Book excerpt: The break-up of BAA and the blocked takeover of Bratislava airport by the competing Vienna airport have brought the issue of airport competition to the top of the agenda for air transport policy in Europe. Airport Competition reviews the current state of the debate and asks whether airport competition is strong enough to effectively limit market power. It provides evidence on how travellers chose an airport, thereby altering its competitive position, and on how airports compete in different regions and markets. The book also discusses the main policy implications of mergers and subsidies.

Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years, airports within the EU – including nearly a hundred newly built or rebuilt during that time – have undergone a major economic transformation. From mere infrastructure providers, airports have become diversified and complex commercial enterprises in competition with each other. This is the first and only book thus far to deal with the legal issues surrounding this important development, focusing on the impact of EU Directive 12/2009 on airport charges. Examining the use of airport infrastructure, the growing competition among airports, and the relations between airlines and airports, the author, a leading aviation law practitioner, covers such issues and topics as the following: - types of charges – landing, passenger, aircraft parking; - pricing factors determining airport charges; - vertical contractual relations between airports and airlines; - airport market power and dominance; - issues of consultation and transparency; - ability of airlines and passengers to switch to alternative airports; - application of state aid rules; - security charges; - environmental charges and schemes; and - price discrimination and differentiation. The presentation encompasses a critical analysis of the findings of case law, both international and European, on airport charges in the context of the new trend of airports and airlines concluding vertical agreements. As an examination of the economic regulation of EU airports due to the liberalization process, structural changes in the ownership status of many EU airports, and the emergence of new airline business models (such as low-cost carriers), this book, the only one of its kind, will quickly become indispensable to practitioners, policymakers, and academics in aviation law.

Approaching management topics from a strategic and commercial perspective rather than from an operational and technical angle, the book provides an innovative insight into the processes behind running a successful airport. Completely revised and updated for a third edition, with international case studies from BAA, Vienna, Aer Rianta, and countries around the world, this book reflects the huge changes in the management of airports today and tackles many key issues. Accessible and up-to-date, Managing Airports is ideal for students, lecturers and researchers of transport and tourism, and practitioners within the air transport industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 2,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: Current occurrence of strikes by ground and cabin staff, the formation of strategic alliances between airlines, mergers and acquisitions of ground handling (GH) companies and the expansion of airport infrastructures dominate the actual news in the aviation sector and reveal noticeable changes and new dynamics as well as new challenges in the industry. The changes did not only start now but began with the introduction of more competition into the market through the liberalization of airlines at the end of the 1980s which was followed by intensified airport competition and the deregulation of the GH market in 1996. The introduction of competition generally leads to more efficient market conditions. Overall, prices for flights have dropped considerably in the past two decades which has led to dramatic increases in air traffic demand and a new strategic environment for all market participants. Nevertheless, ongoing strikes by airline, GH and airport staff reveal that the situation in the aviation industry is far from optimal. The purpose of this paper is to examine the developments in the GH market with regard to their origins, current trends and potential future consequences. The main focus will lie on the analysis of the effects of the deregulation of ground handling services (GHS) at Community airports assessed by the EU Directive 96/67/EC in 1996. The liberalization process of the GH market shall be observed from different angles focusing on the broadly differing stakeholders’ points of view. The thesis is structured as follows: First, an overall framework and background of developments in the aviation industry shall give an introduction to the subject. Second, the market structure of GHS in Europe with a focus on Germany shall be observed and connected to the broader framework of public regulation and deregulation. Third, the effects of the deregulation of GHS at airports will be further specified and elaborated. The analysis of the effects will be segmented into four parts: overall effects, effects on horizontal integration, effects on vertical integration and effects on the employees. Finally, the theoretical concepts and practical findings will be completed by real observations and empirical data obtained from interviews with different stakeholders in the GH industry.

Book excerpt: Security is critical to transport systems as they are often appealing targets for terrorist attacks. The significant costs of potential damage make effective security policies a key concern for transport decision makers. This publication examines the contribution economic analysis can make to improving security in aviation and maritime shipping by identifying methods for quantifying the benefits of security measures and assessing their effectiveness, and examining techniques to allocate resources targeting the highest risks.

Book excerpt: On the morning of September 11, 2001, thousands of airline and airport professionals headed off for what they assumed would be just another day on the job. It was anything but. Approaching the fifth anniversary of that tragic day, the stories of the heroes and casualties among these dedicated air travel workers remain largely untold--until now. A compassionate and ultimately uplifting reflection on the nature of loss and the seeds of recovery, Reclaiming the Sky honors not only those workers who died doing their jobs, but also the ones that soldiered through on that day and in the aftermath, tirelessly piecing back together the fragments of a shattered industry--and indeed a critical social and economic force--while putting aside their own fears and grief. In conjunction with a website, reclaimingthesky.com--where readers can share their stories and thoughts--the book not only honors the heroes and casualties of 9/11, it also offers common ground to those seeking meaning, purpose and the strength to move forward.
