Book Synopsis High Times, An Alien Paradise by : Mark Russell Viliborghi
Download or read book High Times, An Alien Paradise written by Mark Russell Viliborghi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From author Mark Russell Viliborghi’s exceptionally vivid dream comes this fascinating work of fiction that takes you into the interesting place called High Times. As you delve deep into High Times, An Alien Paradise, you’ll find satisfaction, intrigue, romance, revelation, humor, mystery, good times, and insight into the future of humankind. Meet an ensemble of charming characters who will show you the beauty and delight of living and working in High Times. Follow Horn, who narrates this story, as he tells you of how he enjoys waking up everyday to work as a saxophone player in a band at High Times. So what makes High Times that interesting? It is an unusual restaurant-nightclub-bar-dance hall. High Times or HT, as fondly called by its employees, is not the typical place for entertainment and eating. It even has a romantic heated indoor-basement heart-shaped swimming pool. The founders of High Times has built HT mostly to get friends together, especially those who have common interests, in an environment of intimacy where the best of conversation, dance, music, and most of all, good warm feelings can be cultivated and expressed. But is this all there is to it – or is there some mystery and intrigue behind the façade of High Times? Find out in author Mark Russell Viliborghi’s High Times, An Alien Paradise Book Reviews A topsy-turvy psychedelic science-fiction tale—starring an eclectic array of beings, human and otherwise—based on an “exceptionally lucid dream” experienced by author Viliborghi. Viliborghi’s hero is Horn, a musician at a small nightclub called High Times. For Horn, “life is so exciting that [he] can’t wait to see what comes next.” He lives to play music, loves his band mates, is well paid and maintains a nice flat in a nearby post-war apartment building. “Actually,” he explains, “I have accidentally found myself in a million-dollar lifestyle without the responsibilities or stresses. We who work at [High Times] are all riding a train through Shangri-La. I hope it never ends, and I just knew life could be this good.” But not all is how it appears. As Horn soon discovers, there is a mysterious presence in the basement of the apartment complex. “The place gives me that funny feeling,” he says, “the one where you walk backwards out so that you don’t turn your back on whatever is there.” High Times is comprised of two narratives, each carefully intertwined by Viliborghi. The first is the more straightforward—Horn recruits a new female lead singer for his band, and promptly falls in love. The band plays gigs, and earns the respect of the community. Meanwhile, the author delves into the stories of the other denizens of the apartment complex, including a young couple named Jack and Jill. But the book is also a sci-fi adventure, and much of the book is concerned with Horn’s search for life in the basement. High Times appears to be a kind of portal, which connects the nightclub and the apartment complex to a powerful alien being. Viliborghi’s writing often falls flat, but his plotting is solid and the book moves from the early scenes to the surprising, exciting ending with a good deal of ballast. Extraterrestrial happenings make this an intriguing ride. -Kirkus Discoveries
Book Synopsis The Aliens Are Here by : Fraser A. Sherman
Download or read book The Aliens Are Here written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aliens: They have taken the form of immigrants, invaders, lovers, heroes, cute creatures that want our candy or monsters that want our flesh. For more than a century, movies and television shows have speculated about the form and motives of alien life forms. Movies first dipped their toe into the genre in the 1940s with Superman cartoons and the big screen's first story of alien invasion (1945's The Purple Monster Strikes). More aliens landed in the 1950s science fiction movie boom, followed by more television appearances (The Invaders, My Favorite Martian) in the 1960s. Extraterrestrials have been on-screen mainstays ever since. This book examines various types of the on-screen alien visitor story, featuring a liberal array of alien types, designs and motives. Each chapter spotlights a specific film or TV series, offering comparative analyses and detailing the tropes, themes and cliches and how they have evolved over time. Highlighted subjects include Eternals, War of the Worlds, The X-Files, John Carpenter's The Thing and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.

Download or read book The Threat written by David M. Jacobs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After fifty years of widespread speculation about UFOs and abductions by aliens, a distinguished historian and UFO researcher presents the first evidence-based explanation of alien intentions. Based on over thirty years of personal research, Professor Jacobs exposes the aliens' profoundly alarming agenda: to create a breed of alien-human 'hybrids' who will eventually colonise - and control - Earth. He explains why aliens are here, what they want and why their agenda has been kept secret. In doing so he presents a disturbing picture of a profoundly changed future in which humans will be relegated to inferior status. This incredible story is all the more remarkable because every account of an alien abduction is thoroughly documented and is corroborated by independent testimony. This book answers in astonishing depth some of the most important questions about the UFO phenomenon that researchers have been asking since the beginning of the controversy.
Download or read book Alien Sex written by Gerard Loughlin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerard Loughlin is one of the leading theologians working at the interface between religion and contemporary culture. In this exceptional work, he uses cinema and the films it shows to think about the church and the visions of desire it displays. Discusses various films, including the Alien quartet, Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth and Derek Jarman’s The Garden. Draws on a wide range of authors, both ancient and modern, religious and secular, from Plato to Levinas, from Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar to André Bazin and Leo Bersani. Uses cinema to think about the church as an ecclesiacinema, and films to think about sexual desire as erotic dispossession, as a way into the life of God. Written from a radically orthodox Christian perspective, at once both Catholic and critical.

Book Synopsis Hostile Aliens, Hollywood and Today's News by : Melvin E. Matthews
Download or read book Hostile Aliens, Hollywood and Today's News written by Melvin E. Matthews and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1950s Cold War-era monsters meet 21st-century terrorists: Matthews provides a thoughtful interpretation of sci-fi movies that examines the similarities and differences between the political environment and popular culture of two eras. This well-researched examination and appreciation of science fiction films includes behind-the-scenes tales about their production and many quotes from those who produced and starred in the films. The book will tantalize not only fans of the science fiction genre but also sociologists, film historians, and politicians. The author draws parallels between the Cold War fears of the 1950s and 60s and the constant "terrorism alerts" of the September 11th era, exploring how the politics and the psychological climate of the times influences and is reflected in this vehicle of popular culture. This book is the first of its kind, studying the pop culture genre in the wake of the September 11th tragedy. The alien invaders of the 1950s signified a Russian invasion of America, while other films of the genre such as "Invaders from Mars" depicted aliens utilizing mind control to manipulate humans to commit acts of sabotage, signifying Communist enslavement. If such a film were made now, such invaders could be seen as terrorist masterminds using human slaves to commit terrorist acts. "Them!" the 1954 atomic mutation classic, is the spiritual ancestor of the 2002 film "Eight Legged Freaks." Finally, several 1950s films depicted the end of the world at a time when Americans expected a nuclear war with Russia. Godzilla, the only 1950s-era monster to remain a "movie star" beyond that era, can be fashioned to reflect whatever issues dominate the times: nuclear war in the1950s, environmental pollution in the 1970s. Conceivably a Godzilla for the age of terrorism is soon to be released. The immediate pre-September 11th era witnessed films presenting galactic threats to mankind's existence ("Independence Day," "Armageddon," "Deep Impact"), while the early 2000s witnessed the popularity of the "Left Behind" Christian films dramatizing the Tribulation period in the Book of Revelation. It seems that whatever the era and whatever the challenges and crises confronting America, many entertainment themes remain the same, reflecting their respective times and the relevant issues. * Melvin E. Matthews, Jr. is a freelance writer and a horror movie aficionado who has been studying the genre for thirty years. In this work he shares his personal correspondence with film and television star Beverly Garland, and brings together a wealth of detail about the fun and the challenges of the costumes, stunts and special effects, as well as the actors' and producers' thoughts on the meaning behind the stories.
