This book was released on 1975 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted in order to determine the landing-impact behavior of a 0.3-scale, dynamically (but not physically) similar model of a high-density Navy fighter equipped with an air cushion landing system. The model was tested over a range of landing contact attitudes at high forward speeds and sink rates on a specialized test fixture at the Langley aircraft landing loads and traction facility. The investigation indicated that vertical acceleration at landing impact was highly dependent on the pitch angle at ground contact, the higher acceleration of approximately 5g occurring near zero body-pitch attitude. A limited number of low-speed taxi tests were made in order to determine model stability characteristics. The model was found to have good pitch-damping characteristics but stability in roll was marginal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Cushion Landing System is a scheme to replace the wheeled landing gear on aircraft by a peripheral jet air cushion. The concept employs a flexible elastic membrane or 'trunk' which is attached to the bottom of the aircraft fuselage. During flight, the trunk shrinks elastically and hugs the bottom of the fuselage like a de-icing boot. When a flow of air is applied to the inside of the trunk, the elastic material stretches and forms an elongated doughnut-shaped protrusion on the underside of the aircraft. The air flow is ducted by the trunk to the fuselage periphery and exhausted through a large number of holes or slots. As a result, a pressure builds up under the aircraft when the ground is approached. The pressure is sufficient to support the aircraft and absorb its vertical landing velocity. The study develops analytical relationships between the variables associated with the Air Cushion Landing System. Included are the following: The derivation of a theory which predicts the static characteristics of the system; Analytical methods for predicting flow, jet height and power requirements; Curves which illustrate the interrelationships among the design variables; Computer programs for predicting the cross-sectional area and shape of the elastic trunk; The development and test of an analytical model which predicts the dynamic response of the system to landing impact; A discussion of the design considerations for the system.

Book excerpt: The problems associated with existing recovery systems include difficulty in mid-air retrieval of RPV's in excess of 1500 lbs; high operations and support costs of parachutes, recovery helicopters, other aircraft and their crews; long recycle time; paving quality requirements for wheeled or skid type landing gear; and frequent damage of RPV's recovered by parachute/attenuation bag or parachute/mid-air recovery systems. Accordingly, this preliminary design study report describes an air cushion landing system (ACLS) applied to the 3,000 lb Jindivik Mk 3A unmanned aircraft. The ACLS is stowed for cruise flight in a clean aerodynamic fairing on the underfuselage, resulting in a minimum performance degradation. For recovery, hinged clam-shell type doors are unlatched, and open, permitting inflation/deployment of an inelastic type elongated toroid-shaped trunk. The trunk is inflated and blown with bleed air tapped off an existing port on the Jindivik's Viper Mk 201 engine. After landing, the aircraft is placed on a fixture and the trunk is manually restowed in the fairing. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the performance of an Air Cushion Landing System (ACLS) on a one-tenth scale model of a CC-115 Canadian aircraft is discussed. Several different types of tests were conducted on an extended version of the ACLS trunk at simulated fullscale trunk pressures of 315 psfg, out of ground effect, and 342 psfg, in ground effect. Cushion pressure was 160 psfg, in ground effect, during hover. The experiments involved: vertical drop tests to measure the effects of sink rate and initial attitude between full- sclae sink rates of 3.0 and 12.5 fps, and attitudes of pitch and roll from 0.0 to 12.0 and 0.0 to 7.5 degrees, respectively; static equilibrium tests to measure vertical stiffness, roll stiffness, pitch stiffness, and floor pressure exerted by the ACLS with loads up to 4.1 times the aircraft landing weight; and braking tests to obtain the effects of changing brake pillow thickness between simulated full-scale heights of 0.0 inches and 26.0 inches.
