The U.S. Government is developing techniques to conduct rapid, efficient surveys; especially airborne laser bathymeters. The first system should be in use by 1983. It will penetrate to 28 meters under typical conditions and will be deployed in a helicopter from a coastal survey ship. A hybrid system using a combined laser and multispectral scanner is also under development for surveying clear, shoal areas. Advanced high pulse rate laser systems are also under study. (Author).

Book excerpt: Airborne lidar technology is attractive for hydrographic surveying because of its high rate of area coverage coupled will high spatial data density, rapid-response and reconnaissance capabilities, and cost effectiveness. The National Ocean Service (NOS) has been involved in the design, implementation, and testing of such systems in conjunction with NASA, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) since 1975. Two topics of current interest are 1) the probability of detection of small objects on the sea bottom as a function of their size, and 2) the efficient reduction of the very large data sets to hydrographically representative but much smaller subsets. Results for both of these are reported here.

The best times of the year are predicted for conducting laser bathymetry, considering the temporal and spatial variability of optical properties due to seasonal effects, and charts of seasonally averaged optical measurements are given. Original formulas to convert beam attenuation coefficients and Secchi depth measurements to irradiance attenuation coefficients are included. The number of irradiance attenuation lengths to the bottom depth (Kd) are used as the indicator to estimate areas where laser hydrography systems would be successful and are shown by season and region. The conclusions of this thesis are that airborne laser hydrography is not practical in the coastal waters of Oregon and Washington, would be practical in limited areas of the western Gulf Coast, and would be very practical in the eastern Gulf Coast area. Along the eastern Gulf Coast a 38,800 sq nmi area, delineated by a Kd = 4 contour, is judged surveyable by laser. (Author).

These measurements, which were conducted from fishing piers, boats and airplanes were made for the purpose of verifying the empirical model which was developed during the laboratory phase of this program. In nearly all cases, good correlation was found to exist between these field measurements and the empirical model. A summary of the salient laser and system parameters for an airborne laser bathymetry system is included. Laboratory measurements were conducted on laser induced dye fluorescence. The results of these experiments showed that both the depth of a dye cloud (composed of two or more dyes) and its temperature could be determined using ratio detection techniques.

Book excerpt: "Technical Memorandum CS-32 assessed the use of existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE's) National Coastal Mapping Program (NCMP) Airborne Lidar Bathymetry (ALB) data for hydrographic purposes. The conclusions of the study were positive about the potential use of USACE ALB data to fill in data gaps in coastal bathymetry (nearshore areas that are low priority for hydrographic surveys). This Technical Memorandum outlines USACE's current ALB processing workflow, provides a recommended workflow for data obtained from USACE by Coast Survey for use in NOAA products and offers a first step in estimating an ALB survey uncertainty value. In addition, the uncertainty components for the workflow procedure are identified and evaluated (separately and as a final product). A first-order approximation of the horizontal and vertical uncertainty components for the ALB survey data set as a whole were calculated.
