Book excerpt: "Michael Frayn has the rare ability to construct farcical comedy around philosophical principles and the laughs and the ideas effortlessly intermesh" (Guardian) Four old friends sit down for a quiet evening together. But they are harassed by various bells, sirens, buzzers, warblers, beepers and cheepers, all trying to warn them of something. What are these electronic voices trying to tell them? Can they understand the mysterious disasters before disaster strikes? It's a race against time - because there are seven more plays and twenty more characters still to come before the evening is through, plus a lot more strange noises - and increasingly desperate calls from eleven separate pay phones...

He was also a scientist who practiced craniofacial anthropometry. He was born in Pill near Bristol and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. After working for the Civil Service in the General Post Office, he served in Belgium during World War I before being posted to the Somerset Light Infantry in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) between 1916 and 1918. He was appointed as Finance Minister and Wazir to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman (now Oman), a post he held from 1925 to 1932. In this capacity, he undertook a number of expeditions into the desert, and it was within this period that he became the first European to cross the Rub' Al Khali from 1930 and 1931.

In doing so, Lynn Keller resourcefully models a range of reading strategies that will assist others in analyzing the complex epistemology and craft of recent “exploratory” writing.

This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elevates alarm management from a fragmented collection of procedures, metrics, experiences, and trial-and-error, to the level of a technology discipline. It provides a complete treatment of best practices in alarm management. The technology and approaches found here provide the opportunity to completely understand the what, the why, and the how of successful alarm systems. No modern industrial enterprise, particularly in such areas as chemical processing, can operate without a secure and reliable infrastructure of alarms and controls—they are an integral part of all production management and control systems. Improving alarm management is an effective way to provide operators with high-value support and guidance to successfully manage industrial plant operations. Readers will find: Recommendations and guidelines are developed from fundamental concepts to provide powerful technical tools and workable approaches; Alarms are treated as indicators of abnormal situations, not simply sensor readings that might be out of position; Alarm improvement is intimately linked to infrastructure management, including the vital role of plant maintenance to alarm management, the need to manage operators’ charter to continue to operate during abnormal situations vs. cease operation, and the importance of situation awareness without undue reliance upon alarms. The ability to appreciate technical issues is important, but this book requires no previous specific technical, educational, or experiential background. The style and content are very accessible to a broad industrial audience from board operator to plant manager. All critical tasks are explained with workflow processes, examples, and insight into what it all means. Alternatives are offered everywhere to enable users to tailor-make solutions to their particular sites.

This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guns that boomed over the Napoleonic battlefield could be fired at a rate of two rounds a minute, blasting all and sundry in range to tiny pieces. No small wonder that the artillery of the period was so feared. However, supplying the guns was a tricky proposition, as the ammunition for the guns was bulky, difficult to move and dangerous to handle. Over train as wild as Portugal and Spain, command of Wellington’s field train was bound to be an arduous and trying job. Sir Richard Hennegan was the man to whom this post fell. His seven years’ campaigning with Wellington were filled with adventure and dash, and he was often at the front during movements of the army, assessing the best routes for his valuable cargo. This led to frequent meetings with the enemy and his allies, the Spanish Guerillas, who almost executed him twice due to mistaken identity. During engagements, the need to bring up ammunition to replenish the guns and muskets led him to be often near the commander and in the middle of the firing line. His memoirs are filled with memorable scenes and soldiers whom he met in and out of the line. Highly recommended. Author — Sir Richard D. Hennegan Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London : Colburn, 1846. Original Page Count – xii and 352 pages.

Book excerpt: When Henri Desgrange began a new bicycle road race in 1903, he saw it as little more than a temporary publicity stunt to promote his newspaper. The 60 cyclists who left Paris to ride through the night to Lyons that first July had little idea they were pioneers of the most famous of all bike races, which would reach its centenary as one of the greatest sporting events on earth. Geoffrey Wheatcroft's masterly history of the Tour de France's first hundred years is not just a hugely entertaining canter through some great Tour stories; nor is it merely a homage to the riders whose names—Coppi, Simpson, Mercx, Armstrong—are synonymous with the event's folly and glory. Focusing too on the race's role in French cultural life, it provides a unique and fascinating insight into Europe's 20th century.
