Book excerpt: Data from epidemiologic studies within recent decades demonstrate that death rates from coronary heart disease are lower among consumers of small to moderate amounts of alcohol than among non-drinkers. Some of the proposed mechanisms for the beneficial health effects of moderate alcohol consumtion are: alcohol lowers harmful LDL-cholesterol levels; alcohol raises protective HDL-cholesterol levels; alcohol decreases formation of blood clots in the arteries; alcohol increases coronary blood flow; alcohol increases estrogen levels. This report presents the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption so the general public can make informed decisions.

Book excerpt: The Director of this study, Abraham Kagan, has comprehensively summarized the design and main finndings of the study in this book. The Honolulu Heart Program compared and contrasted ethnic Japanese men living in different cultural environments--Honolulu and mainland Japan--assessed their relative risk factors. The study supported many of the existing views on risk factors but also showed suprising trends. One of the trends shows moderate alcohol consumption is a preventative factor. In recent years the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases have become common knowledge. The recently completed Honolulu Heart Program is the largest targeted study to evaluate scientifically such risk factors.

Book excerpt: During the last 25 years, life expectancy at age 50 in the United States has been rising, but at a slower pace than in many other high-income countries, such as Japan and Australia. This difference is particularly notable given that the United States spends more on health care than any other nation. Concerned about this divergence, the National Institute on Aging asked the National Research Council to examine evidence on its possible causes. According to Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries, the nation's history of heavy smoking is a major reason why lifespans in the United States fall short of those in many other high-income nations. Evidence suggests that current obesity levels play a substantial part as well. The book reports that lack of universal access to health care in the U.S. also has increased mortality and reduced life expectancy, though this is a less significant factor for those over age 65 because of Medicare access. For the main causes of death at older ages-cancer and cardiovascular disease-available indicators do not suggest that the U.S. health care system is failing to prevent deaths that would be averted elsewhere. In fact, cancer detection and survival appear to be better in the U.S. than in most other high-income nations, and survival rates following a heart attack also are favorable. Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries identifies many gaps in research. For instance, while lung cancer deaths are a reliable marker of the damage from smoking, no clear-cut marker exists for obesity, physical inactivity, social integration, or other risks considered in this book. Moreover, evaluation of these risk factors is based on observational studies, which-unlike randomized controlled trials-are subject to many biases.

Book excerpt: In 1950 men and women in the United States had a combined life expectancy of 68.9 years, the 12th highest life expectancy at birth in the world. Today, life expectancy is up to 79.2 years, yet the country is now 28th on the list, behind the United Kingdom, Korea, Canada, and France, among others. The United States does have higher rates of infant mortality and violent deaths than in other developed countries, but these factors do not fully account for the country's relatively poor ranking in life expectancy. International Differences in Mortality at Older Ages: Dimensions and Sources examines patterns in international differences in life expectancy above age 50 and assesses the evidence and arguments that have been advanced to explain the poor position of the United States relative to other countries. The papers in this deeply researched volume identify gaps in measurement, data, theory, and research design and pinpoint areas for future high-priority research in this area. In addition to examining the differences in mortality around the world, the papers in International Differences in Mortality at Older Ages look at health factors and life-style choices commonly believed to contribute to the observed international differences in life expectancy. They also identify strategic opportunities for health-related interventions. This book offers a wide variety of disciplinary and scholarly perspectives to the study of mortality, and it offers in-depth analyses that can serve health professionals, policy makers, statisticians, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health expectancies were developed to address the important question of whether or not we are exchanging longer life for poorer health - replacing quality by quantity. Health expectancies extend the concept of life expectancy to morbidity and disability by providing a means of dividing life expectancy into life spent in various states of good and bad health. Being independent of the size of populations and of their age structure, health expectancies thus allow direct comparison of the different groups that constitute populations: sexes, socio-professional categories, regions. This book brings together for the first time, the major works of REVES* over the past ten years. As well as providing comparisons of the health of many of the world's countries, the book includes sections on the concepts behind health expectancies and the demographic transition, the relevance of health expectancies to health policy and the different methods of calculating health expectancies. *REVES is an international organisation of researchers, clinicians and health planners addressing these issues as well as developing and recommending methods of calculation and furthering the use of health expectancy as a tool for health planning. * State-of-the-art coverage of this important health indicator * Heavily cross referenced to give the book structure and coherence * Editors are pioneers in the field of health expectancy

Book excerpt: With the right lifestyle, experts say, chances are that you may live up to a decade longer. What's the prescription for success? National Geographic Explorer Dan Buettner has traveled the globe to uncover the best strategies for longevity found in the Blue Zones: places in the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives. And in this dynamic book he discloses the recipe, blending this unique lifestyle formula with the latest scientific findings to inspire easy, lasting change that may add years to your life. Buettner's colossal research effort has taken him from Costa Rica to Italy to Japan and beyond. In the societies he visits, it's no coincidence that the way people interact with each other, shed stress, nourish their bodies, and view their world yields more good years of life. You'll meet a 94-year-old farmer and self-confessed "ladies man" in Costa Rica, an 102-year-old grandmother in Okinawa, a 102-year-old Sardinian who hikes at least six miles a day, and others. By observing their lifestyles, Buettner's teams have identified critical everyday choices that correspond with the cutting edge of longevity research and distilled them into a few simple but powerful habits that anyone can embrace
