Book excerpt: Limited flight tests of a prototype aircraft were conducted at 3 test facilities at various altitudes. Testing concentrated on hover and level flight performance, controllability, and low-speed flight characteristics at heavy gross weight, high density altitude test conditions. The YAH-1S represents a significant improvement over the AH-1G/Q helicopter by virtue of its increased useful load-carrying capability, directional controllability and control margin, and hover performance capability. The control system characteristics of the YAH-1S failed to meet several requirements of applicable paragraphs of military specification MIL-H-8501A and the approved BHC deviations to MIL-H-8501A against which they were tested, but were still considered satisfactory. One shortcoming was noted.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation of the third and fourth production UH-60A (Black Hawk) helicopters from 27 October 1979 through 9 October 1980. Performance, handling qualities, and vibration characteristics were evaluated to provide data for the operator's manual and to determine compliance with the applicable paragraphs of the Prime Item Development Specification. The UH-60A met 5 of the 7 performance comments evaluated with reference to the Prime Item Development Specification. The performance of the UH-60A was better than the YUH-60A because of the lower primary mission gross weight of the aircraft, the reduced power required, and the increased power available. Due to the priorities set by United States Army Aviation Research and Development Command the handling qualities portion of the Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation was extremely limited. The excellent engine torque matching greatly reduced pilot work load in the area of power management. When maneuvering, the limited load factor envelope at heavy gross weight was easily exceeded. The vibrations were found to be quite high in several areas and were considered to be excessive for a new generation helicopter.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the AH-1S helicopter with OGEE tip-shape main rotor blades to determine if any improvement in performance or handling qualities resulted from replacing the K747 blades. Additionally, the acoustics signature of the OGEE blades were measured by the US Army Research and Technology Laboratories (Aeromechanics Lab). Tests were conducted at Edwards Air Force Base (elevation 2302 feet) and Coyote Flats (elevation 9980 feet), California from 1 November 1979 through 8 April 1980. Forty-five test flights were flown for a total of 36.6 productive hours (63.2 total hours). Both hover and level flight performance were degraded by installation of OGEE tip-shape main rotor blades. Low-speed handling qualities were unaffected by the OGEE blades. Other handling qualities tests were not accomplished. Results of acoustics tests will be reported by the laboratories under a separate cover. (Author).

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics evaluation of the UH-1H aircraft with an Improved Engine Air Filtration System (IEAFS) installed and with the standard filter installed between 16 September 1987 and 29 February 1988. Aircraft performance and handling qualities, engine-air induction system compatibility, and engine performance with the IEAFS installed were evaluated. This evaluation was conducted at Edwards AFB, California. Twenty-five flights were conducted for a total of 20.1 productive flight hours. The aircraft performance and handling qualities, engine vibrations, and inlet temperature characteristics with the IEAFS installed are not significantly different from those of the standard UH-1H. The inlet pressure distortion and engine installation losses with the IEAFS installed are less than those of the standard UH-1H. One deficiency, the poor reliability of the IEAFS latch rivets, was identified. One shortcoming, the poor reliability of the latch lever locking device, was identified. Both the deficiency and the shortcoming should be corrected before production. Engine installation losses, Engine vibrations, Engine air filtration system, Inlet pressure distortion, Inlet temperature characteristics, Performance, Handling qualities, Standard filter. (mjm).

Book excerpt: The AH-1G helicopter with the HELLFIRE modular Missile System (HMMS) and the Airborne Target Acquisition Fire Control System (ATAFCS) is being used as a surrogate trainer for the YAH-64 helicopter. The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity was tasked to provide quantitative and qualitative data on the handling qualities of the helicopter, obtain limited level flight performance data, and obtain limited handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed. The test helicopter was a production AH-1G helicopter (212 tail rotor) modified with an ATAFCS mockup and carrying eight HELLFIRE missiles. Six productive flight test hours were flown in six flights. No shortcomings or deficiencies attributable to HMMS and ATAFCS installation were found. The AH-1G helicopter, with HMMS and ATAFCS installed, exhibits an additional equivalent flat plate area of 4.0 ft2 compared to the standard AH-1Q helicopter. The handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed are essentially the same as the production AH-1G helicopter. (Author).

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the EH-1H Helicopter Quick Fix Phase 1A to determine the effects of the installation of the AN/ARQ-33 radio countermeasures system and its associated equipment on aircraft handling qualities. The helicopter was tested from 18 through 23 August 1977 at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. During the tests, nine flights totaling 8.5 productive flight hours were flown. The handling qualities of the EH-1H helicopter were determined to be satisfactory with the exception of inadequate directional control in right sideward flight. An enhancing characteristic noted was the simultaneous antenna retraction systems. Inadequate directional control at right sideward velocities between 5 and 15 knots true airspeed was a deficiency. Two shortcomings were noted: the susceptibility to damage of the right FM 10-120 homing antenna during preflight/maintenance operations and the susceptibility to damage of the FM 10-242 communications antenna during running takeoff/landing maneuvers. Book excerpt: This addendum to the performance report presents the results of turning performance, in-ground-effect (IGE) level acceleration and deceleration performance and dive recovery tests. These three tests were conducted to validate portions of the AH-1G operator's manual (TM 55-1520-221-10) and enhance the knowledte of interested government agencies as to the limitations and capabilities of the AH-1G helicopter. Three major limitations were encountered during testing that restricted the pilot from achieving maximum performance: level acceleration and deceleration performance IGE is limited by extreme pitch attitudes; level deceleration performance is limited by the pilot's ability to maintain rotor speed below the maximum limit (339 rpm); the cyclic control feedback limits aircraft turning and dive recovery performance at heavy gross weight and/or when high load factors are encountered. Book excerpt: The Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test of the Bell 214ST helicopter (S/N N3186W) was conducted by the US Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity (USAAEFA). The test was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base (elevation 2302 feet), Bakersfield (elevation 488 feet), Bishop (elevation 4120 feet) and Coyote Flats (elevation 9980 feet), California. A total of 62.6 hours (27.5 productive hours) were flown between 1 July and 27 August 1985. Hover, level flight and autorotational descent performance tests were conducted. Handling qualities tests included static and dynamic stability, maneuvering stability, power management, systems failures, mission maneuvers and flight in simulated Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). The airspeed for best glide distance determined from the autorotational descent performance test results of this evaluation was significantly less than the best glide distance airspeed presented in the flight manual. The out-of-ground effect hover test results when compared to the flight manual indicated less hover capability at standard day conditions and altitude below 8060 feet but better hover capability at higher altitudes. The maximum difference between the flight manual and the test results of this evaluation was 250 pounds, below 8060 feet. Two major conclusions reached were: the 214ST is an excellent IMC aircraft with its IMC capabilities exceeding those of any US Army helicopters and its cockpit design significantly reduces pilot workload in most modes of flight.
