Book excerpt: Mobile agents are intelligent agents with advanced mobility capabilities. A mobile agent must be provided with the so called strong mobility, a feature which allows it to carry its status with it and accomplish its mission by migrating from site to site in the Internet. A mobile agent can complete in a site what it started in another site.Starting from the mobile agent concept, this book provides the reader with a suitably detailed discussion on mobile agent principles of operation, as for instance, migration, communication, co-ordination, interoperability, fault tolerance and security. As an example of mobile agents application fields, this book discusses how they can be effective in implementing data mining and information retrieval systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile agents refer to self-contained and identi?able computer programs that can move within the network and can act on behalf of the user or another entity. Most of the current research work on the mobile agent paradigm has two general goals: reduction of network traf?c and asynchronous interaction. These two goals stem directly from the desire to reduce information overload and to ef?ciently use network resources. There are certainly many motivations for the use of a mobile agent paradigm; h- ever, intelligent information retrieval, network and mobility management, and network services are currently the three most cited application targets for a mobile agent system. The aim of the workshop is to provide a unique opportunity for researchers, software and application developers, and computer network technologists to discuss new dev- opments in the mobile agent technology and applications. After last year’s very successful workshop in Ottawa, Canada (110 attendees), this year’s workshop will focus on mobile agent issues across the areas of network m- agement, mobile applications, nomadic computing, e-commerce, ad-hoc networks and applications, feature interactions, Internet applications, QoS management, policybased management, interactive multimedia, and computer–telephony integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mobile agent system could be attacked by malicious agents, platforms and third parties. Mobile agents simply offer greater opportunities for abuse and misuse, which broadens the scale of threats significantly. In addition, since mobile agents have some unique characteristics such as their mobility, security problems have become more complicated in these systems. These security problems have become a bottleneck in the development and maintenance of mobile agent systems, especially in security sensitive applications such as electronic commerce. This book introduces the concept and structure of mobile agent systems and discusses various attacks and countermeasures. The emphasis is on the formal modeling and analysis of secure mobile agent systems and their applications. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (97 KB). Contents: Mobile Agent System; Attacks and Countermeasures of Software System Security; Security Issues in a Mobile Agent System; A New Formal Model OCo Extended Elementary Object System (EEOS); A Formal Framework of a Generic Secure Mobile Agent System Based on EEOS; Translating the EEOS Model to Colored Petri Net Model; Simulation and Analysis of the Extended Elementary Object System Model of a Secure Mobile Agent System; A Case Study in Electronic Commerce; A Case Study in E-Auction System. Readership: Computer scientists, researchers, software engineers, programmers and graduate students in software engineering, networking and automated systems."

Book excerpt: This book highlights new trends and challenges in agent systems, and new digital and knowledge economy research, and includes 34 papers on areas such as intelligent agent interaction and collaboration, modeling, simulation and mobile agents, agent communication and social networks, business Informatics, design and implementation of intelligent agents and multi-agent systems. These papers were presented at the 12th International KES Conference on Agents and Multi-Agent Systems: Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2018) held on Australia’s Gold Coast. The modern economy is driven by technologies and knowledge. Digital technologies can free, shift and multiply choices, often intruding on the space of other industries, by providing new ways of conducting business operations and creating values for customers and companies. The book addresses topics that contribute to the modern digital economy, including software agents, multi-agent systems, agent modeling, mobile and cloud computing, big data analysis, business intelligence, artificial intelligence, social systems, computer embedded systems and nature inspired manufacturing, which contribute to the modern digital economy. The results presented are of theoretical and practical value to researchers and industrial practitioners working in the fields of artificial intelligence, collective computational intelligence, innovative business models, new digital and knowledge economy and, in particular, agent and multi-agent systems, technologies, tools and applications.

At one end of the scale are relatively simple, client-based software applications that can assist users in performing mundane tasks such as sorting e-mail or downloading web pages. This class of agents is often referred to as “personal assistant” agents. At the other end of the scale is the concept of sophisticated software entities possessing artificial intelligence that autonomously travel through a network environment and make complex decisions on a user's behalf. In telecommunications, the definition lies somewhere between those two extremes. This classification of mobile agents, although not strictly adhering to the definition of “intelligent agents” originally proposed by the artificial intelligence community, is generally acknowledged to be a useful categorization and has started to gain widespread acceptance. We therefore define a mobile agent as a program that acts on behalf of a user or another program and is able to migrate from host to host on a network under its own control. The agent chooses when and where it will migrate and may interrupt its own execution and continue elsewhere on the network. The agent returns results and messages in an asynchronous fashion. This volume discusses the emerging field of mobile software agents and their applications to the area of telecommunications, such as active networks, e-commerce, the Internet, interactive QoS, network management, and feature interactions. It addresses the needs of a wide audience, including researchers, software agent systems and telecommunication applications designers, and users of software agents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seen by many as the next revolution in software development for large, complex, distributed systems, agent systems represent one of the more exciting research areas in computer science. With the development of powerful personal devices, the vision of a personal agent now seems increasingly appealing too. It can even be claimed that intelligent software agents will eventually become an essential part of Web 4.0. Software agents are finding their way into areas such as environmental security, climate change, seismic safety, epidemic prevention, detection and response, computer emergency response and human and societal dynamics. Because these are of direct interest to the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program, a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) dealing with the subject was held in Tangier, Morocco, in September 2010. This book presents the content of that ASI. This book is divided into three sections: Foundations, Applications and Student Papers. Subjects covered include agent system modeling, system design and experimentation, sensor networks, disaster management, ehealth and medical emergencies, management of UAVs and agents in the grid. Agent systems security and the application of agents in network security are also addressed and the final section includes participant presentations. The book has been designed to be usable as a textbook - for example, in a graduate course covering software agents, agent systems and their applications - and will be of interest to all those involved in related fields
