Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coconut Planter So I sit and smile at the sea. I smile at the sea because I don't know anyone else yet to smile at. We have only been out of Sydney an hour or two, so naturally I haven't so far become acquainted with any one on board. I wonder if there are any nice people among them. You can never tell from the first glance at a crowd of passengers, can you? They look such a motley mob and not a bit individual; they all seem alike - just passengers. It's only after you've seen them for a day or two they seem to get sorted out into persons. The Heads have quite disappeared now. Good-bye, old Sydney. I wonder when I'll see you again. We left at midday, and all the way down out through the Harbour I leaned up against the rail in the sunshine, just devouring the last glimpses of Neutral Bay. That's where I used to live. I used to hate it too, and long to get away, and I'm jumping with joy to be setting out to see the world. Yet I had to wink my eyes quite hard once or twice as I saw it fade into the distance. How sentimental But just now and again, you know, I feel the teeniest bit lonely. Now, then, Sunny Shale when you're out on a big, big spree to see life. Do observe the capitals! Which being translated means I'm going up to Papua to start a coconut plantation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Cause of the Coconut Bud-Rot This disease of the coconut is by no means confined to Cuba. It has caused great loss in Jamaica, British Honduras, Trinidad, and British Guiana, countries that are important sources of coconuts for the United States. The trouble occurs also in less important places in tropical America. A dying off of coconut trees in the Eastern Hemisphere is thought by some to be caused by a disease identical with that in the West Indies. It is probable that this is a widespread trouble, occurring wherever coconuts are grown. Desultory studies have been made of this disease at intervals ever since the early eighties, and it has been ascribed to various causes, such as insects, fungi, bacteria, atmospheric conditions, and soil. A malady so actively destructive in certain districts demands more attention from scientific investigators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Water Relations of the Coconut Palm (Cocos Nucifera); On the Oil Produced From the Nuts; The Factors Entering Into the Rancidity of the Oil, and the Insects Attacking the Trees After this time, when any initial disturbance in the rate of absorption was assumed to have passed, the hole and bamboo were opened, the bottle carefully removed, the root being touched by the bottle once to remove any free drops, and then a weighed bottle of water was substituted, the cork always remaining with the root. When all necessary care was taken to prevent wetting the cork, neither bottle needed to be open for more than five seconds, and the exposure of the root was even for a shorter time. The chief error in this method of experimentation is probably to be found in the variable amount of water adhering to the root, but experience shows that the results are reliable to a limit of 1 centigram. The chief facts I endeavored to ascertain with regard to the absorption by the roots were the rate at which it normally takes place and the regular diurnal variation, if any, which may be found in this rate. I have also made some experiments on the absorption of solutions of potassium nitrate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
