Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tasabbahuu bilkiraami wain lam takuunuu mitsalahum, fainnaa alttasabbaha bihim falahun "Be like them. Even if you cannot be exactly like them. Indeed, endeavouring to resemble the noble ones is the key to good fortune." Among the things that motivate us to have high aspirations and great determination is to look at the biographies and histories of the salaf al-shalih scholars. They were perfect examples of knowledge and 'amal. When a seeker of knowledge sees his humbleness, his lack of deeds, then sees how great the deeds and knowledge of the scholars are, he will be motivated to follow their customs, and will be encouraged to resemble their deeds and characteristics. ** Abu Yaqub al-Buwayti, a successor of Muhammad Ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, made an important contribution to the formation of the Shafi'i school of law. He reconstructs the interpretation of al-Shafi'i thought in his Mukhtashar. This book is a modest attempt to present the biography and works of one of the most important scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought. In this second edition, we have expanded in more detail with two Arabic papers for the Master's programme discussing al-Buwayti and his Mukhtashar, and a book and articles by Ahmed El Shamsy such as The Canonization of Islamic Law: A Social and Intellectual History (2013), The First Shāfiʿī: The Traditionalist Legal Thought of Abū Yaʿqūb al-Buwayṭī (2007), Rethinking 'Taqlīd' in the Early Shāfiʿī School (2008). I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for any errors in the letter and my English. I am simply an individual engaged in the pursuit of enhancing my abilities in the realm of da'wah, with the intention of providing assistance to fellow Muslims. I would be most grateful if you could support my work by sharing or purchasing my book. Book Synopsis The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal by : Ibn al-Jawzī
Download or read book The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal written by Ibn al-Jawzī and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal is a translation of the biography of Ibn Hanbal by the Baghdad preacher, scholar, and storyteller Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1200), newly abridged for a paperback readership by translator Michael Cooperson. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (d. 241/855), renowned for his profound knowledge of hadiths—the reports of the Prophet’s sayings and deeds—is a major figure in the history of Islam. He was famous for living according to his own strict interpretation of the Prophetic model and for denying himself the most basic comforts, even though his family was prominent and his city, Baghdad, was then one of the wealthiest in the world. Ibn Ḥanbal’s piety and austerity made him a folk hero, especially after he resisted the attempts of two caliphs to force him to accept rationalist doctrine. His subsequent imprisonment and flogging is one of the most dramatic episodes of medieval Islamic history, and his principled resistance influenced the course of Islamic law, the rise of Sunnism, and the legislative authority of the caliphate. Set against the background of fierce debates over the role of reason and the basis of legitimate government, The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal tells the formidable life tale of one of the most influential Muslims in history. An English-only edition.

Book Synopsis Risalah by : Ibn Abi Zayd Al-Qayrawani
Download or read book Risalah written by Ibn Abi Zayd Al-Qayrawani and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost unique among the works of Muslim scholars, this book, which for Malikis is THE Risalah, was written for children when the author was 17 years old. The sheer pedagogical audacity of introducing children to what is in effect a complete overview of life and human society escapes most people and most Muslims today. The author commences with usul ad-deen - the roots of the deen - a survey of the vital Muslim worldview, proceeding then through purification and the acts of 'ibadah, the ordinary transactions such as marriage, divorce, buying and selling and so forth, and concluding with chapters of a general and miscellaneous nature. The book is here matched by the outstanding lucidity of the translation which reveals a book written in a narrative descriptive style rather than in a didactic scholarly tone, making it breathtakingly accessible. So significant was the book's authorship and so quickly was it recognised that its author became known as the "Young Malik" and his work became a foundational pillar of the madhhab of the School of Madinah and has endured for a millennium, in use both to teach absolute beginners as intended and as a resource for scholars. This edition presents the translation in parallel with the Arabic text without vowellisation (tashkeel). Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (310 AH/922 CE - 386 AH/996 CE) was born in Qayrawan in Tunisia, arguably one of the most important Muslim cities after Makkah and Madinah, which was always famous for learning and in particular for its staunch adherence to the school of the people of Madinah as transmitted by Imam Malik. His life was overshadowed by the Fatimid dynasty, during which he and the other teachers of Qayrawan calmly kept alive the teaching of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah. Among his other well-known works are the massive multi-volume an-Nawadir wa'z-Ziyadat and a mukhtasar-abridgement of the Mudawwanah of which only the Kitab al-Jami', a comprehensive work containing a wide variety of topics, is extant. Aisha Bewley is the translator of a large number of classical works of Islam and Sufism, often in collaboration with Abdalhaqq Bewley, notably The Noble Qur'an - a New Rendering of Its Meanings in English; Muhammad, Messenger of Allah - the translation of Qadi 'Iyad's ash-Shifa'; the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas; and Imam an-Nawawi's Riyad as-Salihin.
Book Synopsis Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence by : Norman Calder
Download or read book Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence written by Norman Calder and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a coherent theory of the origins and early development of Islamic law. The author grounds his argument in a series of representative passages from the earliest juristic works, many of them translated here for the first time. Succeeding chapters demonstrate the creativity of early Muslim civilization in literary forms, juristic norms, and hermeneutic technique. Drawing on the tradition of Islamic scholarship represented by such names as Ignaz Goldziher, Joseph Schacht, and John Wansborough, Calder is sensitive also to the development of methodology and technique in the parallel fields of Biblical and Rabbinical Studies. Grounding all his major generalizations in precise textual detail, he evokes the social, political and intellectual concerns of Muslim civilization in its most formative period. Calder demonstrates that many of the usual connotations are not appropriate to the understanding of early Muslim jurisprudence. The surviving texts constitute and lively record of how the early Muslim community created the major symbols of its own identity.
