Book excerpt: The current scarcity of expert systems where the reasoning is based on Bayesian probability theory may be due to misconceptions about probabilities found in the literature. As argued by Cheeseman (1985), these misconceptions have led to the attitude: "The Bayesian approach doesn't work - so here is a new scheme". Several of these expert systems based on ad hoc "probability" concepts have been successful in a number of ways, demonstrating the necessity of being able to handle uncertainty in medical expert systems. They also demonstrate the need for a theoretically sound handling of uncertainty. In Andersen et al. (1986) it was postulated that knowledge organized in a causal network can be used for a unified approach to the main tasks of a medical expert system: diagnosis, planning of tests and explanations. The present paper explores this postulate in a causal probabilistic network. It also provides a practical demonstration that the problems supposedly associated with probabilistic networks are either non-existent or that practical solutions can be found. This paper reports on the methods implemented in MUNIN* -an expert system for electromyography (EMG) (Andreassen et al. 1987). EMG is the diagnosis of muscle and nerve diseases through analysis of bioelectrical signals from muscle and nerve tissue. In Andreassen et al.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second European Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine followed the successful meeting in Marseilles in 1987. As for AIME 87, the goal of AIME 89 was to promote scientific interchange within and between all subfields of AI in medicine, among researchers from all over the world, and especially from Europe. There were sessions on: knowledge elicidation and acquisition, architectures for medical knowledge-based systems, clinical applications, methodology, reasoning based on physiological models, and uncertainty. It is clear form the quality of papers presented, that the rate of development which took place between the Pavia meeting of 1985 and AIME 87 has been well maintained. With the launch of the European Community's exploratory programme in Advanced Informatics in Medicine in Europe, 1989 is clearly a very important year for this discipline. AIME 89 provided an important forum which demonstrated progress in some of the more difficult methodological problems, and advances in the application of these techniques to real-world medicine. This volume should be consulted by anyone who wishes to appreciate the state of the art in Medical AI in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posthumanism is both a descriptive and a prescriptive term. Firstly, it registers a shift beginning in the late 1960s and epitomized by Foucault's “the death of Man”. Secondly, it refers to the future and a new relationship with the non-human, along with a different understanding of human exceptionalism. In Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future, Zahi Zalloua interrogates this future and shows that “post-” does not necessarily mean 'after' or that what comes after is more advanced than what has gone before. He pursues this line of inquiry across four distinct, yet interrelated, figures: cyborgs, animals, objects, and racialized and excluded 'others'. These figures disrupt the narrative of the 'human' and its singularity and by reading them together, Zalloua determines that it is only when posthumanist discourse is combined with psychoanalysis that subjectivity can be properly examined.

Book excerpt: The 33rd Annual Meeting of the German Association for Medical Documentation, Informatics and Statistics was combined with a Special Topic Conference of the European Federation for Medical Informatics and takes place at Hannover, F. R. of Germany, from September 26 to 29, 1988. It was planned and initililly prepared by the late Prof. P. L Reichertz, who headed the Hannover institute from 1969 to 1987. To commemorate his contribution to the development of medicine the conference was devoted to him "Peter Reichertz Memorial Conference on Expert Systems and Decision Support in Medicine" Since computers in the early Fifties were first applied to support medical reasoning, various phases of euphoria and resi~ation have . followed. Every new methodology which became technically possible was and will be applied to the old questlon of how to diagnose diseases more reliably. Artificial Intelligence is just one new approach to the old challenge. Over the years some· authors have been very optimistic and put forward opinions which motivated the common press to coin the phrase 'Dr. med. computer'. Papers printed under this heading rebuffed the majority of physiCians for many years. Today we know that medical decision making is a most complex buman performance. And 30 years of research on decision support have given us only limited insight into the underlying processes. Most of the principal methodological questions were already asked very early on.

Book excerpt: his volume of the series Lecture Notes in Medical Informatics contains the T proceedings of the Workshop on System Engineering in Medicine, which was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, 16-18 March 1989. This workshop was sponsored by the EC under the framework of the Medical and Health Research Programme. The aim of the workshop was to assess whether there was sufficient support in the Medical Informatics community in the EC to establish a concerted action. This proceedings contain papers of the presentations given at the workshop. These presentations were centred around three themes: • Methods and Tools • Applications in the domains of chronic care and critical care • Evaluation of decision support systems The papers were prepared after the workshop and therefore we were able to include the relevant parts of the discussions which were related to the presentations. As a result of the discussions during the workshop, a proposal was prepared for the establishment of a concerted action, specifically addressing the development of guidelines for the evaluation of medical decision aids. This proposal was granted early 1990 under the same Medical and Health Research programme of the EC. Over 40 institutes are participating in this concerted action. It have been the outstanding presentations and the open discussions at the workshop that have been the starting point of this concerted action. The papers in this proceedings formed a starting point for the discussions in the meetings of the concerted action.

The first main part of the book introduces some of the general problems dealt with in research. The second part is devoted to case studies; each presentation in this category has a well-delineated application problem and an analyzed solution based on an uncertainty formalism. The final part reports on developments of uncertainty formalisms and supporting technology, such as automated reasoning systems, that are vital to making these formalisms applicable. The book ends with a useful subject index. There is considerable synergy between the papers presented. The representative collection of case studies and associated techniques make the volume a particularly coherent and valuable resource. It will be indispensable reading for researchers and professionals interested in the application of uncertainty formalisms as well as for newcomers to the topic.

Book excerpt: Although there has been much progress in developing theories, models and systems in the areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Vision Processing (VP) there has up to now been little progress on integrating these two subareas of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This book contains a set of edited papers on recent advances in the theories, computational models and systems of the integration of NLP and VP. The volume includes original work of notable researchers: Alex Waibel outlines multimodal interfaces including studies in speech, gesture and points; eye-gaze, lip motion and facial expression; hand writing, face recognition, face tracking and sound localization in a connectionist framework. Antony Cohen and John Gooday use spatial relations to describe visual languages. Naoguki Okada considers intentions of agents in visual environments. In addition to these studies, the volume includes many recent advances from North America, Europe and Asia demonstrating the fact that integration of Natural Language Processing and Vision is truly an international challenge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: textbook. Basic description is attempted, and the bibliography has been specifically chosen to guide the reader toward a fuller treatment of his special ised interests. No fully satisfactory term has yet emerged to describe the processing of minerals, which is also called "ore dressing", "mineral dressing", "mineral engineering" and, in the University of London degree course "mineral technology". The dressing of ores was an excellent description of the older processes which aimed to break down rock to appropriate sizes, grade it, and separate the heavy fraction from the light one in each grade or size by gravity methods. The work done in the mill today goes far beyond these simple operations, and requires some knowledge of physical chemistry, particularly the branches which deal with the physics and chemistry of surfaces and of the interphase between solid particle and the surrounding liquid. At the same time, the engineer must not become so absorbed in the study of fundamental and applied technology as a physico-chemical science that he overlooks the mechanical, economic, and humanistic aspects oli his work. He is an engineer, a chemist, a physicist, and an administrator and, as such, should have a sound scientifj. c and cultural education. Technically, his work is to extract the valuable minerals from the ore sent to his mill; economically, it is to balance all the financial costs and returns in such a way as to ensure the maximum profit from the operation.

Book excerpt: These are the songs that we have listened to, laughed to, loved to and laboured to, as well as downed tools and danced to. Covering the last seven decades, Stuart Maconie looks at the songs that have sound tracked our changing times, and – just sometimes – changed the way we feel. Beginning with Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’, a song that reassured a nation parted from their loved ones by the turmoil of war, and culminating with the manic energy of ‘Bonkers’, Dizzee Rascal’s anthem for the push and rush of the 21st century inner city, The People’s Songs takes a tour of our island’s pop music, and asks what it means to us. This is not a rock critique about the 50 greatest tracks ever recorded. Rather, it is a celebration of songs that tell us something about a changing Britain during the dramatic and kaleidoscopic period from the Second World War to the present day. Here are songs about work, war, class, leisure, race, family, drugs, sex, patriotism and more, recorded in times of prosperity or poverty. This is the music that inspired haircuts and dance crazes, but also protest and social change. The companion to Stuart Maconie’s landmark Radio 2 series, The People’s Songs shows us the power of ‘cheap’ pop music, one of Britain’s greatest exports. These are the songs we worked to and partied to, and grown up and grown old to – from ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ to ‘Rehab', ‘She Loves You’ to ‘Star Man’, ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’ to ‘Radio Ga Ga’.
