A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled PERCEIVED SELF, PARENTAL AND SITUATIONAL FACTORS IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PARTICIPATORY BEHAVIOR OF HONG KONG CHILDREN AND YOUTH: A TEST OF AJZEN''S THEORY OF PLANNED BEHAVIOR submitted by Chow Chi Kin for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August, 2002 The focus of the present study was to examine psychological and social factors that relate to children''s physical activity (PA) participatory behavior. The interrelationship among these factors was examined in the framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The aim of this study was to test the viability of the TPB in the prediction of children''s intention for PA and their actual PA participatory behavior by assessing perceived self, parental and situational factors. Participants involved in the present study were 1,920 children and youth between 8 and 15 years of age, who were selected randomly from schools of low, medium and high academic ability in various districts across Hong Kong territories. The parents of 1,084 of these respondents completed a parental questionnaire. Brustad''s instrument, the Children Attraction to Physical Activity (CAPA) scale, was adapted and reworded for the measures of constructs in children and parents samples. Factor analyses were conducted on the children and parents'' items before they were conceptualized as respective constructs for testing in TPB model. Tests of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were conducted for assessing the main effects and/or interactions of various groups on TPB constructs. The subsequent structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses for assessing the fit of the TPB model across groups. Results of the SEM analyses indicated that the original and the revised TPB models fit across various groups'' data. Attitude (ATT) and self-perceived physical competence (COMP) were the major determinants of youngsters'' intention (INT) for physical activity. COMP was found consistently to have a direct effect on youngsters'' actual PA behavior (BEH), while ATT was found to be a significant predictor of youngsters'' BEH only in the children of 10-11 years of age. Adolescents (12-15 years) depend more on their ATT than their COMP towards INT. The effect of youngsters'' ATT on their INT was found to increase from ages 8 to 15, while the opposite trend was noted in the effect of COMP on INT across the same age period. Such COMP on INT effect was relatively weaker in the girls than in the boys across respective age-by-gender groups. Subjective norm (SN) had a significant direct effect on girls'' (12-15 years) actual PA behavior. SN had a negative effect on INT for the youngsters whose parents have relatively low attitude towards PA. In contrast, SN had a positive effect on BEH for the youngsters whose parents have relatively high attitude towards PA. The perceived opportunities for engaging in physical activity (i.e., perceived external control) had stronger effects on girls'' INT for physical activity than their COMP to perform physical activity. While boys relied much more on their COMP than their perceived external resources when considering whether to perform physical activity (i.e., INT). In recent years, there has been an increase in interest in mental health disorders as a result of mediatic coverage of Olympic athletes’ mental health struggles, and also due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. These phenomena helped to further exacerbate a problem already extensively present in sport and society. Therefore, applying a psychophysiological approach to physical activity, exercise, and sports research has become very popular. Indeed, mental fatigue and mental disorders are not only psychological in origin, but also require an explanation from a psychophysiological perspective due to the effective interconnection between the psychological and physiological dimensions. Psychological variables can also influence performance and the psychophysiological system has a strong effect on the control of physical capacities. Moreover, pacing behaviour, decision-making, self-regulation, and effort perception can also explain the role of the brain in physical activity and exercise management. Thus, the aim of this Research Topic is to share the impact of a psychophysiological approach in physical activity, exercise, and sports. The goal of this Topic is to address the following: • Factors determining performance, including technical/tactical, physiological, cognitive, and psychosocial; • training and competition demand; • training interventions and testing in sports; • acute and chronic effects of training in psychophysiological variables; • coaching in sports; • strength and conditioning, mental health, and performance; • recent developments within sports sciences research. This Research Topic endeavors to explore at specific themes related to physiological stress and mental well-being. Additionally, we aim to provide evidence to coaches and sports scientists highlighting the relationship between training and competition demands, related to performance. We also want to analyze the effects of strength and conditioning training, and coaching effects (acute and chronic) on psychological and physiological. Finally, it is our intention to provide scientific literature with evidence for a relationship between movement, behavior and cognition with physiological performance: the psychophysiological approach.
