Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of biomedical research on aging is to prolong the useful and active lives of the elderly and to raise the quality of their lives. That can be accomplished if we understand the normal process of aging, the nature of diseases common to the aged, and the sources of and remedies for many of the painful disabilities suffered by the aged. The major systems within the body fail at different rates, depending upon the inherited characteristics and environmental experiences of the individual. One goal of biomedical research is to characterize, for the various organ systems of the body, the progressive loss of functions with age. Biomedical research on aging can be divided into three major areas: basic biological aspects of aging, the interaction of aging and disease, and the interaction of external, or environmental, influences and aging. Important elements in research on aging include: experimental model systems, the study of human populations, studies of alteration of life span, and resources and training needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of a well received book that reviews classical epidemiological and clinical research designs, with a specific focus on aging. Chapters cover basic topics like the scientific method, ethics, and the consequences of certain exclusion criteria. The work also includes a look at clinical concepts like multimorbidity, frailty and functionality. New material includes chapters such as geroscience, health systems research, big data and data mining, financing and future of aging research. The authors reveal the issues and challenges for researchers of age and aging, and also consider, from basic to clinical, and from clinical to public policies of social and health care. The focus on aging is what gives this book its valuable perspective on research methodology. All authors have considerable experience in aging, geriatrics or gerontology, and each chapter includes both a theoretical framework and practical examples of studies in aging. Readers will discover study designs that are reviewed for basic structure, main flaws and advantages, and are analyzed for specific conditions and variables regarding aging. This text is suited to both health care professionals caring for older adults, and researchers who are new to research in aging. It is relevant across the disciplines, including medicine, psychology, social sciences and dentistry, and it supports learning with graphs and figures.

Book excerpt: The maintenance of optimal musculoskeletal health is increasingly recognized as a key element for promoting overall health and fostering independent living in advanced age. Growing evidence indicates that nutrition, together with an active lifestyle, plays a central role in supporting musculoskeletal health both aging and in the setting of specific disease conditions. This Special Issue of Nutrients, entitled "Nutrition for Musculoskeletal Health", includes original research and review contributions highlighting the relevance of nutrition to musculoskeletal health during aging and in the context of specific diseases. The overarching theme of the Special Issue is addressed through a multidisciplinary set of articles embracing clinical, basic science, and translational studies.

Book excerpt: According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 years or over in the world is projected to be 1.4 billion in 2030 and 2.1 billion in 2050. Endocrinologists and other clinicians face the challenge of caring for the elderly. To do so, they need to incorporate geriatric principles into their clinical practice. Endocrinology of Aging: Clinical Aspects in Diagrams and Images presents chapters in a way that allows the reader to incorporate concepts and main facts of complex subjects in a visual way. As the global population becomes older, the need for a deeper understanding of geriatric pathology increases, and with it, the access to educational resources for the endocrinology and metabolism of aging. Chapters divided according to specific endocrine and metabolic systems, providing evidence-based content regarding what is known about the function of endocrine and metabolic systems altered during the aging process Addresses physiological changes that alter the pathophysiology of the clinical picture, explaining the characteristic pathological expressions of hormonal and metabolic disorders in the advanced age Editors and authors are clinical endocrinologists, geriatricians, internists and endocrine surgeons, with extensive global experience in clinical and experimental gerontology Considers the patient transitioning from young adult to elderly, discussing the endocrinological challenge to discern physiology from pathology Focuses on age as an essential factor for diagnostic and endocrine management Includes many pictures and diagrams, making it a user-friendly reference guide for practicing physicians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the century the average life span in developed societies was less than 50 years. It is now more than 70 years and will continue to increase in the near future. Aging is a challenge to science and society. There are several theories of aging. The programmed aging hypothesis suggests that aging cannot be altered by any external influence, that aging is programmed from the beginning of life until the end of senescence. Another theory is based on genetic instability, with repair processes correcting errors in the cells that cause aging. Aging processes manifest themselves at the molecular and cellular level, in different organs, and in the whole organism. Most older persons acquire multiple diseases, primarily chronic ones. The multimorbidity of the elderly raises many questions as to nutrition, metabolism, immunity, drug therapy, and rehabilitation. Nutrition may be able to intervene in the aging process. Aging is associated with dec lining immunity and reduced resistance to many diseases, and it is pos sible that nutritional changes in old age contribute to the declining immunity in the elderly. The elderly take 40% of the prescription drugs in Germany and adverse drug reactions are more frequent in geriatric patients. There are not only problems in drug therapy for elderly pa tients, but also in their rehabilitation. The aim of rehabilitation is the restoration of geriatric patients to their former functional and environ mental status.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are living longer than ever before. For many, though, these extra years have become a bitter gift, marred by dementia, disability, and loss of independence. Extending Life, Enhancing Life sets the course toward practical solutions to these problems by specifying 15 research priorities in five key areas of investigation: Basic biomedicine-To understand the fundamental processes of aging. Clinical-To intervene against common disabilities and maladies of older persons. Behavioral and social-To build on past successes with behavioral and social interventions. Health services delivery-To seek answers to the troubling issues of insufficient delivery of health care in the face of increasing health care costs. Biomedical ethics-To clarify underlying ethical guidelines about life and death decisions. Most important, the volume firmly establishes the connection between research and its beneficial results for the quality of life for older persons.
