Maslansky Hazardous emergency responders and safety personnel take noteif youve ever needed a hands-on manual that gives easy-to-understand, step-by-step instruction on the function, use, operation, and limitations of air monitoring instruments, Air Monitoring Instrumentation is that manual. This straightforward guide is written by two noted consultants in the field, who have had many years of experience utilizing and teaching the proper use of air monitoring equipment. While many books address the theory and science behind air sampling, this is the only sourcebook that actually teaches the proper use of many different types of instruments, while also providing information on properly recording and interpreting readings. The instruments covered here are some of the most popular pieces of equipment in use today, and include: combustible gas indicators electrochemical sensors colorimetric detector tubes photoionization detectors flame ionization detectors toxic gas leak detectors radiation meters. With the help of numerous examples drawn from actual field operations, Air Monitoring Instrumentation demonstrates how to evaluate, operate, and interpret instrument responses during emergency, investigatory, and remedial operations. You can improve your comprehension of each piece of equipment and its application through learning objectives, review questions, and problem sets found throughout the book. Carefully presented examples, diagrams, and photographs also help to build your understanding of the equipment and its proper use. Air Monitoring Instrumentations uniquely practical, useful coverage gives you a vital understanding of: the pros and cons of different manufacturers, models, and designs, including older discontinued models still in common use, and modifications available to basic models strategies for choosing the best air monitoring devices for specific applications, including emergency response, industrial situations, confined space hazards, and hazardous waste site operations specific limitations for the most commonly used devices, including information not found in manufacturers manuals and much more When you use Air Monitoring Instrumentation, youll also get access to extensive checklists, conversion tables, and field report formsvital parts of instrument deployment. This extremely practical, expert guide will be an essential working tool for hazardous material responders, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, health departments, and industrial and manufacturing site workers.

Book excerpt: This open access book was prepared as a Final Publication of the COST Action IC1303 “Algorithms, Architectures and Platforms for Enhanced Living Environments (AAPELE)”. The concept of Enhanced Living Environments (ELE) refers to the area of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) that is more related with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Effective ELE solutions require appropriate ICT algorithms, architectures, platforms, and systems, having in view the advance of science and technology in this area and the development of new and innovative solutions that can provide improvements in the quality of life for people in their homes and can reduce the financial burden on the budgets of the healthcare providers. The aim of this book is to become a state-of-the-art reference, discussing progress made, as well as prompting future directions on theories, practices, standards, and strategies related to the ELE area. The book contains 12 chapters and can serve as a valuable reference for undergraduate students, post-graduate students, educators, faculty members, researchers, engineers, medical doctors, healthcare organizations, insurance companies, and research strategists working in this area.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the principles and methods of air quality assessment aimed at measuring population exposure to ambient air pollutants and estimating the effects on health. Addressed to policy-makers as well as scientists engaged in air quality monitoring, the book responds to the failure of most monitoring systems to provide data that are useful in estimating and managing threats to health. The need for exposure data on populations at special risk is also addressed. Throughout, emphasis is placed on methods of monitoring and modelling that are cost-effective, targeted, and appropriate to local and national conditions. The report has six chapters. The first introduces WHO activities related to air quality management and explains the need for monitoring systems capable of assessing health impact. The types of information required for health impact assessment are described in chapter two, which outlines several methods of monitoring and modelling that can be used to measure the level and distribution of exposure to air pollutants in populations, identify population groups with high exposure, and estimate adverse effects on health. Chapter three formulates a general concept of air quality assessment, offering advice on principles for designing a monitoring network, interpreting and reporting data, and solving problems with quality assurance. Also included is a comparison of the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of different methods for air quality monitoring. Against this background, the fourth and most extensive chapter describes specific methods for the monitoring of carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, lead, and atmospheric cadmium. Monitoring strategies for each pollutant are presented according to a standard format, which covers health effects, sources and exposure patterns, monitoring methods, recommended strategies for monitoring and assessment, and a practical example. The remaining chapters offer advice on the collation, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data, and summarize the main conclusions and recommendations of the report. Detailed technical guidelines for the use of various methods and models are provided in a series of annexes. The report also reproduces the newly revised WHO air quality guidelines for Europe.

Book excerpt: AIR QUALITY MONITORING AND CONTROL STRATEGY essentially deals with air quality and underlines a strategy to improve it. To this effect this volume describes briefly the problem of air pollution, impact of various pollutants present in the indoor/outdoor atmosphere on health, the various monitoring techniques/instruments and their practical use, instructions, precautions etc., control instrumentation and environment impact assessment. The answer to questions like the need for air quality monitoring, choice of monitoring location and parameters, averaging time and frequencies etc. has been provided along with the basic statistics required to work out certain statistical figures in air quality. The science of meteorology, an important subject that takes care of dispersion/dilution of air pollutants at a place, has been discussed briefly. A chapter on noise pollution, another vital air toxicant, has also been dealt with to a certain limit. Two case studies have been incorporated to elucidate the importance of EIA and the need to develop a strategy for management of ambient air quality. Revised new standards have also been included.

Book excerpt: Although poor air quality is probably not the hazard that is foremost in peoples' minds as they board planes, it has been a concern for years. Passengers have complained about dry eyes, sore throat, dizziness, headaches, and other symptoms. Flight attendants have repeatedly raised questions about the safety of the air that they breathe. The Airliner Cabin Environment and the Health of Passengers and Crew examines in detail the aircraft environmental control systems, the sources of chemical and biological contaminants in aircraft cabins, and the toxicity and health effects associated with these contaminants. The book provides some recommendations for potential approaches for improving cabin air quality and a surveillance and research program.
