This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed regional free trade agreement (FTA) being negotiated among the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. U.S. negotiators and others describe and envision the TPP as a "comprehensive and high-standard" FTA that aims to liberalize trade in nearly all goods and services and include rules-based commitments beyond those currently established in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The broad outline of an agreement was announced on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial in November 2011, in Honolulu, HI. If concluded as envisioned, the TPP potentially could eliminate tariff and nontariff barriers to trade and investment among the parties and could serve as a template for a future trade pact among APEC members and potentially other countries. Congress has a direct interest in the negotiations, both through influencing U.S. negotiating positions with the executive branch, and by considering legislation to implement any resulting agreement.

Book Synopsis Local Food Systems; Concepts, Impacts, and Issues by : Steve Martinez
Download or read book Local Food Systems; Concepts, Impacts, and Issues written by Steve Martinez and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.
Book Synopsis Farm Economic Issues by : Denise L. Sandrino
Download or read book Farm Economic Issues written by Denise L. Sandrino and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farm economics remains a major concern for policymakers as it has been in the past. On the other hand, the farms in America constituted one of its main levers of power besides the military. Policies must encourage innovation in one sense, yet be ready to lend support just in the event of regional weather disasters or national economics trends adverse to agriculture. This new book presents a comprehensive picture of these current issues. Contents: Preface; Farm Economic Relief: Issues and Options for Congress; US Farm Income: Recent National and Regional Changes and the Federal Response; Farm and Food Support under USDA's Section 32 Program; Farm Labour Shortages and Immigration Policy; Farm Support Programs and World Trade Commitments; Farm Disaster Assistance; Federal Farm Promotion ('Check-Off') Programs; Farm 'Counter-Cyclical Assistance'; Farm Program Spending: What's Permitted under the Uruguay Round Agreements; Index.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on International Trade by : Elton V. Smith
Download or read book Perspectives on International Trade written by Elton V. Smith and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some may dispute that economics is the driving force behind much of history, nobody can argue that trade is not a significant factor in international relations. In an increasingly globalised world, products are perpetually crossing borders, leading to both political and fiscal conflicts. Businesses have to face diverse markets and regions while worrying about protectionist government initiatives that hamper free trade. Even the ostensible champion of free markets, America, has its own streak of inhibiting the flow of goods; witness the recent steel tariffs which have angered European partners. No society, therefore, is immune to the pressures of world trade and the need to balance the free movement of products with the desire to preserve domestic industries. This book assembles a collection of articles examining some of the most current and divisive issues in the international trade arena. They range from the tensions between the United States and Mexico in NAFTA to the war-fuelled trade in diamonds in Africa. With such a broad range of issues discussed, this book serves as a needed tool for understanding the most important contemporary economic subjects.

Book Synopsis Regional Trade Agreements and the Multilateral Trading System by : Rohini Acharya
Download or read book Regional Trade Agreements and the Multilateral Trading System written by Rohini Acharya and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of studies examining trade-related issues negotiated in regional trade agreements (RTAs) and how RTAs are related to the WTO's rules. While previous work has focused on subsets of RTAs, these studies are based on what is probably the largest dataset used to date, and highlight key issues that have been negotiated in all RTAs notified to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). New rules within RTAs are compared to rules agreed upon by WTO members. The extent of their divergences and the potential implications for parties to RTAs, as well as for WTO members that are not parties to RTAs, are examined. This volume makes an important contribution to the current debate on the role of the WTO in regulating international trade and how WTO rules relate to new rules being developed by RTAs.
