Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Dee Cordry has produced a ground breaking historical narrative of outlaws and lawmen on the Oklahoma frontier of the early 20th Century. To much of the public and to many historians, the frontier era of outlaws and lawmen ended with statehood in 1907 and the widespread replacement of horses with automobiles. As proven by Cordry, this stereotype does not stand up to the facts. The opportunities exploited by outlaws and the challenges facing lawmen in the 1880s and 1890s would survive into the 1930s. Although bank robberies would continue to be the most common criminal activity, there were train robberies in Oklahoma as late as 1923. Cordry clearly illustrates that the Old West was still alive in the age of the moving pictures and radio.
