Book Synopsis A Study of Chinese Alchemy by : Obed Simon Johnson
Download or read book A Study of Chinese Alchemy written by Obed Simon Johnson and published by Martino Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint. Paperback.156p. In China as elsewhere, alchemy is a doctrine aiming to afford an understanding of the principles underlying the formation and functioning of the cosmos. The alchemist overcomes the limits of individuality, and ascends to higher states of being; he becomes, in Chinese terms, a zhenren or Authentic Man. Chinese alchemy went through a complex and not yet entirely understood development along its twenty centuries of documented history. The two main traditions are conventionally known as waidan or "external alchemy" and neidan or "internal alchemy". The bulk of the Chinese alchemical sources is found in the Daozang (Taoist Canon), the largest collection of Taoist texts. The cosmos as we know it is conceived of as the final stage in a series of spontaneous transmutations stemming from original non-existence. This process entails the apparent separation of primeval Unity into the two complementary principles, yin and yang. Their re-union generates the cosmos. When the process is completed, the cosmos is subject to the laws of cosmology. The alchemist's task is to retrace this process backwards. Alchemy, whether "external" or "internal," providessupport to the adept, leading one to the point when, as some texts put it, "Heaven spontaneously reveals its secrets." Its practice must be performed under the close supervision of a master, who provides the "oral instructions" (koujue) necessary to an understanding of the processes that the adept performs with minerals and metals, or undergoes within himself. Modern study of the alchemical literature began in the present century, after the Canon was reprinted and made widely available in 1926. Johnson's work, originally published in 1928, remains one of the full book length treatises in English on the subject.
Book Synopsis The Secrets of Alchemy by : Lawrence Principe
Download or read book The Secrets of Alchemy written by Lawrence Principe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy, the Noble Art, conjures up scenes of mysterious, dimly lit laboratories populated with bearded old men stirring cauldrons. Though the history of alchemy is intricately linked to the history of chemistry, alchemy has nonetheless often been dismissed as the realm of myth and magic, or fraud and pseudoscience. And while its themes and ideas persist in some expected and unexpected places, from the Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's) Stone of Harry Potter to the self-help mantra of transformation, there has not been a serious, accessible, and up-to-date look at the complete history and influence of alchemy until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The purpose of this book is to release one particular secret, which has been kept hidden for the last 12,000 years. The Philosophers' Stone, Elixir of Life, Fountain of Youth, Ambrosia, Soma, Amrita, Nectar of Immortality. These are different names for the same thing. Throughout history this secret has been used by a very few to extend their lives hundreds of years in perfect health, with access to unlimited wealth, among many other miraculous properties. Some kept the secret because they understood that the time was not right for the secret to be free for all people, but most kept the secret out of their own jealousy, ignorance, egotism and corruption. The Stone's history and the history of the human race up until this day is a strange story full of secret societies, hooded cloaks, and mystical symbols. Such theatrics are childish and shallow. It's pointless to look for the light in the shadows...;"
Book Synopsis Alchemy Unveiled by : Jean Baptiste van Helmont
Download or read book Alchemy Unveiled written by Jean Baptiste van Helmont and published by Merkur Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 1997-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy is the last and highest knowledge which can be committed to paper in the form of letters. Beyond that, another language is required, one which cannot be committed to paper. Most people confuse iatrochemistry with Alchemy. When an Alchemist speaks of Mercury, Sulphur and Salt, he speaks of his spiritual, astral and physical bodies, not of the elements. Alchemy Unveiled describes the tribulations that a human being has to pass through in order to purify these three bodies. However, to achieve the level of an Alchemist requires daily study and strict daily mental, astral and physical exercises for many lifetimes. Many individuals have already achieved this goal. The purpose is not to convert a lower metal into gold, but to change an impure body into a pure body, namely the spirit, soul and physical bodies. An Alchemist is one who has passed the levels of a magician, spheric magician and Kabbalist. All these levels can be achieved without the help of a teacher! . These Western writings are by those who have reached levels higher than an Alchemist. They have given us these writings, philosophically and practically. These sciences cannot be learned intellectually, but have to be approached with a clean heart. One's character has to be completely free of all negative characteristics. And for the one who embarks on this journey, the first thing to be learned is what a positive characteristic is and what a negative characteristic is. And the reader will be surprised what negative characteristics are, because many of these characteristics are considered by most as positive. Alchemy Unveiled will lead the reader on a journey of a complete purification of the body, soul and spirit, and for the first time the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone is openly explained. Much has been written about this subject, most of which is and remains incomprehensible for most. Many of the alchemical writings available were and are based on error and point the way to the wrong path. This is mainly due to the fact that many individuals do this for personal, material gain. Alchemy Unveiled begins with an explicit explanation of the symbolic language of Alchemy, which is a must for any further clear understanding of the entire text of this book. It explains the errors of many who were not in possession of the true knowledge regarding this art. It takes the reader on a journey through the ancient mysteries of Initiation, the Osiris mysteries, the Eleusian Mysteries, the Mysteries of Israel, the Christ-Mysterium and the Mystery of Alchemy.
Book Synopsis Alchemy, Its Science and Romance (Classic Reprint) by : John Edward Mercer
Download or read book Alchemy, Its Science and Romance (Classic Reprint) written by John Edward Mercer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Anglican bishop, clergyman, and social reformer, John Edward Mercer was also thoroughly interested in the art of alchemy, or the ability to transform base metals (such as iron) into noble metals (like gold). This transformation of matter was considered the height of an alchemist's achievements during Mediaeval times, and many scientists spent their entire lives chasing the elusive dream of alchemy. Mercer's book, Alchemy, Its and Romance describes the allure and danger of the pursuit of this knowledge of the Gods. Predictably, the wanton pursuit or wealth and fame often had negative consequences (as such things often do) and more than one great man found himself cast out of society and into the gutter as a result of his obsession with alchemy. Mercer explorers the world of alchemy by examining the many legends that men found tempting and offering a sound comparison between alchemy and magic. Later in the text, he details the means through which alchemy gained legitimacy by crossing from the purview of the magician to that of the Chemist. Finally, Mercer highlights the romance surrounding the legendary Philosopher's Stone which could turn any metal into gold and grant immortality to the man who had it in his possession. Alchemy, Its Science and Romance is comprehensive account of the power of legend and the cultural significance that a singular pursuit can have even over the course of millennia. An incredible read from start to finish, this book is great for anyone interested in folklore, history, alchemy, magic, chemistry, or the power of myth.
