Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Today This is a book for persons who believe that life in a new environment may offer more opportunity than their present one. Alaska unquestionably is a land of opportunity for people of initiative and energy for the simple reason that in Alaska the proportion of area and resources to population is greater than in any other division of the United States. Proof of this is found in these pages. Specific illustrations of successful careers are given in Chapter 24, "Who's Who in Alaska." In studying these biographical sketches, the reader will readily perceive that so-called pioneer life in America's last frontier is merely active participation in recognized pursuits common to any industrial, agricultural, or urban community in the States. Evidence of a new and stronger economy in Alaska is indicated by the initiative and activity of its residents in many phases of economic life, such as ground and air transportation, enlarged tourist facilities, and the lumber industry. These are all favorable signs, pointing to the day when Alaska's economy will be controlled by its permanent residents with lessening control by "outside" interests and capital. Alaska is a good place, a country of opportunity for anyone willing to work wholeheartedly for the development of the land of his choice. I want the sweep of wide, triumphant wings; The halleluiah that the ocean sings; The wind that roars like beasts and never tires! Great God, my soul aches to the mighty lgres Of Nature To men heritaged as kings Who dare, aspire, achieve, not counting cost, So that a deed be done that reaches far A new land won; a perilous water crossed; So that a man coming to his last rest Shall wear upon his brow the splendid star That leads the glorious empire - builders West! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska, an Empire in the Making The information contained in this book was gathered during an almost continuous residence of fourteen years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Much of this time, it is true, was spent in fishing, hunting, exploring, mining, and various ways other than the acquisition of data. But what has been written is as accurate as it is humanly possible to make it. The writer's notes and observations have been checked up with government reports and other official documents, and the works of Alfred H. Brooks, Chief of the Geological Survey in Alaska, Skidmore's "History of Sitka," Dall's "Resources of Alaska," Senator Sumner's speech on the resources of Alaska, and various documents in the state, treasury and other departments of the government have been freely consulted. It is hoped that it will serve not only as a guide for tourists and sightseers who visit the Northern wonderland, but also that it may contain matters of interest to the stock raiser, the farmer, the miner, the prospector, the investor, and those who may go to Alaska for purposes other than sight-seeing. A few of the photographs herein reproduced were taken by the writer, but the majority of them represent the work of several professional photographers situated in different parts of the Northland. 'every incident is actual history, and even the names are real. The dog story is also con scientiously true history, and belongs to one of the minor gold stampedes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and Its Resources The purpose of this volume has been to comprise in a small compass the most valuable part of the present knowledge of Alaska. The writer has specially endeavored to convey as much information as his scope would allow, in regard to the native inhabitants, history, and resources of the country. This end has been kept steadily in view, perhaps at the risk of dulness. The greatest care has been taken to verify such facts as have not come under the personal observation of the writer. Toward this end every accessible work containing information in regard to the country has been consulted in the original. Where authorities have differed, the statements thought most worthy of confidence, or such as best agreed with the experience of the author, have been adopted. Many discrepancies have been reconciled, and not a few errors have been corrected. Mistakes to a certain extent are inevitable, but it is hoped that, in all important points, the statements herein made will stand the test of time and future observation. Many of the conclusions in regard to the natives may seem, to the superficial observer, unwarranted; indeed, the author found, during a second year's experience, that not a few of his earlier impressions were erroneous, and constant intercourse with the natives, during that year while isolated from other white men, enabled him to clear up many doubtful points which previous observations had left unsettled. The geographical information here recorded is, of necessity, partly approximate. With a base upon which to found future observations, it is to be hoped that accurate determination of many points will not long be delayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peerless Alaska Our Cache Near the Pole To The Public: As the founder of American churches, schools and civil government in Alaska, and for thirty-one years an active worker in its development, I take pleasure in calling public attention to the excellence, reliability and completeness of this book of Mr. Hallock, so aptly indicated by its sub-title as "Our Cache Near the Pole." Alaska is a country of which the half has not been told or even surmised. To write so that the reader can see and in some measure comprehend what it is like requires an author of special gift, and this Mr. Hallock has. As a naturalist and sportsman, he has been trained to close observation. As a scientist, he defines, adapts and applies. As an editor for fifty-five years in and out, he has had long practice in the art of putting things. He appeals irresistibly to one's sense of appreciation. Furthermore, as the author of half a dozen popular books on natural history and sport, and a purveyor for many years to lovers of outdoor life through the "Forest and Stream," which he founded, he knows how to diagnose the public mind and prescribe just what it wants and needs to know. And the results of all this professional training and experience and investigation are admirably and opportunely presented in this last work of his, which same guarantees to the reader pleasure, accuracy and instruction. Two trips, covering a period of eighteen months and a distance of over twelve thousand miles were made practically alone. In answer to the oft-repeated question of why I went to Alaska I can only give the same reply that so many others give: I wanted to go in search of my fortune which had been successfully eluding my grasp for a good many years. Neither home nor children claimed my attention. No good reason, I thought, stood in the way of my going to Alaska; for my husband, traveling constantly at his work had long ago allowed me carte blanche as to my inclinations and movements. To be sure, there was no money in the bank upon which to draw, and an account with certain friends whose kindness and generosity cannot be forgotten, was opened up to pay passage money; but so far neither they nor I have regretted making the venture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Alaska: Its Resources, Products, and Attractions Forty years have passed since the foresight and negotiations of a great statesman, William H. Seward, added to our national domain the immense and valuable Territory of Alaska. It has contributed to our public wealth products worth more than three hundred millions of dollars, yet to this day it is a terra incognita to the American public. Not only is the ordinary man of affairs ignorant of the general features of Alaska, but this is also true of the usually well-informed. Indeed, in a widely circulated and standard work of geographic reference the errors relative to the Territory are simply astounding in number as well as in character. The great economic value of the more northern parts of North America is being gradually recognized, as indicated by the rapidly increasing wealth of north western Canada, and by the construction of the trans continental Grand Trunk Railway with its terminus at the southeastern boundary of Alaska. For the first time an organized effort has been made to draw public attention to the products and resources of Alaska, through their adequate and material presentation in the Alaska-Yukon Exposition at Seattle. The need has long been obvious of a Handbook that should assemble widely scattered and reliable Alaskan data of current interest. Book excerpt: This classic is an original work of literature by one of America's foremost conservationists and is an account of the people of the north, both Native and white, who give Alaska its special human flavor. First published over fifty years ago, the book is still a favorite among old-time Alaskans and, over the years, has prompted numerous readers to pack up and move to Alaska. The richness of statistical coverage in this book, and Marshall's careful descriptions of the characters he met, provide readers with a window to the world of 1930 and a nearly complete record of the Koyukuk civilization as he saw it. Readers learn what the people of Wiseman thought about sex, religion, politics, and the myriad of ways they found to cope with and enjoy life in a wilderness community.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Nuggets Throughout the ages which have elapsed since the first man was banished from the Garden of Eden, the wanderlust has lured both men and women to the far corners of the earth in quest of something new and strange. The lure of the glittering metal called gold and the desire for unbridled freedom have caused man and also woman to leave behind the comforts of civilization to journey over the "unblazed trails" which lead through the "open places" of the big "out-doors." These men and women are known as Pioneers and it is to them and the children of them that the credit should go for the blazing of trails into unknown lands. The Pioneers of Alaska, those men and women who prospected the remote places of the Territory, where they established camps that have since become thriving towns and cities, deserve the lion's share of the credit for the development of Alaska. These hardy, sincere men and women have builded a lasting foundation on which those who follow in their footsteps can erect permanent homes, and in the years to come the "Chechaco" who journeys to Alaska, will find all of those things that are to be found at the present time in the highly civilized communities throughout the world. Alaska, now an infant in swaddling clothes will soon learn to walk. Her footsteps will be guided by the sons and daughters of the men and women who blazed the trails to the far camps, and as she grows she will take her rightful place among the other states of the union, and her people will have a voice in the councils of the Nation. The verses in this little volume are not literary gems such as the famous poets have written; they are simply a collection of typical Alaskan life and have been written with the sincere desire to portray Alaska and the people of Alaska as they really are. I am confident that those people who know Alaska will see the real in all the lines. I am also certain that those people who have yet to know the real Alaska will be greatly assisted in the lesson they must learn before they can know it, by reading these humble lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Its History, Climate Natural Resources The brief history of the discovery and occupa tion of Alaska byxthe Russians, which I have inr corporate'd in this work, has been compiled largely from the records of the russian-ameri can Company, as translated for me by Mr.' George Kostrometinoff. That part relating to the purchase of the country by the United States are matters of Congressional record, which the reader can easily verify by referring to the de bates had in the Senate and House of Represent atives, 1867 8. The remainder, and by far the larger part of the volume, is based upon personal observation and research, made during an official residence of severalyears in the Territory, during which time I personally visited all the different sections referred to for the special purpose of in vestigation and report. Concerning my estimate of the natural resources of these different sec tions, I am wholly content to await the confirma tion that certainly lies withinthe near future. F. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Klondike When the special subcommittee of the Senate Com mittee on Territories visited Alaska in the summer of 1903 for the purpose of gathering information which would enable them to legislate wisely and helpfully with regard to that great district, I was fortunate enough to obtain permission to accompany the senatorial party in an unofficial capacity. The trip occupied, approximately, ten weeks, and carried us not only through the interior, along the whole course of the Yukon River, but to many places on the coast and among the islands not readily accessible by the regular means of travel. As will be readily under stood, enjoyed peculiarly favourable opportunities to study the resources and the possibilities of the country, and the following pages on Alaska, in their original form, were written for my paper after my return home, and published in it exclusively. There appears to be a demand for reliable and up-to-date information about that coun try - that, and the urgent request of men who have read what I have written, and who know Alaska, that it be given permanent and convenient form, are the excuses for this volume. For this purpose the original story of Alaska has been carefully revised and the statistical information brought down to include the commercial and industrial operations of the year 1904.
