Book Synopsis Making Cooperatives Work by : Ruerd Ruben
Download or read book Making Cooperatives Work written by Ruerd Ruben and published by Cedla. This book was released on 1999 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several decades of agrarian reform in Honduras resulted in the creation of an important number of agricultural production cooperatives. While agrarian co-operation meets increasing criticism, this book offers a comprehensive appraisal of the internal "rationality" of maintaining the cooperative framework, especially when market and institutional failures persist. Making use of modern transaction costs, economics and contract choice theory, it is demonstrated that operational efficiency and prospects for sustainable land management can still be guaranteed. The author offers a detailed analysis of rules and mechanisms used by cooperative members to enforce transparent contractual arrangements, and indicates several pathways for the consolidation of cooperative enterprises. Major attention is given to access to information, labour monitoring procedures, and payment systems as devices for mutual insurance. The book provides an excellent example of application of the New Institutional Economics approach on rural development issues in Latin America.

Book Synopsis Agricultural Cooperatives In Transition by : Csaba Csaki
Download or read book Agricultural Cooperatives In Transition written by Csaba Csaki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this is a study of agricultural co-operatives. The farming structure in transition countries has shifted from dominance of large corporate farms to family smallholdings. Smallholders everywhere experience difficulties with access to market services, including sale of products, purchase of inputs, and acquisition of machinery; they suffer from credit shortages and have limited access to information and advisory services. The barriers to market access prevent smallholders from fully exploiting their inherent productivity advantages. Best-practice world experience highlights farmers' service cooperatives, created by grassroots users, as the most effective way of improving the market access of small farmers. Service cooperatives also help smallholders overcome market failures, when private business entrepreneurs are unwilling to provide services in areas that they judge unprofitable or unfairly exploit users through monopolistic practices. These difficulties and market failures are prominent in transition countries and scholars accordingly expected rapid development of agricultural service cooperatives in response to smallholder needs. The present volume explores gaps between expectations and reality.

Book excerpt: "Land Reform, Land settlement and cooperatives" continues to play an important role in land tenure and rural development studies and more specifically as part of FAO's programmes since its first publication in 1963. In the last decade, the issue of good governance, new institutional structures and methodological approaches offering a wider perspective have become important elements of the debate. The articles in this volume reflect this in a variety of ways.

Book Synopsis Grabbing Power by : Tanya M. Kerssen
Download or read book Grabbing Power written by Tanya M. Kerssen and published by Food First Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grabbing Power explores the history of agribusiness and land conflicts in Northern Honduras focusing on the Aguán Valley, where peasant movements battle large palm oil producers for the right to land. In the wake of a military coup that overthrew Honduran president Manuel Zelaya in June 2009, rural communities in the Aguán have been brutally repressed, with over 60 people killed in just over two years. United States military aid--spent in the name of the War on Drugs--fuels the Honduran government's ability to repress its people. A strong and inspiring movement for land, food and democracy has grown over the last two years, and it shows no sign of backing down.
