Divided into three overarching sections—art, culture, and humanities; law, economy, and politics; and environment, people, and place—Alaska at 50 is written in highly accessible prose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Its History, Climate Natural Resources The brief history of the discovery and occupation of Alaska by the Russians, which I have incorporated in this work, has been compiled largely from the records of the Russian-American Company, as translated for me by Mr. George Kostrometinoff. That part relating to the purchase of the country by the United States are matters of Congressional record, which the reader can easily verify by referring to the debates had in the Senate and House of Representatives, 1867-8. The remainder, and by far the larger part of the volume, is based upon personal observation and research, made during an official residence of several years in the Territory, during which time I personally visited all the different sections referred to for the special purpose of investigation and report. Concerning my estimate of the natural resources of these different sections, I am wholly content to await the confirmation that certainly lies within the near future. Book Synopsis Alaska's Changing Arctic by : John E. Hobbie
Download or read book Alaska's Changing Arctic written by John E. Hobbie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edition of the Long Term Ecological Research Network series, editors John Hobbie and George Kling and 58 co-authors synthesize the findings from the NSF-funded Arctic LTER project based at Toolik Lake, Alaska, a site that has been active since the mid-1970s. The book presents research on the core issues of climate-change science in the treeless arctic region of Alaska. As a whole, it examines both terrestrial and freshwater-aquatic ecosystems, and their three typical habitats: tundra, streams, and lakes. The book provides a history of the Toolik Lake LTER site, and discusses its present condition and future outlook. It features contributions from top scientists from many fields, creating a multidisciplinary survey of the Alaskan arctic ecosystem. Chapter topics include glacial history, climatology, land-water interactions, mercury found in the Alaskan arctic, and the response of these habitats to environmental change. The final chapter predicts the consequences that arctic Alaska faces due to global warming and climate change, and discusses the future ecology of the LTER site in the region. Alaska's Changing Arctic is the definitive scientific survey of the past, present, and future of the ecology of the Alaskan arctic.

Book Synopsis Preserving Reflections of Ourselves by :
Download or read book Preserving Reflections of Ourselves written by and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While museums are very good at collecting, preserving, documenting, and interpreting the histories of our communities, we have not done a very good job with our own histories. No comprehensive publication holistically examines the development of museums in Alaska, let alone looks critically at the “big three” (Alaska State Museums, University of Alaska Museum of the North, and the Anchorage Museum) with a goal of establishing a connection between the historical context, the individuals who shaped those museums, and the institutions’ current states of being. This dissertation uses the academic fields of history, museology, and ethnography to discover and analyze how we find ourselves in the current state, while offering suggestions for moving ahead in a positive way. In this dissertation I examine the past, present, and future of Alaska’s museums. I do this by first assembling a more complete history of the “big three” using archival primary sources, published literature, and interviews. Second, I examine the current state of museums with their strengths and challenges through a combination of literature review, interviews, surveys, and participant observation. Finally, I consider the way Alaska’s museums might respond to the changes facing museums around the world by reflecting on current museological literature, current events, and examining two case studies based on my work at the University of Alaska Museum of the North located on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
