Book excerpt: Encompassing papers presented at the 25th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, this book is the latest from a successful conference series. International academics and air pollution experts address various aspects of air pollution and provide an insight into the science and policy frameworks. The management of air pollution is one of the most challenging problems facing the international community. The need to balance concern for the environment with the demand for generating economic growth makes air pollution a particularly challenging issue, requiring global attention and cooperation. Science can help us identify the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and it has become essential in guiding government decisions regarding the most appropriate and effective regulations. This book presents advances in our knowledge of the science of air pollution. The Air Pollution series of conferences has consistently recognised that science remains the key to identifying the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and reaffirmed that science is essential in the formulation of policy relevant information for regulatory decision making. The conference series also acknowledged, at a very early stage, that science alone will not improve a polluted atmosphere. Scientific knowledge derived from well-designed studies needs to be allied with additional technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. Leading research originating all over the world is included and covers the subsequent topics: Air pollution modelling; Monitoring and measuring; Air quality management; Indoor air pollution; Aerosols and particles; Industrial and travel emissions; Exposure and health effects; Economics of air pollution control; Innovative technologies; Challenges for the future; Strategic and project assessment; Green technologies and techniques; Stationary and mobile emissions; Social economic issues; Environmental impact assessment; Air pollution and climate change; Air quality forecasting.

Book excerpt: In these proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, international academics and air pollution practitioners contribute to the evolving understanding of the science and policy contexts of air pollution. All the books from the conference series have discussed important air pollution issues at an international, national and local level and by virtue of their truly international composition have brought to the discussion a unique suite of perspectives. The conference findings enjoy a wide and rapid dissemination amongst the air pollution science and policy communities. The management of air pollution is one of the most challenging problems facing the international community. A particular strength of the series has been the attention given to regulatory and market solutions to air pollution management. The Air Pollution series of conferences has consistently acknowledged that science remains the key to identifying the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and reaffirmed that science is essential in the formulation of policy relevant information for regulatory decision making. The conference series also acknowledged, at a very early stage, that science alone will not improve a polluted atmosphere. The scientific knowledge derived from well-designed studies needs to be allied with further technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. In turn, the science, technology and economic outcomes are necessary but not sufficient. Topics covered include: Air pollution modelling; Air pollution mitigation and management; Aerosols and particles; Emission studies; Health effects; Indoor air pollution; Air data quality; Monitoring and measuring; Case studies; Air pollution control technologies; Industrial air pollution; Air pollution science; Global and regional studies; Climate change effects; GIS & remote sensing applications; Emerging pollutants; Socio economic issues; Public engagement; Policy and legislation.

Book excerpt: The study of turbulence in the atmosphere has seen considerable progress in the last decade. To put it briefly: boundary-layer meteorology, the branch of atmospheric science that concentrates on turbulence in the lower atmosphere, has moved from the surface layer into the boundary layer itself. The progress has been made on all fronts: theoretical, numerical and observational. On the other hand, air pollution modeling has not seen such a rapid evolution. It has not benefited as much as it should have from the increasing knowledge in the field of atmospheric turbulence. Air pollution modeling is still in many ways based on observations and theories of the surface layer only. This book aims to bring the reader up to date on recent advances in boundary-layer meteorology and to pave the path for applications in air pollution dispersion problems. The text originates from the material presented during a short course on Atmospheric Turbulence and Air Pollution Modeling held in The Hague during September 1981. This course was sponsored and organized by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, xi xii PREFACE to which both editors are affiliated. The Netherlands Government Ministry of Health and Environmental Protection and the Council of Europe also gave support.

Book excerpt: Dealing with issues related to the modelling, monitoring and management of air pollution, this book includes papers presented at the 26th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution. The papers from this conference continue a wide ranging collection of high quality research works that develop the fundamental science of air pollution. Air pollution issues remain one of the most challenging problems facing society. The scientific knowledge derived from well-designed studies needs to be allied with further technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. Increasingly, it is being recognised that the outcome of such research needs to be contextualised within well formulated communication strategies that help policy makers and citizens to understand and appreciate the risks and rewards arising from air pollution management. Details of the wide spread nature of the air pollution phenomena and in depth explorations of their impacts on human health and the environment are covered in this book.

The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mixing-layer height and the average wind speed within the mixing layer were calculated twice for each day of a 5-year record of upper air observations at 62 National Weather Service stations int he contiguous United States. The times of day of these calculations are morning and mid-afternoon. A rough allowance was made for effects of the urban "heat island" on the morning mixing heights. The morning and afternoon times coincide approximately with those of maximum and secondary minimum concentrations of slow-reacting pollutants in cities. These calculations illustrate the typical large diurnal variation in atmospheric dispersion. Twenty charts present seasonal and annual, and morning and afternoon mean mixing heights and wind speeds. A model of some general dispersion features over urban areas is described in which the normalized pollutant concentration averaged over a city is a function of mixing height, wind speed, and city size (distance the wind travels across the city). Frequency values of mixing height by wind speed are used with the model to calculate average normalized concentration frequencies for each weather station. Thirty charts present isopleth analyses of seasonal and annual, and morning and afternoon normalized pollutant concentrations that were exceeded 10, 25, and 50 percent of the time for specified city sizes. The occurrence of episodes during which upper limits on mixing height and wind speed were not exceeded were determined from the daily morning and afternoon values of these parameters. Isopleths of the total number of episode-days for episodes lasting at least 2 days and at least 5 days with various limiting mixing-height and wind-speed values are presented in 20 charts.
