About 40 percent of the Soviet population resides in rural areas, com pared with about 25 percent in the United States. The civilian labor force of the - roughly 135 million (5) - exceeds that of the United States by about 50 percent. Thus, the Soviet Union has somewhat over half of its people in the labor force, compared with 43 percent for the United States. Also, the proportion of women in the labor force is higher than the 40 percent in the United States. About half of all workers and employees in the ussr. Are women. These differences in the labor forces in the two countries are probably due in large measure to agricultural employment. Over a fourth of the Soviet labor force is engaged in agriculture, com pared with only 4 percent ih the United States. Also, women account for about 15 percent of those engaged in agriculture in the United States, com pared with about 45 percent in the ussr. How ever, the number of nonagricultural workers engaged in activities in support of agricultural workers is much greater in the United States than in the Soviet Union.
