Indeed, he seemed to think that his present object in life was to keep up the position of the family, - to act by his own fashionable idleness as a sort of set-ofl to that unassuming humility which his sister's industry appeared to imply. And certainly, if a very swellish turn-out, and an extensive variety of light-coloured gloves, and an unlimited con sumption of cigars, as he strolled leisurely through the streets, after hearing the choristers practise, could have done anything in that direction, the Govans would have had a first rate position in Ulphusby - no family in the place better. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alec's Bride, Vol. 1 Perhaps, when little Miss Roda stood on the actual confines of that wonderful thing called society, with but a few months or weeks be tween her and her first ball, and when she be came studiously careful of that rose and 1h complexion which, now, without so much as a thought of its preciousness, she exposed alike to sun, frost and wind, upon the Ulphusby moors; and when she woke up to a proper sense of the exceeding value of that coronal of wavy black hair whose troublesome superfluity of length and thickness she twisted up every morning into a huge shapeless cob at the back of her head. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Bride, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel This Sir Aldrich was one of England's oldest baronets - a noble specimen of what such ought to be: erect, well-proportioned, hand some a'nd commanding. He was the owner of a very magnificent property, whose estates extended through many different counties and various districts of the British Isles. He was master of a magnificent dwelling, and possessor of a pedigree of wondrous length and marvel lous antiquity. Profifers of advancement in rank and peerage promotions had Ofttimes been tendered to his acceptance and that of his ancestors, but, true to the sentiments of their forefathers, no favour or political temptations had power to induce the baronets of ancient name to become the nobles of new and un known cognomen. Book excerpt: Sex and Death in Victorian Literature is a landmark collection of 13 previously unpublished essays on nineteenth-century British poetry, fiction and prose by the most important English and American scholars in the field. The volume observes the subject from an unusually wide variety of viewpoints, including historical, sociological, psychoanalytic, feminist and mythological. There are works central and peripheral to the traditional Victorian canon discussed in Sex and Death; as such the essays present an unprecedented perspective on the shifts and movements of nineteenth-century literature. By grouping the essays under the aegis of sexuality and morality, the volume allows the authors to explore the most important aspects of the works they discuss.

Book excerpt: Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born to a well-to-do family in Providence, Rhode Island. As a child, he revealed remarkable precocity in his early interests in literature and science. Ill-health dogged him in youth, rendering his school attendance sporadic; and in 1908 he experienced a nervous breakdown that rendered him a virtual recluse for several years. In 1914 he discovered the world of amateur journalism and began slowly emerging from his hermitry. He wrote tremendous amounts of essays, poetry, and other work; in 1917, under the encouragement from W. Paul Cook and others, he resumed the writing of horror fiction, and his career as a dream-weaver began anew. In 1921 Lovecraft met his future wife, Sonia H. Greene, at an amateur journalism convention. It was at this time that he began expanding his horizons, both geographical and intellectual: he traveled widely, from New England to New York to Cleveland; and he absorbed such literary and intellectual influences as Lord Dunsany, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Arthur Machen. In 1924 he and Sonia decided to marry, and Lovecraft moved to New York to pursue his literary fortune. But, as the first volume of this biography concludes, his metropolitan adventure would be bittersweet at best. S. T. Joshi's award-winning biography H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996) provided the most detailed portrait of the life, work, and thought of the dreamer from Providence ever published. But that edition was in fact abridged from Joshi's original manuscript, and this expanded and updated two-volume edition restores the 150,000 words that Joshi omitted and, in addition, updates the texts with new findings.

Book excerpt: A FEAST OF FRIGHTFUL FLICKS WAITING TO BE REDISCOVERED As the leading name in the world of horror, Fangoria magazine has been the source of information for fans of fright flicks for more than twenty years—covering feature films, video games, comic books, collectibles, and all aspects of horror entertainment. Working closely with Fangoria’s experts, including Editor in Chief Anthony Timpone, Adam Lukeman has compiled a must-have guide for casual horror fans and hardcore horror junkies with Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Films You’ve Never Seen. With a brief synopsis for each of the included films, lists of cast and crew, “Terror Trivia,” and little-known facts about these lesser-known but must-see gems, Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Films You’ve Never Seen offers a feast of gruesome information. Featured here are flicks that were dumped by their distributors or were initially flops, like Cherry Falls, Manhunter, and Pumpkinhead, foreign winners such as Cronos, The Vanishing, and Funny Games, and straight-to-video sleepers waiting to be discovered, including Shadowbuilder, Jack Be Nimble, and Nomads. There are even surprise entries directed by industry giants—movies like George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead, Brian De Palma’s Sisters, or Dario Argento’s Opera—that are frequently overshadowed by the filmmakers’ other, better-known works but are worthy of further examination. Entertaining and informative, Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen offers more than a hundred reasons to look beyond the often ho-hum Hollywood hype fests . . . when you’re really in the mood to feel your flesh crawl.
