Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.
Book Synopsis Alcohol, Young Persons and Violence by : Paul Williams
Download or read book Alcohol, Young Persons and Violence written by Paul Williams and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is overwhelming evidence of a link between alcohol consumption and violent behaviour. Although not fully understood, it is widely accepted that levels of alcohol consumption and violence are higher among younger than older persons, and particularly so among young males. In 1999, the Australian Institute of Criminology hosted a Roundtable on the theme of Alcohol, Young Persons and Violence. Its purpose was to highlight new empirical data, to explore innovative interventions and to inform the development of a National Alcohol Strategy. This publication gathers together nine papers from that Roundtable as well as others related to the subject of alcohol, young persons and violence. These papers do not attempt to provide a comprehensive description of the extent and nature of the 'problem', nor do they offer a prescriptive policy solution. They do, however, provide examples of recent research and policy opportunities in the area and offer evidence which will contribute to the development of the National Alcohol Strategy.
Book Synopsis Alcohol and Violence by : Robert Nash Parker
Download or read book Alcohol and Violence written by Robert Nash Parker and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have experienced or witnessed situations in which people drinking alcohol get aggressive, obnoxious, and violent. Scientific research has shown evidence of a relationship between alcohol and violence, and even evidence that alcohol plays a role in causing violent and aggressive responses. The book explores a number of aspects of this relationship. If you have been drinking are you more likely to be a victim of crime? If victimized, does drinking alcohol make you more likely to be injured? How does availability of alcohol in the community influence rates of violence among Mexican American youth? Does advertising that links sex and alcohol result in higher rates of sexual assault in Latino neighborhoods? How do elementary school children react to experimentation with drugs, alcohol, and aggression? Do countries outside the United States have alcohol and violence problems, and do these impact men and women differently? We presents original research that shows the depths and conditions under which alcohol and violence are linked, further strengthening the evidence that alcohol use and availability is an important factor in violence in our cities, neighborhoods, school, and homes. The good news is that we regulate alcohol use and availability effectively, with a body of established laws and procedures. We can, therefore, find ways using this existing system to develop new ways to prevent the alcohol related violence studied here. The second half of the book begins this task by laying out the principles of environmental prevention, a strategy that has been very successful in a number of health and safety related domains. The next four chapters show just how environmental prevention strategies have worked, and worked very effectively, to lower rates of violence by reducing alcohol availability and alcohol consumption. The research reported here shows communities different approaches and mechanisms to achieve reductions in violence, and they provide a road map for communities everywhere to follow suit and reduce alcohol related violence. Reducing violence can be accomplished, everyone can do it if they work together, and the result is a safer and better society.

Book Synopsis Young Adult Drinking Styles by : Dominic Conroy
Download or read book Young Adult Drinking Styles written by Dominic Conroy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together cutting-edge contemporary research and discussion concerning drinking practices among young adults (individuals aged approximately 18-30 years old). Its chapters showcase an interdisciplinary range of perspectives from psychology, sociology, criminology, geography, public health and social policy. The contributors address themes including how identity becomes involved in young adult drinking practices; issues relating to the non-consumption of alcohol within friendship groups; and the role of social context, religious and ethnic orientation, gender identity, and social media use. In doing so, they highlight changing trends in alcohol consumption among young people, which have seen notably fewer young adults consuming alcohol over the last two decades. In acknowledging the complex nature of drinking styles among young adults, the contributors to this collection eschew traditional understandings of young adult drinking which can pathologise and generalise. They advocate instead for an inclusive approach, as demonstrated in the wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, cultural perspectives, methods and international settings represented in this book, in order to better understand the economic, socio-cultural and pharmacological crossroads at which we now stand. This book will appeal in particular to researchers, theorists, practitioners and policy makers working in the alcohol and drugs field, public health and health psychology, in addition to students and researchers from across the social sciences.

Considered a rite of passage, teenage drinking has skyrocketed to epidemic proportions, fostering a generation of young adults whose lives are already beginning to come apart under the strain. This book, written from the viewpoints of both mother and son, is a riveting, enlightening, and heartbreakingly true story of a family that was able to confront the fear, pain, and denial that threatened to destroy them—and survive the epidemic of teenage drinking that’s putting America’s future at risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of alcohol-related disorder, whether hooliganism, aggression or violence, seems to be both a perennial and a worsening problem. This balanced study goes beyond the dramatic and not always accurate media accounts of the problem to present a comprehensive analysis of the factors behind and consequences of adolescent drinking. That a problem exists is not in doubt, but what exactly do we mean when we talk about alcohol-related aggression and violence? Is it a new phenomenon? Why do young people drink/and or get into trouble? What harm does alcohol do to the health of young people whether their behaviour is anti-social or not? Is there a link between alcohol and other, illegal, drugs? What can be done to tackle the problem at a personal and at an organizational level? The authors of this accessible and informative account address some of the key issues surrounding alcohol and aggression with particular reference to adolescence. Drawing on the latest research evidence, with a minimum of psychological or sociological jargon, this book will be essential reading for all professionals working with adolescents, sociologists and concerned parents.

Book Synopsis Alcohol Use Among Adolescents by : Michael Windle
Download or read book Alcohol Use Among Adolescents written by Michael Windle and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1999-06-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent alcohol use is prominent among today′s teens and has elicited rising concerns among parents, health practitioners, social policymakers, and the public at large. Yet there is an absence of a relatively concise book that summarizes and integrates existing knowledge on the various facets of adolescent alcohol use. This book attempts to fill this void by integrating research from the multiple fields of study (e.g., prevalence of use), describing measurement approaches (e.g., survey and clinical diagnostic), reviewing risk and protective factors, reporting on findings from prominent prevention and treatment studies, and suggesting future research directions. The coverage is intended to examine issues relevant to etiology, developmental courses, and prevention and treatment, as well as to identify future research directions.
