Book Synopsis The Airline Revolution by : Gordon Mills
Download or read book The Airline Revolution written by Gordon Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When starting new airlines in response to government deregulation, entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Europe reduced some traditional service qualities (to reduce costs), concentrated on non-stop services between city pairs not already so connected, improved on-time performance, and offered low fares to win leisure travelers from the incumbents and to encourage more travel. In recent developments, some of the new airlines have offered optional extras (at higher fares) to attract business travelers and entered major routes alongside the legacy carriers. Within both the U.S. and Europe, deregulation removed most geographical barriers to expansion by short-haul airlines. Later, limited deregulation spread to other world regions, where many short-haul routes connect city pairs in different countries, and where governments have retained traditional two-country mechanisms restricting who may fly. To gain access to domestic routes in other countries, some new airlines are setting up affiliate companies in neighboring countries, with each company legally controlled in the country of domicile. With air travel growing strongly, especially in Asia, a common result is intense, but potentially short-lived, competition on major routes. The recent developments give clear signposts to likely mid-term outcomes, and make this an opportune time to report on the new-airline scene. The Airline Revolution will provide valuable economic analysis of this climate to students, airline professionals advancing to senior positions, public servants and others who provide advice to governments.
Book Synopsis Living Legislation by : William J. Novak
Download or read book Living Legislation written by William J. Novak and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political scholars examine the dynamic evolution of laws over time in a volume that “pushes the frontiers of knowledge about lawmaking in the US” (Choice). Politics is at its most dramatic during debates over important pieces of legislation. And while debates over legislative measures can rage for years or even decades before an item is enacted, they also endure long afterward, when the political legacy of a law eventually comes into focus. With a diverse set of contributors—including quantitative political scientists, political development scholars, historians, and economists—Living Legislation provides fresh insights into contemporary American politics and public policy. Many of the contributors to this volume focus on the question of why some laws stand the test of time while others are eliminated, replaced, or significantly amended. Others discuss how laws emerge from—and effect change within—coalition structures; the effectiveness of laws at mediating partisan conflicts; and the ways in which laws interact with broader shifts in the political environment. An essential addition to the study of politics, Living Legislation enhances understanding of democracy, governance, and power.
Book Synopsis The Geographies of Air Transport by : Dr Lucy Budd
Download or read book The Geographies of Air Transport written by Dr Lucy Budd and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a detailed contribution to geographies of air transport and aeromobility, this book examines the practices and processes that produce particular patterns of air transport provision both regionally and globally. In so doing, it updates the seminal contributions of Eva Taylor (1945), Kenneth Sealy (1957), Brian Graham (1995) and others to the study of air transport geography. Leading scholars in the field offer a unique insight into the key developments that have occurred in the field and the implications that these developments have had for geography, geographers, and global patterns of past, present and future air transport. Although globalization and liberalization processes have greatly expanded the demand for air transport over the last two decades, the industry has experienced several major setbacks due to economic, security, and environmental concerns. Many of these impacts have been much more pronounced in some regions, such as North America and Europe while others, such as Asia-Pacific have not been as adversely affected. Accordingly, there is a clear need to examine these recent economic and geopolitical changes from a geographical perspective given the differentiated pattern of effects from global processes. Addressing this need, this volume opens with thematic chapters covering key topics such as the historical geographies, socio-cultural mobilities, environmental externalities, urban geographies, and sustainability of the global air transport industry, followed by regional analysis of the industry in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Greater Middle East and Africa as well as North America and Europe.

Book Synopsis Deregulating the Airlines by : Elizabeth E. Bailey
Download or read book Deregulating the Airlines written by Elizabeth E. Bailey and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The airline industry has been buffeted by the forces of deregulation since themid-1970s. Many new firms have entered, some with different price and operating philosophies andsome of these have thrived. Other airlines have gone bankrupt. Overall the real cost of air travelhas declined considerably; however, the effects have varied dramatically from market to market.Exactly how was this massive experiment envisioned and planned? How has it worked? And how will itwork in the long run?Deregulating the Airlines narrates and analyzes the decisions taken by theCivil Aeronautics Board during the transition to deregulation and the reasoning behind the AirlineDeregulation Act of 1978. It provides many comparisons of the industry before and after deregulationand uses those data to test the various hypotheses that scholars and politicians have advanced abouthow markets would behave if regulation were removed. Its findings provide information on both thedemand and the cost side that will be important in molding the long-run equilibrium of the industry, and it discusses how quickly the industry is moving toward that equilibrium. For policymakers andstudents of regulation in particular, this study provides a unique case for contrasting theoperation of an industry under close regulatory control and its operation free of such controls. Itis able to make use of an unusually large volume of data on the costs, operations, and prices ofindividual firms to show how markets work and how regulation works. The book's in-depth analysis ofthe impact of policy changes in the airline industry is drawn in part from the authors' activeinvolvement in implementing the new policies. Elizabeth Bailey is Dean of the Graduate School ofIndustrial Administration at Carnegie-Mellon. Previously she was a commissioner and vice chairman atthe Civil Aeronautics Board. Daniel Kaplan is director of the Board's Office of Economic Analysis.David R. Graham, manager of the Defense Economics Program at the Institute for Defense Analysis, wasa Board economist.Deregulating the Airlines is tenth in the series, Regulation of Economic Activity, edited by Richard Schmalensee.
