This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report from the Communities and Local Government Committee (HCP 65, session 2009-10, ISBN 9780215545466) looks at "Preventing violent extremism". For the Committee, as delivered so far the Prevent programme has stigmatised and alienated those it is most important to engage, and tainted many positive community cohesion projects. Moreover, the government's strategy to limit the development of violent extremism in the UK sits poorly within a counter-terrorism strategy. The Committee has set out a number of improvements for the Prevent programme and calls on the government to clarify urgently how information collected for the purposes of project monitoring and community mapping under Prevent does not constitute 'spying' or 'intelligence gathering' of the type undertaken by the police or security services.

Download or read book FiReControl written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government's programme to replace 46 local fire and rescue service control rooms with nine purpose-built regional control centres has been inadequately planned, poorly executed, and badly managed. Given the investment of public funds already committed, and the benefits that will accrue, the MPs conclude that the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) should press ahead with the FireControl project so long as Ministers can agree urgently a viable project plan that will see the project go live by a target date of mid-2011 and in which the main stakeholders can have confidence. The excessive cost of abandoning the project - an extra £8 million more than it will cost to complete - indicates the Department should continue with the project so long as it also: examines alternatives and provides assurances that FiReControl represents the best viable option for the future of Fire and Rescue Services; resolves its contractual dispute with EADS and implements a viable project plan; addresses the shortcomings in its management of the project; consults fully with FRS staff and professionals to define end-user requirements; provides assurances that the safety and security of the Olympic Games will not be compromised by the roll-out of new Regional Control Centres. DCLG should urgently to draw up and consult on contingency plans for any further failures in the FiReControl programme to ensure ongoing safe and effective fire and rescue services cover across the whole country.

Book Synopsis Ten Years Hard Labour by : Chris Williamson
Download or read book Ten Years Hard Labour written by Chris Williamson and published by Lola Books. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 42 years, Chris Williamson was a Labour Party member. In 2010, he was elected to Parliament to represent his home town. However, in 2019, he was unceremoniously suspended from the party after being subjected to a smear campaign, and he later resigned in protest at the betrayal. In this forensic memoir – free of his Labourist clutches – Williamson provides a unique ringside view. As well as lifting the lid on the amateurish politics-by-focus-groups under Ed Miliband, Williamson exposes some of the major events that created and deepened Labour's 'antisemitism crisis' under Jeremy Corbyn. In his mission to set the record straight on numerous misreported events, Williamson names and shames the individuals – on the left and the right – whom he holds responsible for delivering his former party back into the hands of New Labourism under Sir Keir Starmer. To understand the existential crisis facing socialists in Britain today, Williamson's account of recent Labour history is indispensable.

Book Synopsis Local authority investments by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee
Download or read book Local authority investments written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a follow up report to the Committee's June 2009 report looking at the management of local authority investments (HC 164-I, 7th report session 2008-09, ISBN 9780215530660). Under current rules cash deposits and professional advice relating to such monies remain an 'unregulated' activity outside the FSA's remit. The Committee calls on the Government to make the simple legislative change necessary to allow the FSA to regulate the provision of such advice. The FSA must then use these powers to scrutinise both the services provided and the professional independence of companies that offer local authorities 'treasury management' advice.

Book Synopsis Re-licensing by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: ODPM: Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Committee
Download or read book Re-licensing written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: ODPM: Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-03-17 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Licensing Act 2003 brought ten existing licensing schemes administered by local authorities into one new regime, and created more flexible licensing hours. This report concentrates on the technicalities of licensing: all those applying for a licence for the first time or needing a new licence under the Act had to submit applications by a certain date. The transition period was in 2005, and it soon became apparent that people involved in the 're-licensing' process were encountering difficulties. The Committee finds that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has failed to administer the transition period effectively. Despite a two-year gap between the passing of the legislation and the implementation of the Act, regulations and guidance were issued late, and proved to be contradictory and confusing. Local authorities were unable to train staff or prepare application materials in good time. There was inadequate support from central government for local authorities. Many licensing fees rose dramatically, leading to concerns that some small businesses might abandon their licensable activities. The regulatory burden on residents, licensees and local authorities appears to have increased. The government does not appear to recognise some of the issues hindering the smooth operation of the Act. Overly-prescriptive regulations and unhelpful constraints on local government structure are both causing difficulties.
Book Synopsis The Impact of Legislatures by : Philip Norton
Download or read book The Impact of Legislatures written by Philip Norton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of Legislatures brings together key articles and path-breaking scholarship published in The Journal of Legislative Studies during its first 25 years of publication, enabling the reader to make sense of the impact of legislatures in the modern world. Encompassing theory, comparative analysis, and county-based empirical studies, the volume examines the impact of legislatures as the key representative institutions of nations, addressing their relationships both to government and to the people. Legislatures are ubiquitous. They provide legitimacy to measures of public policy and to government. As such, they are key to how a nation is governed. But they do much more than confer legitimacy. They are generally multi-functional and functionally adaptable bodies, and are an essential link between citizen and government. However, scholarship on them has not been extensive and has often been descriptive and country- specific, limiting the capacity to make sense of them as a particular species of institution. The chapters in this volume reflect scholarship that helps the reader appreciate the significance of the place and consequences of legislatures, examining not only the relationship between the legislature and the executive, but also the oft-neglected relationship between legislatures and the people. Reflecting the growing body of research in the field of legislative studies, carried by The Journal of Legislative Studies since its inception in 1995, The Impact of Legislatures is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the impact of legislatures in the world today.
Download or read book Letts Rip! written by Quentin Letts and published by Constable. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the New Labour years - that decade of deceit, that era of wretched wriggle - the Daily Mail's Quentin Letts has maintained a lonely, vehement vigil. Like a lone clay pigeon shot squinting through his sights at a sky black with targets, he has fired his daily bullets at the poseurs and pooh-bahs of British public life. John Prescott? BANG! Alan Sugar? BANG BANG! Peter Mandelson, Harriet Harman, and the Commons Speaker Letts nicknamed 'Gorbals Mick'? Bullseyes - every single one. In this collection of anguished and often snortingly funny political sketches and journalism, Letts lets off more steam than a Chinese laundry. The modern Establishment won't like it. They tried to gag him. Smear him. Even tried to get him fired. Quentin Letts: The man they could not silence. As his wife will be the first to tell you. Praise for Quentin's previous books: 'I salute Mr Letts's one-man stand against the ugly and brainless Bog-Folk.' Daily Mail '[Quentin Letts] discharges his duty with flair and tracer precision...an angry book, beautifully written.' The Spectator

Book Synopsis The Strategic Defence and Security Review by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee
Download or read book The Strategic Defence and Security Review written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 7 July 2009 the Ministry of Defence announced its plan for a Strategic Defence Review to follow the 2010 General Election. The predecessor Defence Committee reported its views on the proposed Review in its fourth report of session 2009-10 (HC 53, ISBN 9780215543912). The current Defence Committee supports the recommendation in that report that the Review be broadened in scope in order to set the country's defence needs in a stronger foreign and security policy context. It is however recognised that the inclusion of broadly defined security concerns within the Review risks the dilution of the defence contribution. Immediate or short-term security issues and threats might dominate the Review to the exclusion of the medium to long-term defence assessments made by the MoD. The Government's need to tackle the deficit is understood yet there is concern at the possible consequences of the MoD's budget not being ring-fenced for the future, unlike those of the DFID and Department of Health. The capacity of the country even to sustain current in-use capabilities and therefore current operations could well be put at risk by the proposed cuts of between 10% and 20%. This report looks at these risks and the specific issues, including those of public consultation and the speed at which the Review process is being undertaken, involved
Book Synopsis Substance Not Spin by : Nick Raynsford
Download or read book Substance Not Spin written by Nick Raynsford and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does policy succeed or fail? In Substance not Spin, Nick Raynsford, a former member of the UK parliament, government minister, and campaigner pulls back the curtain on the front lines of policy making. Drawing on more than forty years of experience working at the very heart of both local and national government and the voluntary sector, Raynsford explores what works and what doesn't in making and implementing policy and legislation. He gives an insider's view on a range of events--some not previously made public--including the botched 1980s reform of housing benefit legislation, the vacuum left by the 1986 abolition of the Greater London Council, the ill-fated 2002 fire and rescue service strike and subsequent reform program, and fitful regeneration in the Thames Gateway in the 2000s. Bringing his investigation up to the current day, he even explores various devolution plans leading to the so-called Northern Powerhouse of the Coalition and now Conservative Government. Offering solutions to obstacles in policy making and implementation and challenging the prevailing public belief that politicians are unable to deliver, Substance not Spin provides a fascinating bridge across the political divide between policy and practice.
