This new wealth has affected all sectors of the economy and especially the agricultural sector; there have been considerable movements of population, changes in the use of land, and, possibly most important, there has been a profound change in the expectations of the Libyan people. Agriculture was the major contributor to GDP before oil and even in 1968 it was still the major sector in terms of employment, occupying 32 per cent of the employed population; as such it has always been given prominence in government planning. This study begins by introducing the major economic and geographical features relevant to agricultural development and examines the extension of agricultural activity in the twentieth century, prior to independence in 1951. The later chapters deal with the changes which have taken place since the discovery of oil with respect to land use in all parts of Libya, and deals in detail with agricultural investment and wages. First published in 1973.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Libya has been one of the most remarkable of the Arab oil producers. It has combined an aggressive foreign policy, a domestic political revolution and extraordinary economic growth over the last decade. This book focuses on the development of the Libyan economy over this period. In the boom years of the oil market Libya’s revenues exploded. With the current decline of Arab oil revenues many of the projects undertaken then now look less realistic. The book surveys both the structural developments in the Libyan economy and the experience of individual sectors. It considers the potential for industrial development and the prospects for agriculture both in terms of natural resources and political commitments. The book also examines developments in the service sector, especially banking. Although it recognises the acute problems of the Libyan economy, the book is broadly optimistic for prospects through to the year 2000. First published in 1987.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of agricultural infrastructure to the development of organic farming in Libya is receiving considerable attention from policy makers in view of its potential in contributing to economic development. There is a vital role for agricultural infrastructure in promoting organic farming development in Libya. This would increase employment, enhance general economic development and stimulate growth in other sectors. Agricultural infrastructure alreacy contributes to the general development of Libyan agriculture, and it may be vital to improving sustainability. Despite growing research interest in agriculture in Libya, there is still work to be done to bring the relationship of infrastructure and organic farming development into focus. In order to understand better the role that infrastructure plays in the development of agriculture and transformation to organic farming. This research draws on agricultural development theory to enhance understanding on the relationship between agricultural infrastructure and transformation to organic farming in Libya. Particular attention is paid to the historical development of agriculture in Libya and the role politics played in shaping agricultural development and resultant policy initiatives. The empirical focus of the research is on three main agricultural regions in Libya. This study argues that despite the fact that organic farming is in its embryonic stages in Libya, there is the potential to transform agricultural practices to facilitate organic farming if the constraints of availability and accessibility associated with current agricultural infrastructure especially at the regional and farm levels are given adequate attention with the involvement of all stakeholders including farmers. Interviews with ten agricultural experts provide a range of insights into the issues associated with infrastructure and agricultural development. A variety of issues and constraints which serve as barriers to agricultural development in Libya were identified from data collected from 277 farmers through questionnaires. The research highlights the importance of availability and accessibility· of agricultural infrastructure to the transformation to organic farming in Libya. There is inadequate and inappropriate infrastructure especially at the farm level to promote the development of organic III farming practices. A variety of suggestions is presented on ways to improve the development of agriculture in Libya. This includes a suggestion for closer collaboration among all stakeholders in the agricultural sector so that the provision of agricultural infrastructure will be at the preferred areas to maximize their utilisation. This will require improved communication among all stakeholders in the planning and implementation of agricultural policies. The research highlights the importance of availability and accessibility of financial assistance to farmers as well as the provision of food processing plant. The research shows that there is potential to enhance organic farming development in Libya and has demonstrated the importance of agricuituralinfrastructure to this process. IV.

Book excerpt: This report first describes the context of the agriculture sector in Libya and in the south of the country, the impact of the ongoing conflict in the country since 2011 and of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the specific configuration of the sectors in the south of the country. Secondly, it describes the main challenges in the value chains and added value of selected major crops cultivated in the south of Libya, providing an analysis and assessment of the cooperatives and associations in the region with significant involvement and participation of women. This publication presents a holistics analysis and assessment of the value chains in Libya, particularly in the South where various agricultural crops are produced, including cereals and grains, fruits, and vegetables. The majority of the area cultivated for these agricultural commodities was given over to vegetables in Wahat (57 percent of this area), Murzuq (57 percent), Ubari (42 percent) and Wadi Etba (57 percent). The majority was used for fruits in Albwanis (88 percent), Kufra (70 percent), Sabha (74 percent) and Sharqiya (64 percent). Finally, the majority was used for cereals and grains in Ghat (59 percent), Qatrun (79 percent), Traghan (61 percent) and Wadi Shati (52 percent). In addition to the significant area cultivated and significant quantities produced of these selected crops in the region, this publication, based on the data gathered on agricultural production, alongside certain other factors and reasons, 16 crops have been selected for the evaluation and characterization of their value chains and added value.
