Book excerpt: The first in an enchanting new contemporary romance series featuring rugged Alaskan pilots who are about to meet their match from New York Times bestselling author Barbara Dunlop. Supermodel Mia Westberg has found herself under the scrutiny of the paparazzi after her much older husband dies and leaves her his fashion house. In order to stay out of the public eye, she packs her things and leaves Los Angeles, escaping to visit her cousin Raven, a shipping expeditor working in a remote part of Alaska—where Mia is sure the tabloids won't follow. But she isn't ready for everything Paradise, Alaska throws at her: the wild animals, insanely harsh weather, and a certain no-nonsense bush pilot. When pilot Silas Burke flies a beautiful blonde into town, it doesn't take him long to figure her out. She's a spoiled, entitled city girl who has zero business in the rough terrain of Alaska, where the storms are as unforgiving as the dangerous wildlife. After seeing her struggle, and against his better judgment, he helps her acclimate to life in Paradise. But he’s an impatient teacher and she’s a frustrated pupil—and nothing gets them fired up more than each other. Can these two polar opposites find common ground and possibly something more?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Price of Paradise is a must-read for anyone who enjoys Alaskan adventure. From a childhood dream to the boreal forest, the author sets forth an unforgettable memoir of adventure and perseverance. You will feel the emotion of his successes and the pain of his failures. You will hear the howl of the wolves and shiver in the cold. You will shake your head in disbelief. You may laugh and cry, but most of all, you will know the freedom he found. My first experience with Mark and Ken was during the winter of 1982. I was flying around looking for wolves, when I came on a myriad of snowshoe trails. These trails went in every direction and covered a fairly large area. “Now, who in the world would do that?” I wondered. I met Mark the following winter when he stopped by our airstrip looking to fly over his trapping area. A friendship was born that day, which now spans over 35 years. Whether on the trapline or out hunting, we have shared some great adventures and made a lot of good memories. Mark has set forth his memories of a lifetime on the trail within the pages of this book. With his gift for story-telling, there's no doubt it will be a memorable read. Chuck McMaha-Gakona Guide Service: A legend of the Last Frontier in his own right, Mark had the best of two worlds. He spent 34 years (1988-2021) working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game every summer, then hunting and trapping his way through the rest of the year. As a colleague and friend for the last 20 years, I can assure you that several lifetimes of riveting outdoor adventures lie between the covers of this book. I don't know if Mark had an affinity for bizarre and unusual outdoor experiences, or if those experiences had an affinity for him. No doubt, Mark's harrowing adventures, coupled with his story-telling skills, are rivaled by few. Corey Schwanke-Fisherman and Fisheries Biologist.

Book excerpt: One Year in Alaska is a unique and peerless guide for traditional living in the Alaskan woods and will provide a wealth of valuable information for all who have dreamed of that life. It is a useful survival and tip guide for the vacationing outdoor hobbyist and the serious adventurer alike. It is substantive enough to save your life if stranded alone in the wild (although that is not its main purpose) and lighthearted enough to be a tour guide to the Alaskan out-of-doors. The information and instruction provided here is timeless and not dependent upon modern day technology although it does make use of certain practical conveniences that have come into existence since the Gold Rush days such as the chainsaw, Deet bug repellant, nylon tarps and visqueen, outboard motors, etc.... But nearly all the gear, food and techniques are indistinguishable from the forms used a hundred, and in some cases, even a thousand, years ago; not "For old Fashions Sake" rather because they proved to be un-improvable. To my mind nothing captures and conveys the spirit of the frontier in the bush more perfectly than an old school flat bottom riverboat, loaded to the thwarts, pushed by a small motor. No wheel or console just you and a tiller against the wind. Add some rain and a 600 mile two week journey ahead of you and you are as close to the old world as you will ever be. The spirit of Old Alaska can't be found in a particular place simply by being there, rather it is a state of mind and a particular set of values and beliefs. It is a way of seeing things, not a way of dressing or intentionally depriving yourself of pleasure and conveniences. It's about minimizing your attachment and dependence upon the outside world and maximizing your self-sufficiency while being as comfortable as you can make yourself with simple things. It's not about self-denial - far from it - it's more about a form of self-indulgence and pursuing a certain kind of happiness: to live a life that nurtures a part of the soul that longs for independence and personal liberty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it first rolled off the presses in 1856, The Honolulu Advertiser has been an important force in reporting and shaping the news of Honolulu and, secondarily, the Hawaiian Islands. Established as The Pacific Commercial Advertiser, a four-page weekly, it was the first enduring non-government owned or subsidized newspaper published in the Hawaiian Kingdom. Under its first owner, the son of New England missionaries, the Advertiser became the most successful commercial English language newspaper in the Islands. The paper became a daily in 1882 and in 1921 changed its name to The Honolulu Advertiser. Now owned by Gannett Company, Inc., the Advertiser is one of the oldest newspapers still operating west of the Rockies. George Chaplin, editor-in-chief of the Advertiser from 1959 to 1986, has written a colorful and entertaining insider's account of nearly a century and a half of Advertiser history. He covers the legion of personalities that has worked for the Advertiser over the years: owners (from its first Island owner, Henry Whitney, to its last, the Thurston Twigg-Smith family), publishers, editors, reporters, political cartoonists, photographers, and pressroom people. He reports on issues and historical events that had a powerful impact on the Honolulu community and comments on the newspaper's position regarding each: the sensational Massie trial, the dilemma of Hawaii's Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II, the labor movement and communism in the Islands, and statehood, among others. He also recalls the many political figures who have waged their media battles within the pages of the Advertiser.Presstime in Paradise is an illuminating and informative look at the internal operations of a newspaper and its relationship with a community that has both influenced it and been influenced by it. It adds significantly to the growing body of literature on the role of the free press in Hawaii.

Book excerpt: A woman bush pilot in Alaska finds love where she least expects it in this new novel from New York Times bestselling author Barbara Dunlop. Hailey Barosse always knew what her wealthy family expected of her: marry an affluent Georgia man, run a charitable organization, and provide her parents with two or three grandchildren. But Hailey rebelled. Instead, she moved far away from that suffocating life, and for six years she’s built her independence by flying bush planes in the tiny town of Paradise, Alaska. Then a suave, handsome businessman arrives, shaking up her world and reminding her of her controlling family. Parker Hall wants to invest in her boss’s airline, but Hailey doesn’t trust him at all. He might be confident and charming, but she knows all about self-centered cutthroat industrialists—and Parker is one of them. Parker Hall prides himself on being a self-made entrepreneur. He earned his fortune by working day and night, expanding his gold mine and investing in new businesses that support his growing dream. His next opportunity is in Paradise, but his plans are quickly derailed by a fierce, beautiful pilot who both fights and fascinates him. The closer he gets to the feisty Hailey, the more she pushes him away. But Parker’s not giving up, not on Paradise and not on Hailey. He’s come a long way in life by being laser-focused on his passions, and this time is no different…
