Book excerpt: This information report (AIR) provides design information of various contemporary aircraft fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control actuation systems that may be useful in the design of future systems for similar applications. It is primarily applicable to manned aircraft. It presents the basic characteristics, hardware descriptions, redundancy concepts, functional schematics, and discussions of the servo controls, failure monitoring, and fault tolerance. All existing FBW actuation systems are not described herein; however, those most representing the latest designs are included. While this AIR is intended as a reference source of information for aircraft actuation system designs, the exclusion or omission of any other appropriate actuation system or subsystem should not limit consideration of their use on future aircraft.

Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art computational facility for aircraft flight control design, evaluation, and integration called CONDUIT (Control Designer's Unified Interface) has been developed. This paper describes the CONDUIT tool and case study applications to complex rotary- and fixed- wing fly-by-wire flight control problems. Control system analysis and design optimization methods are presented, including definition of design specifications and system models within CONDUIT, and the multi-objective function optimization (CONSOL-OPTCAD) used to tune the selected design parameters. Design examples are based on flight test programs for which extensive data are available for validation. CONDUIT is used to analyze baseline control laws against pertinent military handling qualities and control system specifications. In both case studies, CONDUIT successfully exploits trade-offs between forward loop and feedback dynamics to significantly improve the expected handling qualities and minimize the required actuator authority. The CONDUIT system provides a new environment for integrated control system analysis and design, and has potential for significantly reducing the time and cost of control system flight test optimization.

Book excerpt: This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.

Book excerpt: This book provides a basic understanding of adaptive control and its applications in Flight control. It discusses the designing of an adaptive feedback control system and analyzes this for flight control of linear and nonlinear aircraft models using synthetic jet actuators. It also discusses control methodologies and the application of control techniques which will help practicing flight control and active flow control researchers. It also covers modelling and control designs which will also benefit researchers from the background of fluid mechanics and health management of actuation systems. The unique feature of this book is characterization of synthetic jet actuator nonlinearities over a wide range of angles of attack, an adaptive compensation scheme for such nonlinearities, and a systematic framework for feedback control of aircraft dynamics with synthetic jet actuators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeronautical engineers concerned with the analysis of aircraft dynamics and the synthesis of aircraft flight control systems will find an indispensable tool in this analytical treatment of the subject. Approaching these two fields with the conviction that an understanding of either one can illuminate the other, the authors have summarized selected, interconnected techniques that facilitate a high level of insight into the essence of complex systems problems. These techniques are suitable for establishing nominal system designs, for forecasting off-nominal problems, and for diagnosing the root causes of problems that almost inevitably occur in the design process. A complete and self-contained work, the text discusses the early history of aircraft dynamics and control, mathematical models of linear system elements, feedback system analysis, vehicle equations of motion, longitudinal and lateral dynamics, and elementary longitudinal and lateral feedback control. The discussion concludes with such topics as the system design process, inputs and system performance assessment, and multi-loop flight control systems. Originally published in 1974. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development, testing and demonstration of a Hydra-Optic Flight Control Actuation System (HOFCAS) suitable for the actuation tasks of a Digital Fly-By-Wire flight control system. HOFCAS offers a realistic, cost effective approach to reducing the susceptibility of aircraft fly-by-wire systems to EMP, EMI, RFI, lightning, etc. By removing the conventional wiring to the actuation areas of an aircraft, the concept eliminates the opportunity for electromagnetic hazards to enter the system. The HOFCAS concept provides a direct drive, hydraulically powered surface actuation system that provides immunity to electromagnetic radiation. The direct drive actuator, developed in a previous multiphase Navy Advanced Flight Control Actuation System (AFCAS) program, uses an electrical torque motor to power a single stage hydraulic valve for control of the actuator. A hydraulically powered alternator supplies the electrical power needed to operate the torque motor. The actuator command signal is supplied by a fiber optic link. The HOFCAS was configured to operate the directional control system in a T-2C aircraft. The AFCAS program demonstrated direct digital control of a surface actuator, and the HOFCAS extends this technology to demonstrate that conventional interconnecting electrical wiring to the surface actuators can be eliminated.

Book excerpt: This report describes the design and test of a multipurpose actuation test rig to be used for loaded evaluation of actuation systems with rotary outputs and/or integrated as part of wing structure. It also describes a hydromechanical flutter damping module for an F-4 stabilator actuator. The module incorporates design improvements based on previous test results. Laboratory tests results on the improved module are presented. Development and test results of a linear force motor based upon a moving magnet concept, and the measured performance characteristics of the concept over a range of parameter variations are presented. A method of force enhancement for direct drive force motors and the corresponding test results applied to a moving coil force motor are described. The concept is based upon applying a limited time duration pulse to the force motor in order to increase the force output when required. The logic technique used to initiate the pulse application is presented. Applying a digital computer as a controller for an analog electrohydraulic control system requires consideration of the interface used. The effect of a pulse width modulation interface on the life of analog electrohydraulic hardware is presented. There is a potential for reducing the pumping capacity of an aircraft's flight control hydraulic system by using accumulators to store hydraulic energy. The results of a study using this approach and an F-16 simulation are presented. Keywords: Digital interface; Energy storage; Flight control hydraulics; Force enhancement, Flutter suppression.
