Book excerpt: “It is really quite simple,” the renowned French Canadian expert on pituitary surgery began his answer. Neurosurgeon defendant Sybil Norcroft, M.D., F.A.C.S., PhD steeled herself to hear the description that could possibly spell the end of her rising career. Even a glance at the imperturbable face of her defense attorney failed to convey any calm to the roiling tempest in the surgeon's brain. Plaintiff's Attorney Paul Bel Geddes was the attack dog who declared a jihad against Dr. Norcroft in the Brendan McNeely malpractice case and hounded her then and afterward to the point of distraction. The case seared Sybil's soul because she had her own doubts about how and why the handsome young scion of the wealthiest family in the city had bled to death on her operating table. Bel Geddes could not let the animosity that was engendered by the McNeely case go, and he relentlessly pursued the famous woman neurosurgeon in a personal crusade. After years of harassment, Sybil Norcroft had had enough, and she applied her brilliant mind and her considerable resources to ending the war declared against her. The war was a classic example of uncivil justice both in and out of the courtroom. How the JEST comes about is worth the reading. The book is full of fun, humor, anger, fear, pathos, intense emotional conflict, and tense and riveting courtroom drama. There is a considerable amount of theater outside the courts as well. You will want to read it in one sitting and to pass it along to your family and friends the next day.

Book excerpt: In Jest the Two of Us, Sammy and Vicki Ellis Griffis share the funnies of their lives about their rural childhood, mischievous teens, and their opposites-attract marriage that everyone said would never last. They chronicle the adolescent adventures of their children and grandchildren who have endured their sometimes warped sense of humor with their heads held high and their therapists on speed dial. Their 6,000 mile road trip, "We're Tripping," where Vicki is soaring above the clouds while Sammy is along for the ride only because he is married will have you. . .well. . .tripping. You will be entertained by Vicki's horrifying but hilariously funny account, "What, Me Worry?" a tale of the woe of a mother whose daughter has just asked to go on a date-all alone-with a boy-in a car. You will cringe with her husband and grandson as she admits her embarrassing, yet totally exhilarating addiction to yelling at referees in her award-winning short story, "I Can Quit Anytime I Want To." In, "Elvis, You are a Friend of Mine," Sammy's humorous account of the similarities between him and Elvis such as, "He was tall and good-looking. . .I am tall and . . .well, I am tall," will have you all shook up. In, "PopPop Won't Quit Singing," Sammy telling the grandchildren, "If ya'll don't quit fighting, I will start singing songs, and I know a hundred of them," will have you singing his praises. In Jest the Two of Us, you will find many other accounts, seasoned with humor and sprinkled with life, that will make you laugh, make you think, and yes, maybe even shed a tear or two.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1873 edition. Excerpt: ..."It is no matter," replied the author, "print any part thou pleaseth first." Many are the speeches, and the sermons, and the treatises, and the poems, and the volumes, which are like Benjamin Lay's book; the head might serve for the tail, and the tail for the body, and the body for the head, either end for the middle, and the middle for either end; nay, if you could turn them inside out, like a polypus or a glove, they would be no worse for the operation.--The Doctor. 375. OKGAN OF DRUNKENNESS. Spurzheim wa3 lecturing on phrenology. "What is to be conceived the organ of drunkenness f" said the professor. "The barrel organ," interrupted Bannister. 376. LITERAL RESPECT. Cicero said of a man who had ploughed up the ground in which his father was buried, Hoc est vere colere monumentum patris--This is really cultivating one's father's memory. 377. MISTAKE CORRECTED. The Rev. Sidney Smith, preaching a charity sermon, frequently repeated the assertion, that of all nations Englishmen were most distinguished for generosity and the love of their species. The collection happened to be inferior to his expectations, and he said, that he had evidently made a great mistake, for that his expression should have been, that they were distinguished for the love of their specie. 378. A DAY IN JENNY LIND's LIFE.--N. P. WILLIS. Many suppose that Jenny Lind's tour in America was one of uninterrupted pleasure and profit; but we opine they will change their opinion when they read the following report of the experience of a single day in New York--the day previous to her leaving that city, and after she had given away in charity to thousands of deserving objects no less than thirty thousand dollars. But while all these...

Book excerpt: Three times DCI Pascoe has wrongly accused dead-pan joker Franny Roote. This time he’s determined to leave no gravestone unturned as he tries to prove that the ex-con and aspiring academic is mad, bad, and dangerous to know. Meanwhile, Edgar Wield rides to the rescue of a child in danger, only to find he has a rent-boy with a priceless secret under his wing. DC Bowler is looking forward to a blissful New Year with the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, her dreams are filled with a horror too terrible to tell . . . And over all this activity broods the huge form of DS Andy Dalziel. As trouble builds, the Fat Man discovers (as have many deities before him) that omniscience can be more trouble than it’s worth and that sometimes all omnipotence means is that you can have any colour you want, as long as it’s black.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marprelate, Milton, Marvell, and Swift are among the best prose satirists in a remarkably rich literary era. Focusing on these key figures, ‘Betwixt Jest and Earnest’ examines the theory and practice of religious prose in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Recognizing the difficulties inherent in attempting to transform unimaginative animadversion into effective satire, it analyses the ways in which Marprelate’s tracts, Milton’s anti-prelatical satires, Marvell’s The Rehearsal Transpros’d, and Swift’s A Tale of a Tub variously resolve the decorum of religious satire. Although the study is not specifically an intellectual history or a rigid definition of religious attitudes towards jest, it does bring together basic symptoms of altering sensibilities in the period. Marprelate, Milton, Marvell, and Swift represent diverse religious dispositions, but they share a similar satiric vision. Each recognizes the central importance of manner, and all develop dramatic satire heavily dependent on character, an emphasis which often displaces the immediate issues contested, but never obscures the larger concerns the satirists pursue. Their preoccupations with the nature of tradition, their emphasis on the self, and their sensitivity to language reflect similar involvements in questions of certainty and absolutism. The virtues and abuses they find in such central questions are not unique to them or their time, but their emphases are, for they wrote in an age in which sensitive men could confront revolution and reaction with an assurance not easily attainable once that era had passed.

Book excerpt: No one knows the past, not even the secret society of Jesters who covertly maintain stability in Dharatan. All recent memory begins after a now-forgotten battle that almost destroyed their world. An amulet, linked to the very cause of the war, surfaces after 800 years. One of the most experienced Jesters steals it before it can be delivered to an unknown enemy. In an isolated cavern, outside the small northern city of Barnen, the Jester lies dying. Lani, a young woman seeking shelter away from trouble in the city, stumbles on him in his final moments. Now in possession of the amulet, and hunted by assassins sent to retrieve the jewel, Lani is driven away from the only place she's ever lived and becomes entangled in events outside of her control. More alone than ever and unsure who is friend or foe, she finds herself bound to this Jester's world in ways she could never have imagined. When she is told she is part of a bigger fate, her journey becomes a matter of life and death, as she seeks to unravel the truth. A Fool's Errand is Book 1 in the In All Jest series, a new epic fantasy series by fantasy author D.E. King.

Book excerpt: A dark, sexy subculture romp, All Lies and Jest is a novel about belief, delusion, and the dangers of being so open-minded that your brain falls out. When the USA becomes a fundamentalist theocracy, one of its first actions is to round up all the queers, atheists, deviants, geeks, goths and other undesirables it can find, and throw them out. The United Kingdom welcomes more than its fair share. But Britain is no haven; the Christian United States wants the Old Country to follow in its footsteps, and the fundamentalist tides are rising. Elinor Rosewood is a habitual non-conformist. As British as tea and spanking, she flees her small-minded home town for the dubious joys of London. It's only after she arrives that she discovers that the greatest isolation can come from being in the middle of a crowd of strangers. Refusing to be defeated by a mere ten million people, she resolves to track down some interesting weirdoes whilst they're still around to be uncovered. Her first discovery is a lettuce-eating vampire named Stefan. He's far too pretty (and silly) for his own good, but he's a stellar introduction to the Jesus' Blood Church, and to the sprawling morass of subcultures lurking in London's cheaper pubs. Elinor plunges into the chaos, little suspecting that her quest to avoid boredom - and maybe save the world a little - will bring her into contact with crazed cultists, devout flat-Earthers, were-mosquitoes, psychopaths, Otherkin, elves, vile plots, and more corpses than you'd normally expect to encounter on a pleasant evening out.
