Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Agenda for Africa's Economic Renewal, ten experts from Africa, Europe, and the United States look beyond structural adjustment and identify the strategic elements that are needed to engineer Africa's economic recovery in the coming years. Starting from the considerable degree of consensus among policymakers and scholars about what ails African economies, the authors analyze the key choices that need to be made in the critical areas of agriculture, trade and industry, state capacity, and the social sectors. The authors consider these strategic priorities in the extremely fragile environment of democratic rule in many countries of the region, and they stress the long overdue need to focus directly on the political implications of economic policy choices.

Book excerpt: This study presents the findings of original field research into the design, practice, and varied outcomes of industrial policy in three sectors in Ethiopia: cement, leather and leather products, and floriculture. Given that there is a single industrial strategy, why do its outcomes vary across sectors? To what extent is this a function of the specific market and political economy features of each sector? The book examines industrial structures and associated global value chains to demonstrate the challenges faced by African firms in international markets.

Book Synopsis Our Continent, Our Future by : P. Thandika Mkandawire
Download or read book Our Continent, Our Future written by P. Thandika Mkandawire and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Continent, Our Future presents the emerging African perspective on this complex issue. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies, 25 of which were from African economists, to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country's unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent's development agenda.

Download or read book Africa in the Global Knowledge Economy written by Calestous Juma and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of Africa now depends largely on the nature and outlook of its economic vision and the realignment of national institutions to reflect major trends in global and regional economic affairs. Ongoing political reforms in Africa have coincided with the growing realisation that economic growth is mainly a result of the transformation of knowledge (expressed in the form of education, science and technology and the associated institutions) into goods and services. This paper provides elements of a strategic policy outlook for Africa's economic renewal and growth, emphasising the role of science, technology and innovation.

Book Synopsis Urbanization and Socio-Economic Development in Africa by : Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa
Download or read book Urbanization and Socio-Economic Development in Africa written by Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this book is to put urbanization and its challenges squarely on Africa’s development agenda. Planned urbanization can improve living conditions for the majority, help in the expansion of the middle class, and create conditions for economic transformation. However, many African cities have developed haphazardly, resulting in the decline of public services, in slum proliferation, and increases in poverty. African cities thrive on activities characterized by easy entry and low productivity, generally referred to as the "informal sector". Indeed, today some urban dwellers are poorer than their cousins in the countryside. In spite of reform attempts, many governments have not been able to create an enabling environment, with adequate infrastructure and institutions to sustain markets for easy exchange and production. This study argues that with careful policies and planning, the situation can be changed. If the recent natural resource-led economic boom that we have seen in many African countries is used for structural reforms and urban renewal, African cities could become centers of economic opportunity. The challenge for African policymakers is to ensure that urban development is orderly and that the process is inclusive and emphasizes the protection of the environment, hence green growth.
Book Synopsis West African Agriculture and Climate Change by : Abdulai Jalloh
Download or read book West African Agriculture and Climate Change written by Abdulai Jalloh and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of three books in IFPRI's climate change in Africa series, West African Agriculture and Climate Change: A Comprehensive Analysis examines the food security threats facing 11 of the countries that make up West Africa -- Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo -- and explores how climate change will increase the efforts needed to achieve sustainable food security throughout the region. West Africa's population is expected to grow at least through mid-century. The region will also see income growth. Both will put increased pressure on the natural resources needed to produce food, and climate change makes the challenges greater. West Africa is already experiencing rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increasing extreme events. Without attention to adaptation, the poor will suffer. Through the use of hundreds of scenario maps, models, figures, and detailed analysis, the editors and contributors of West African Agriculture and Climate Change present plausible future scenarios that combine economic and biophysical characteristics to explore the possible consequences for agriculture, food security, and resources management to 2050. They also offer recommendations to national governments and regional economic agencies already dealing with the vulnerabilities of climate change and deviations in environment. Decisionmakers and researchers will find West African Agriculture and Climate Change a vital tool for shaping policy and studying the various and likely consequences of climate change.
Book Synopsis Africa Rise Up! by : Chris Landsberg
Download or read book Africa Rise Up! written by Chris Landsberg and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From politics to economics, science and engineering, this book raises the bar on the debate about the place of Africa in the world. As Africa continues the search for relevance, influence, peace, progress, and stability in a highly competitive global system, 'Africa Rise Up!' interrogates the historical and contemporary forces, agency, and factors that combine to affect the location of the continent in the global order. The contributors argue for a paradigm shift in both theory and praxis of national, regional, and continental efforts geared toward the realization of the much-needed African Renaissance. The strength of this book lies in its interpretation of the African condition through the lens of African-centred epistemologies.
Book Synopsis Yearbook on the African Union Volume 1 (2020) by :
Download or read book Yearbook on the African Union Volume 1 (2020) written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edition of the Yearbook on the African Union. It is first and foremost an academic project that will provide an in-depth evaluation and analysis of the institution, its processes, and its engagements. Despite the increased agency in recent years of the African Union in general, and the AU Commission in particular, little is known – outside expert policy or niche academic circles – about the Union’s activities. This is the gap the Yearbook on the African Union wants to systematically bridge. It seeks to be a reference point for in-depth research, evidence-based policy-making and decision-making. Contributors are: Adekeye Adebajo, Habibu Yaya Bappah, Bruce Byiers, Annie Barbara Hazviyemurwi Chikwanha, Dawit Yohannes Wondemagegnehu, Katharina P.W. Döring, Jens Herpolsheimer, Jacob Lisakafu, Frank Mattheis, Henning Melber, Alphonse Muleefu, John N. Nkengasong, Edefe Ojomo, Awino Okech, Jamie Pring, Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Tim Zajontz.
Download or read book Vanguard or Vandals written by Jon Abbink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a range of original studies on one of the major challenges in Africa today: the controversial role of youth in politics, conflict and rebellious movements. The issue is not only the drafting of child soldiers into insurgent armies or predatory militias, as in Somalia, Sierra Leone or Congo, but, more generally, that of the problematic insertion of large numbers of young people in the socio-economic and political order of post-colonial Africa. Even educated youths are being confronted with a lack of opportunities, blocked social mobility, and despair about the future. African youth, while forming a numerical majority, largely feel excluded from power, are socio-economically marginalized, thwarted in their ambitions, and have little access to representative positions or political power.

Does it open infinite opportunities for economic growth, development and social transformation of the continent? It is the assertion of contributions to this collection that for Africa, globalisation is a counter-revolutionary movement that is stalling the drive of the continent's societies to transform themselves into developed and prosperous entities - just as slavery and colonialism. Included are contributions from eminent scholars such as Samir Amin, Horace Campbell, Thandika Mkandawire and Cyril Obi.
