Book excerpt: The current scarcity of expert systems where the reasoning is based on Bayesian probability theory may be due to misconceptions about probabilities found in the literature. As argued by Cheeseman (1985), these misconceptions have led to the attitude: "The Bayesian approach doesn't work - so here is a new scheme". Several of these expert systems based on ad hoc "probability" concepts have been successful in a number of ways, demonstrating the necessity of being able to handle uncertainty in medical expert systems. They also demonstrate the need for a theoretically sound handling of uncertainty. In Andersen et al. (1986) it was postulated that knowledge organized in a causal network can be used for a unified approach to the main tasks of a medical expert system: diagnosis, planning of tests and explanations. The present paper explores this postulate in a causal probabilistic network. It also provides a practical demonstration that the problems supposedly associated with probabilistic networks are either non-existent or that practical solutions can be found. This paper reports on the methods implemented in MUNIN* -an expert system for electromyography (EMG) (Andreassen et al. 1987). EMG is the diagnosis of muscle and nerve diseases through analysis of bioelectrical signals from muscle and nerve tissue. In Andreassen et al.

Firstly, it registers a shift beginning in the late 1960s and epitomized by Foucault's “the death of Man”. In Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future, Zahi Zalloua interrogates this future and shows that “post-” does not necessarily mean 'after' or that what comes after is more advanced than what has gone before. He pursues this line of inquiry across four distinct, yet interrelated, figures: cyborgs, animals, objects, and racialized and excluded 'others'. These figures disrupt the narrative of the 'human' and its singularity and by reading them together, Zalloua determines that it is only when posthumanist discourse is combined with psychoanalysis that subjectivity can be properly examined.

Every new methodology which became technically possible was and will be applied to the old questlon of how to diagnose diseases more reliably. Artificial Intelligence is just one new approach to the old challenge. Over the years some· authors have been very optimistic and put forward opinions which motivated the common press to coin the phrase 'Dr. med. computer'. Papers printed under this heading rebuffed the majority of physiCians for many years. Today we know that medical decision making is a most complex buman performance. And 30 years of research on decision support have given us only limited insight into the underlying processes. Most of the principal methodological questions were already asked very early on.

This workshop was sponsored by the EC under the framework of the Medical and Health Research Programme. The aim of the workshop was to assess whether there was sufficient support in the Medical Informatics community in the EC to establish a concerted action. This proceedings contain papers of the presentations given at the workshop. These presentations were centred around three themes: • Methods and Tools • Applications in the domains of chronic care and critical care • Evaluation of decision support systems The papers were prepared after the workshop and therefore we were able to include the relevant parts of the discussions which were related to the presentations. As a result of the discussions during the workshop, a proposal was prepared for the establishment of a concerted action, specifically addressing the development of guidelines for the evaluation of medical decision aids. This proposal was granted early 1990 under the same Medical and Health Research programme of the EC. Over 40 institutes are participating in this concerted action. It have been the outstanding presentations and the open discussions at the workshop that have been the starting point of this concerted action. The papers in this proceedings formed a starting point for the discussions in the meetings of the concerted action.

The work done in the mill today goes far beyond these simple operations, and requires some knowledge of physical chemistry, particularly the branches which deal with the physics and chemistry of surfaces and of the interphase between solid particle and the surrounding liquid. At the same time, the engineer must not become so absorbed in the study of fundamental and applied technology as a physico-chemical science that he overlooks the mechanical, economic, and humanistic aspects oli his work. He is an engineer, a chemist, a physicist, and an administrator and, as such, should have a sound scientifj. c and cultural education. Technically, his work is to extract the valuable minerals from the ore sent to his mill; economically, it is to balance all the financial costs and returns in such a way as to ensure the maximum profit from the operation.
