Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Water Development Outlook charts progress in water security in Asia and the Pacific over the past 5 years. This 2016 edition of the report uses the latest available data to assess water security in five key dimensions: household access to piped potable water and improved sanitation, economic water security, providing better urban water services to build more livable cities, restoring healthy rivers and ecosystems, and resilience to water disasters. The region shows a positive trend in strengthening water security since the 2013 edition of the report, when 38 out of 49 countries were assessed as water-insecure. In 2016, that number dropped to 29 out of 48 countries. This study was supported by ADB’s Water Financing Partnership Facility.

Book Synopsis Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture by : Hiroshan Hettiarachchi
Download or read book Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture written by Hiroshan Hettiarachchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a broad and global level description of the current status of wastewater use in agriculture and then brings the readers to various places in the MENA Region and Europe to explain how some countries and regions have addressed the challenges during implementation. On a global scale, over 20 million hectares of agricultural land are irrigated using wastewater. This is one good, and perhaps the most prominent, example of the safe use potential of wastewater. Water scarcity and the cost of energy and fertilisers are among the main factors driving millions of farmers and other entrepreneurs to make use of wastewater. In order to address the technical, institutional, and policy challenges of safe water reuse, developing countries and countries in transition need clear institutional arrangements and more skilled human resources, with a sound understanding of the opportunities and potential risks of wastewater use. Stakeholders in wastewater irrigation who need to implement from scratch or improve current conditions, find it difficult to gather the necessary information on practical implementation aspects. The main objective of this book is to bridge that gap.
Book Synopsis Scaling up inclusive innovations in agrifood chains in Asia and the Pacific by : Gálvez, E.
Download or read book Scaling up inclusive innovations in agrifood chains in Asia and the Pacific written by Gálvez, E. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication looks at innovations happening at all stages of the food value chain: from production to manufacturing and retailing. This also includes the extended value chain, for example input supply, financial services and agribusiness support services. Yields are improving and primary production is becoming more resilient as a result of digital technologies such as precision agriculture, agricultural drones, and digital farming services and marketplaces; and novel business models such as plant factories, crowdsourcing for farmers. Data and robotics help lift productivity and food safety in the manufacturing process. Online grocery commerce and food delivery services are revolutionizing the way consumers purchase food. Distributed ledger technology, such as blockchain, allows making payments and tracing back food products along the chain in order to increase transparency and trust. New business models are springing up to shorten the chain by removing or shifting stages and to make it fairer and greener, stimulated by enabling technologies and changing customer behaviours. Innovations such as these are discussed and illustrated by almost 200 practical examples from 21 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, across various types of firms and commodities. By observing emerging trends and providing concrete examples, the book discusses the nature of these innovations, how they are affecting food systems and value chains, positively or negatively, and how to deal with trade-offs. It concludes with a reflection on the impacts of these innovations, the policy solutions identified, and lessons learned to future-proof the region’s food systems, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Book Synopsis Thinking about Water Differently by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Thinking about Water Differently written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water–food–energy nexus is emerging as a critical issue in Asia and the Pacific. It is clear that solutions must be found to assure water security, thereby eliminating the immediate---and increasing---risk to food security, energy security, and economic growth and stability: water must be recognized as an economic as well as a social good. Governments need to be encouraged to think differently about water, take the longer-term view, and be mindful of the strategic and economic value of this limited resource. This publication is the result of a scoping study initiated by the Asian Development Bank to better understand the issues associated with the water–food–energy nexus in Asia and the Pacific. It provides high-level guidance on the choices available to address the region's water security issues.

Book Synopsis Metropolitan Water Use Conflicts In Asia And The Pacific by : James E. Nickum
Download or read book Metropolitan Water Use Conflicts In Asia And The Pacific written by James E. Nickum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Asia is the least urbanized continent, it contains half of the world’s megacities and many of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Urban growth is already stressing local water supplies and causing intense conflict among water users—between haves and have-nots in urban areas as well as between farmers and fishers outside the cities. In addition, concern is growing over the depletion and degradation of water sources and over the impact of water policies and patterns of water use on the natural environment. From the perspective of the maturing metropolitan water economy, the contributors to this volume consider the problems of urban water management in the region. They focus on the institutional and policy dimensions of conflict and seek to provide a range of viable options for reducing the growing frictions among water users. Eight specific case studies of urban areas in Asia and the Pacific span a wide range of economic levels of development, physical settings, and hydrological conditions. The book will be of interest to scholars and policymakers concerned with issues of water and environmental policy, urban management, and resource conflict in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Water Development Outlook (AWDO) 2020 assesses national water security across Asia and the Pacific, focusing on five key dimensions: rural, economic, urban, environmental, and water-related disaster. Despite considerable achievements in Asia and the Pacific since the AWDO 2013 edition, 1.5 billion people in rural areas and 0.6 billion in urban areas still lack adequate water supply and sanitation. Sound water management and access to reliable service delivery remain vital to inclusive economic growth and social well-being, especially after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This edition includes two new sections highlighting the importance of finance and governance to water security as well as case studies demonstrating how the AWDO has influenced policy development in four countries.
