Book Synopsis Wisdom and Chivalry by : Stephen Henry Rigby
Download or read book Wisdom and Chivalry written by Stephen Henry Rigby and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Knight's Tale" is one of the most controversial of all the Canterbury Tales. Does Chaucer portray Theseus, the duke of Athens whose actions dominate the tale, as an ideal ruler, one who is noble, wise and chivalrous, or does the duke's behaviour reveal him to be immoral, self-seeking and tyrannical? This book assesses the duke's conduct and thought in terms of the ideals set out in medieval mirrors for princes, particularly in Giles of Rome's "De Regimine Principum." It argues that, when judged by the standards of these works, Theseus can be seen as a model prince in terms of his self-government ('ethics'), his rule of his household ('economics'), his governance of his realm ('politics) and his cosmography and philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Supreme Yoga by : Swami Venkatesananda
Download or read book The Supreme Yoga written by Swami Venkatesananda and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yoga Vasistha has been a favourite book of spiritual seekers in India these several centuries. Its special appeal lies in its thoroughly rational approach, and in its presentation of Vedanta as a philosophy to bridge the gulf between the secular and the sacred, action and contemplation, in human life, through a comprehensive and lofty spirituality. This monumental scripture is the greatest help to the spiritual awakening and the direct experience of the Truth. This is certain. If this is what you want, you are welcome to the Yoga Vasistha. An oft-recurring expression in this scripture is kakataliya'-a crow alights on the coconut palm tree and at that very moment, a ripe coconut falls. The two unrelated events thus seem to be related in time and space, though there is no causal relationship. Such is life. Such is 'creation'. But the mind caught up in its own trap of logic questions why, invents a 'why' and a 'wherefore' to satisfy itself, conveniently ignoring the inconvenient questions that still haunt an intelligent mind. Vasistha demands direct observation of the mind, its motion, its notions, its reasoning, the assumed cause and the projected result, and even the observer, the observed and the observation-and the realization of their indivisible unity as the infinite consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instant bestseller: Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön shares life-changing practices for living with wisdom, confidence, and integrity amidst confusing situations and uncertain times We live in difficult times. Life so often seems like a turbulent river threatening to drown us and destroy our world. Why, then, shouldn’t we cling to the certainty of the comfortable—to our deep-seated habits and familiar ways? Because, Pema Chödrön teaches, that kind of fear-based clinging keeps us from the infinitely more powerful experience of being fully alive. The Buddhist teachings she presents here—known as the “Three Commitments”—provide a treasure trove of wisdom for learning to step right into the unknown, to completely and fearlessly embrace the groundlessness of being human, for people of all faiths. When we do, we begin to see not only how much better it feels to live an openhearted life, but we find that we begin to naturally and more effectively reach out to help and heal all those around us.

Book Synopsis End-of-Life Care Considerations for the Speech-Language Pathologist by : Helen Sharp
Download or read book End-of-Life Care Considerations for the Speech-Language Pathologist written by Helen Sharp and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucial role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in hospice and palliative settings receives a long-overdue focus in End-of-Life Care Considerations for the Speech-Language Pathologist, the fifth volume in Plural’s Medical Speech-Language Pathology book series. Seasoned clinicians provide a practical guide to the terminology, context, and knowledge needed to employ best practices and address the specific needs of patients nearing the end of life. As a profession, speech-language pathology focuses primarily on rehabilitation, with the expectation that patients’ function will improve with intervention. For patients with life-limiting conditions, SLPs play an important role in supporting patients’ communication, cognition, eating, drinking, and swallowing with an emphasis on quality of living. Clinical professionals require tailored resources to develop their knowledge and skills related to appropriate care and treatment in hospice and palliative care contexts, which have been hard to find until now. Nearly all patients experience difficulties with communication and eating as they near the end of life. Patients, family members, and professionals benefit if the patient can communicate their symptoms, indicate the effectiveness of symptom management strategies, participate in setting care goals, and engage in social-emotional and spiritual conversations with family and members of the care team. This book provides SLP professionals guidance in how to offer meaningful assessments and interventions that meet patients’ needs. The book contains case examples together with the latest research and contributing clinicians’ years of experience. Supported by these effective and thoughtful strategies, SLPs can offer both comfort and care for patients in their final days. Key Features: * An overview of and introduction to the key concepts and benefits of hospice and palliative care * Guidance on terminology and standard models of end-of-life care * Adult and pediatric case studies with frequently encountered scenarios * Chapters authored by a renowned team of contributors * Discussion of legal and ethical considerations * Practical techniques and strategies for assessment and intervention
