migrant labor in both settings. Angeles’ vivid, simple language takes us into the heart of an early Filipino family as its members come to terms with poverty and racism and struggle to build new lives in a new world. But even as Angeles recounts the hardships of immigrant life, her diary of "everyday things" never lets us forget that she and the people around her went to school and church, enjoyed music and dancing, told jokes, went to the movies, and fell in love. Essays by Jonathan Okamura and Dawn Mabalon enlarge on Angeles’ account of early working-class Filipinos and situate her experience in the larger history of Filipino migration to the United States.
