Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book excerpt: Spanish architect Alberto Campo Baeza has constructed a radical residential property positioned at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. referencing the endless sea that stretches out in front of the dwelling, the project is called?house of the infinite?? a design comprised of a podium crowned with an upper horizontal plane. oriented to face the horizon, the home is envisioned as a jetty built from roman Travertine stone that elegantly complements the sandy beach. VT House, also known as "house of the infinite", was conceived by Campo Baeza first and foremost as a piece of landscape architecture, with its architectural elements sunken underneath.00"We have erected a house as if it were a jetty facing out to sea," said the architect. "On this resoundingly horizontal plane, bare and denuded, we face out to the distant horizon."

Book excerpt: The publication investigates the opportunities for upgrading the spatial structure of apartments created during the post-war building boom between 1960 and 1970. The authors analyze typical existing layouts in the context of social developments which, in recent decades, have led to significant changes in the form of living and in the structure of households. To what extent do the functionally optimized housing units meet the requirements of today’s society, and how adaptable are they to new forms of living? Is it possible to achieve a workable result with small interventions? In the theoretical part the authors discuss theories on design strategies and political transformation processes, the importance of which is demonstrated in the project part using practical contemporary examples.

Book excerpt: The Structure explores the work of Mahendra Raj, India's most significant structural engineer. Examining Raj's sixty prolific years of practice, this volume looks at his unusually inventive and intuitive work and how he has offered pioneering engineering solutions for buildings in exposed concrete. As this book shows, many of his structures can be seen as monuments narrating the history of architecture in post-independence India. The Structure features twenty-eight of Mahendra Raj's buildings in detail through rich photographs and color reproductions of archival plans. Essays are contributed by Raj himself and by the architects Neelkanth Chhaya and Jaimini Mehta. Also included are interviews with Raj by the architect Sanjay Prakash and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, a conversation with the architect BV Doshi, as well as an illustrated complete list of Raj's works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Perriand is one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century interior design. Together with her contemporaries and collaborators Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier, she created many pieces of furniture we now consider classics, including the instantly recognizable LC4 chaise. Her pioneering work with metal was particularly instrumental in paving the way for the machine-age aesthetic popular throughout the 1920s and '30s. The first volume in a planned three-part series, this lavishly book looks at Perriand's early life: her education, her work in photography, her early interest in pre-fab residential architecture, and her years spent working with Le Corbusier at his studio on the Rue de Sèvres in Paris. While most are familiar with Perriand's game-changing design work, the book also documents her less widely known involvement with leftist groups and her desire for social change that drove her to create affordable and appealing furniture for the masses. Influenced by this and her participation in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture, Perriand turned in the 1930s to more inexpensive natural materials like cane and wood. Complete with annotations and a bibliography for further research, Charlotte Perriand offers the first comprehensive book in English on this key figure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a place for architecture beyond neoliberal paradigms? While our era of constant crisis demands stronger social and political engagement, architecture has been largely characterized by a lack of strong positions during the last decades. But more recently, one can again observe attitudes that claim to address architecture and urbanism as more engaged with the social and political effects of global capitalism. Against the liberal 'anything goes' and the revival of architectural autonomy, these attitudes believe less in the possibility for even the most experimental architectural object to have a changing effect on society. Their approaches instead vary from activism to the construction of new critical narratives. But how do these attitudes emancipate themselves from capitalism and to what extent are they able to take into account the complexities of the sociopolitical, economical, ecological, and cultural aspects of the production of space? This book relays a passionate debate between some of the most outstanding theoreticians and eloquent protagonists of this new attitude, leaving us with an overview of such postulated ambitions. A debate with Anne-Julchen Bernhardt, Arno Brandlhuber, Gilles Delalex, Manuel Gausa, Rania Ghosn & El Hadi Jazairy, Adrian Lahoud, Bart Lootsma, Markus Miessen, Can Onaner, Laurent Stalder, Peter Swinnen, Pelin Tan, Milica Topalovic, Stephan Truby, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, and Paola Vigano.

Book excerpt: Swiss architecture is commonly conotated with the names of celebrated architects such as Marion Botta, Peter Zumthor, or Herzog & de Meuron, and with their iconic buildings. Yet there is much more to the topic than, for example, beautiful private houses or spectacular public projects such as museums. This new book looks at the Swiss variety of co-operative housing developments with a special focus on the city of Zurich. Over the past two decades, such developments have changed significantly. Support by public funding and open competitions have helped to design and realise a vast number of highly innovative co-operative projects in Zurich over that period. Many of them can serve as well as models for how to meet the constantly increasing demand for urban housing. 'New Housing in Zurich' is the first comprehensive survey of contemporary co-operative estates in Switzerland's largest city. It features some 50 projects by type, lavishly illustrated with images and plans, thus also providing a typology of multi-unit residential architecture. Essays on the history of co-operative housing in Switzerland, the interplay between co-operatives and the city and their impact on urban development on the larger scale, on new urban and architectural concepts, on co-operatives in the post-industrial age, and on their social dynamics round out the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) remains one of the leading landscape architects ever. The significance of his landscape design lies in his use of abstract shapes that rarely employ symmetry, and his use of tropical, mainly Brazilian, flora. His distinctive and widely acclaimed work has been featured and referenced in numerous sources, yet few of Burle Marx's own words have been published. This book of previously unpublished lectures fills this void. The lectures, delivered on international speaking tours, address topics such as: "The Garden as an Art in Living," "Gardens and Ecology," and "The Problem of Garden Lighting." Their timely publication helps shed light on Burle Marx's distinctive style and ethos of landscape as a way of life.

Book excerpt: Landscape architects Topotek 1 work as commuters across different disciplines, landscape-typologies and scales; the office also jaunts into architecture, urban design and art. The book introduces Topotek 1's most important approaches and methods, and showcases ten significant projects and works in detail, among them The Big Dig in Xi'an, China, Superkilen in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Heerenschürli sports facilities in Zurich, and the Castle Park in Wolfsburg, Germany. Collaboration partners from the fields of architecture, art and design, private and public clients, planners, project managers, and contractors consider the joint undertakings from different angles. This not only allows readers to picture complex realities in the field of landscape architecture, but also to view processes of collaboration. Particular emphasis is placed on the relation between single performance and cooperation, and the crossing of disciplinary and cultural borders. --

Book excerpt: Wherever You Find People' captures the compelling story of the Integrated Centres of Public Education (CIEP) in the Brazilian city and federal state of Rio de Janeiro. This unique but relatively obscure experimental educational project is a prime example of socially driven public architecture and a testament to ambition and forward thinking. The CIEPs were conceived in 1982 by Rio's State Governor Leonel Brizola (1922-2004), the anthropologist, author and politician Darcy Ribeiro (1922-97), and the eminent architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012). Today a network of 508 CIEPs covers the entire state of Rio wherever you find people, you will find a CIEP. This new book is based on extensive interviews with key protagonists and richly illustrated with original sketches and annotated drawings from the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation archive, alongside visuals by Aberrant Architecture. It also features new essays illustrating how architecture can embrace the constraints and conditions of the modern world and engage creatively with the reality of today's social, political, legislative and economic boundaries. 'Wherever You Find People' contributes to a wider architectural discourse about the links between education, design and school building.

Book excerpt: Forty-five contemporary European architects were given the task to design a fictional building expansion in line with the principles of the existing building -- a relevant question in an era when architecture increasingly seems to occur without the context being taken into account. The result is a collection of dialogues between contemporary architects and the past. A new generation of European architects is looking for rooted values rather than indiscriminate forms. Architecture as evolution, rather than revolution. How can the views that underlie the historical city be interwoven with the stories of the present? This question is answered in 45 designs and four essays.

Book excerpt: The Tokyo-based architecture firm Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima, is among the most admired architecture practices of today. Part of a whole generation of Japanese firms that seized the recession of the early 1990s as an opportunity to develop a new design practice in response to changed planning and social conditions, Atelier Bow-Wow is well known for its domestic and cultural architecture, as well as its research exploring micro-architecture. The firm's first studies focused on anonymous Tokyo buildings and highlighted the ways in which they met the requirements of residents and visitors. Additionally, founders Tsukamoto and Kaijima devised a particular type of residential building for Tokyo--a small-scale house that offers an ideal solution to the restrictions of the densely populated megacity. This publication unifies Atelier Bow-Wow's architectural and theoretical work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Visible Origin of Architecture: "I asked architects to send me important images that show the basis of their work. Images that are in their head when they think. Images that show the origin of their architecture. In this book we find 44 individual 'musees imaginaires'. The most unique architects living today each present up to 10 images to explain the autobiographical roots of their oeuvre. The images are explanations, metaphors, foundations, memories and intentions. They are poetic and philosophical avowals. They reveal a personal perspective on thoughts. They show the roots of architecture and expectations concerning projects. Conscious and unconscious. This book has the format of a reader. As little as possible is said. The images are small, legible and interpretable as icons. As individual collections, they present a personal view of an individual world, while as a whole they provide a universal view of the perceptible origin of contemporary architecture." Valerio Olgiati The images submitted to Olgiati are personal, confidential and poetic revelations of the deeper foundations on which the architects' projects are based. The collection acts as a kind of depth gauge of contemporary world architecture. The list comprises the 44 most unique architects living today: David Adjaye, Francisco Aires Mateus, Manuel Aires Mateus, Alejandro Aravena, Ben van Berkel, Mario Botta, Alberto Campo Baeza, Adam Caruso, Peter St John, David Chipperfield, Preston Scott Cohen, Hermann Czech, Roger Diener, Peter Eisenman, Sou Fujimoto, Anton Garcia-Abril, Go Hasegawa, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Steven Holl, Anne Holtrop, Junya Ishigami, Arata Isozaki, Toyo Ito, Bijoy Jain (Studio Mumbai), Momoyo Kaijima, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow-Wow), Christian Kerez, Hans Kollhoff, Winy Maas (MVRDV), Peter Markli, Jurgen Mayer H., Richard Meier, Glenn Murcutt, Ryue Nishizawa, Valerio Olgiati, John Pawson, Cecilia Puga, Smiljan Radic, Richard Rogers, Kazuyo Sejima, Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, Miroslav ik, Alvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Peter Wilson (Bolles + Wilson), Peter Zumthor."
